Description:
A bluesy folk-rock song inspired by a personal story. But it also finds inspiration from several members here who have sought after "that something" (or still are) without ever attaining that elusive "prize." Some of lyrics are loosely based on parts of Ecclesiastes. The song features some excellent guitar riffs and fill by Craig. I provide the guitar instrumental solo with my excursion into the world of the Wah.
Craig: lede guitar fills, ambient backup vocals
Jack: vocal, backup vocals, acoustic guitar, wah guitar, bass, organ.
Studio drummer: The Loopster
Lyrics:
So tell me now what does a man gain
From all the works of his hands?
Is it so many castles in the sky?
A generation goes and
A generation comes
Is there anything new under heaven's eye?
Refrain:
But a fresh breeze is blowing from the east.
Seems like the weather's gonna change.
A voice calls out, "Harden not your heart!"
Something new is going on
Something's gonna change
As I find myself drawn into the light.
As I find myself drawn into the light.
When I consider all the things I have sought
All the sweat and the toil
Nothing gained for treasure spent.
Make a mark, become a name
Chasing down the wind
Was this vanity heaven sent?
[Refrain]
What advantage does the wiseman have
Over the fool?
What will be with the setting of the sun?
Maybe life's just some cruel joke
Just a twist of Fate?
On the edge the questions come.
[Refrain]

Real nice collab gents. Great adaptation of Qoheleth's (Solomon---for my
money) philosophical musings. Love the walking bass line and bluesy
guitar riffing. Wah solo is a gas! Great stuff.

It's great sending a song to Craig. I had pretty much finished with what I was going to do on this... knowing it needed more. He sent it back with those cool guitar riff fills. I though... "yes!"
Glad you like the wah... that was fun. Thanks for stopping by and listening.

about what has "staying power" dadai. That's why I think God's word,
when people acomplish great things in scripture can have long lasting
effects for generations to come. But who knows what has Gods
approvel as for as scripture in the future or whether people will even
consider it valuable or of self worth.
I think a wiseman if he is very wise might be a bit happier in peace of
mind if he was lucky enough to have wise parents that gave him or her
wisdom to protect themselves from the hurt of this worl. But as parents
you can only do so much then it's up to them to help for themselves a
bit.
Gad, sometimes i get to philosophical Dadai, sorry:)
Nice job you guys, enjoyed it, made me think:)

Bill... you can get philosophical any time you want as far as I am concerned.
You touch on a number of issues and truths. I can imagine an enjoyable
evening, sometime, the two of us talking about life, God, and family... and
playing a little guitar along the way.
Thanks for listening and your comments.

Slap my face. Wake me or I shall go mad. &mdash 06/06/06 - 04:56:37 PM
I like the chords used on the line "As I find myself drawn into the light".
Lots of energy here, boys. Nice tight production. Jack is slapping up
about the face with his philosophical stance. Nice soloing, Craigster.
"On the edge the questions come." Which one of you is on the edge?
Gimme the directions. I wanna go there for a dose of enlightenment.
Hey, if you're sad about being unsigned, here's a sign: a bird will shit
on your head. In Italy, that is a good omen. Saw that in the movie
"Under the Tuscan Sun" last night.
Other than that, I know nothing.
Except this...
Fishergod
Few hours of repose
and a barge load of woes,
God's trawling the oceans
for wayward emotions.
All kinds of perceptions.
Distinct dispositions.
Unique dreams and sighs.
Diverse wails and cries.
This deity's angling.
His love's disentangling
the human condition,
dark mare of perdition.
His oars keep on churning
through wavelets of yearning.
Hope wrapped 'round despair,
Does God really care? [ Reply to This ]
Slap my face. Wake me or I shall go mad. &mdash 06/07/06 - 05:33:23 PM
Rich, my friend... we are all on the edge ; ) And I am slapping myself first
and
foremost. And, yes, I really like that chord also... C minor. My favorite
moment in the song.
Thanks for your thoughts.... now about that sonnet???! That's right, the ball
is in my court!

Let me cut and paste... &mdash 06/06/06 - 05:47:46 PM
This song really reminds me of Time Out Of Mind era Dylan with Daniel
Lanois production...rough but right...
A lot less reverb than Lanois, though...
The more I listen to this, the more I enjoy the wah breaks. And I think
snow has outdone himself in the tasteful fills department. I think
you've chosen a very appropriate drum loop. Doesn't sound loopy or
loopish at all. It partaketh little of looposity, is what I'm getting at. It is
deficient in loopitude. Sounds like a loose and lazy--but
timekeeping--drummer.
Craig also does a good job with the second vocal, which is good, 'cause
I really like your lead vocal. I could imagine the lead vocal being just a
touch more prominent, maybe compressed or otherwise effected to put
it forward in the mix a bit.
The song itself sounds simple and doesn't get ponderous and
pretentious, as can sometimes happen when a song gets a little King-
James-by-way-of-Melville sort of biblical.
I think you've got a winner here, Jack. All around.

Reminds of Dylan? Too kind.
The wah guitar was my first... thoroughly enjoyable for a learner like me...
And Craig... his guitar is... what shall I say... just right, just so good!
My drummer thanks you very much for your loopy analysis of his
performance!
I am not sure which vocals you are referring to re: Craig... he adds those
ambient, echoing backups... I add the backup harmonies. Actually, I pulled
back my lead vox a bit before uploading... I am flattered you would like this
old raspy voice more up front. All in all, we didn't do too bad, did we?
(always shadowed by self-doubt)
King James.... Melville... biblical?... so much to comment on and so little
time.... you da man!

Well, maybe it's YOUR background vocals I'm enjoying...or a combination of you
and snow...now I have to listen again...
The whole King James to Melville thing is just referring to the feel or tone of the
lyric...also a thing that Dylan sometimes does...

Wonderful &mdash 06/06/06 - 10:08:10 PM
I am sitting here listening and the song has a unique mixture of styles.
Lots of comparisons run through my mind. Everything from Greatful
Dead and Country Joe to JJ Cale and the Amazing Rhythm Aces. I love
the refrain, "I find myself drawn into the light". Whatever those chords
are work very nicely with the words. Very memorable. Nice job! [ Reply to This ]

I had no idea... subliminal accumulation of song styles over many years of listening to music? Bronco, it's always good to have you give me a nod on a song. I appreciate it.

Welcome to the Chateau California &mdash 06/07/06 - 11:22:21 AM
This one put the hook in me right from the git-go, even tho it was
3hours long at the time :)
Love the references to SoCal sounds, guys, The Dead et al. Something
about workin' with D brings that out in me. Funny, in high school, I was
heavily into all those SoCal bands %u2014 Dead, Quicksilver, Doors, Jefferson
Airplane, It's a Beautiful Day, CSNY family. But most of my musical
buddies were of the "if-it-ain't-British-it's-crap" school of thought.
Course, we all came together at The Stones :) [ Reply to This ]

I am sitting here listening to this song again and thinking how much you nailed the guitar riffs. I wanted to do that : ) but I didn't... you did. Thanks mate for joining in once again.
I remember my college days and the music I listened to and listened to... and ... well, you get the picture. Snow, you just named a fair number of the groups on my stereo.
But remember... you can never go wrong with the "if-it-ain't-British-it's-crap" formula.

The more I listen, the more I like this. It's so true; chasing after "things"
and position turns out to be meaningless. I love the wah wah and the
bluesy feel to this song. Very nice vocals and guitar. :-) [ Reply to This ]

This is pretty darn good!
Got my toes tappin' and my head bobbin'.
I really don't have anything to criticize here (The mic hiss with the vocal
track was noticable but not distracting, so I really didn't mind) so I'll just
stop writing.
Great!

Folk and blues and swingin' it. Gets your foot tapping, fingers snapping.... One could even work a two-step in there on the floor. I like the wah along with snow's articulation - really great combination! The bass bumps the line. The vocals are great - reminds me... I'll send you an email.
Thanks for this.

Hey Jack thanx.... mabey it's the Kurt Vonegut in me... but eccleiastes
has always been one of my fav books in the Bible... you know how we
christians are"what's your favorite verse"... and I say "better the
miscarrage than he"... sometimes it gets a laugh, and sometimes they
don't get it...
great job on this...this works real well... you have framed this well
the whole thing very well, and it comes across strong... good
communicating here in song.... certainly reminds me that all this stuff
is just stuff, and as that sinks in .. where do we turn... and you got it...
