Description:
Hey Friends

I pretty much stopped writing, I'm 50 and it really didn't matter if I wrote or not, I was OK with that... I still enjoyed recording, and everything I’ve posted so far was written in the last 10 years... somehow listening to you all in your creative process made it important to me again... This song probably wouldn't even exist if it weren't for MJ and jonx... his lyrical sensibility is incredible... anyway, you've helped me along...

for any one who has a friend or loved one that makes you hope for the best, and fear the worst... this song is for a friend that I have had a long dialog with(years)... he's very self destructive, I was stuck on the 2nd verse, because I didn't want to beat him over the head, I wanted it to have a redemptive atmosphere... you don’t care about winning the argument, you care about winning the friend

my high school son, Dane played the fretless (proud Dad)

one more thing; The year of Jubilee came every 50 years in ancient Israel, on every 50th year every debt was canceled and everyone started with a clean slate... that explains one of the lyrics

Lyrics:
I WOULD NEVER HAVE THE NERVE TO ASK YOU
“COULD YOU CHANGE JUST TO BE MORE LIKE ME”?
YOU WOULD FACE MY FAILURE
HOW COULD THAT EVER SET YOU FREE

BUT I WOULD NOT HESITATE ONE MOMENT
TO TURN YOUR HEAD AND CHANGE YOUR POINT OF VIEW
ALL I REALLY WANT IS
TO SEE YOU BE MORE LIKE YOU

IF I COULD SEE YOU RISE
IF I COULD SEE YOU STAND
IF I COULD SEE YOU KNOCKING AT THE DOOR

IT’S CHOICES THAT HAVE PAVED YOUR TROUBLED PATHWAY
LED YOU LIKE THE BLIND AND LEFT YOU LAME
YOU GIVE YOURSELF A FREE PASS
AS YOU SO QUICKLY SPREAD THE BLAME
IT CAN NOT BE TOO LATE TO WIN THE HIGH GROUND
YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO GIVE, SO MUCH TO GAIN
WILL YOU STAND AND FIGHT NOW
WILL YOU TURN AND FACE YOUR PAIN

I CAN SEE YOU RISE UP
I CAN SEE YOU STANDING
I CAN SEE YOU KNOCKING AT THE DOOR
I CAN SEE YOU SMILING
I CAN SEE YOU LAUGHING
AND I CAN SEE YOU’RE MEANT FOR SO MUCH MORE
SO MUCH MORE

YOU BRAKE BUT YOU WILL NOT BEND
WHY MUST THIS BE
COME BACK AND LIVE AGAIN
YOUR YEAR OF JUBILEE

STILL I WOULD NOT HESITATE ONE MOMENT
TO TURN YOUR HEAD AND CHANGE YOUR POINT OF VIEW
ALL I REALLY WANT IS
TO SEE YOU BE MORE LIKE YOU
MORE LIKE YOU
SO MUCH MORE

Love the fretless! &mdash 06/07/06 - 05:34:24 PM
Lovely guitar intro Scott, and Dane, that's some seriously nice fretless
playing there. Scott, somehow you've dropped below my radar after
my first couple of listens to your earlier songs - this is really very
nicely done. Very pretty song with heart felt lyrics. Your guitar
recording is excellent - wish I could achieve that round but clear
sound. Love the vox. Have I missed anything? Nope - it's all good.
special kudos to Dane - must get a fretless some day.
Class!

thanx Neil... I love playing bass, but I gladly handed the bottom end duties
over when he showed me his idea for the intro...

Lush &mdash 06/07/06 - 07:49:58 PM
What a lush and beautiful acoustic guitar bed you've created for this
insightful song, Scott. And Dane has added some very tasteful bottom
on the fretless to nicely complement it all.

Part folky, part bluesy and part jazzy in a terrific blend. Great job on
the lead vocal and harmonies, as well. All in all, a great piece of
songwriting, my friend. ;-)

My only suggestion to improve this already terrific piece is based on
my own anticipation while listening to the song... I kept waiting for the
BIG harmony part --- which didn't come until *You break but you will
not bend..."

I think it comes a little late in the song. What I could hear happening
was a solo follow singing *I CAN SEE YOU* throughout the series of
lyrics preceding that part. I think it would complement that poignant
part and provide a nice entry for the following BIG harmony part.

thanx J... I'm not sure I quite get your structure...would it require an edit... i
know you like to produce over stuff so if you want, I'll get you the tempo and
stuff and you can have at it, but either way, thank you

Beautiful and heartfelt &mdash 06/07/06 - 08:37:44 PM
Excellent songwriting, guitars and vox. I'm on my third listen and my
ears want more. Fine production, too.

I think we all know people who could be free, if only they'd let go of
the pain and the failures and walk in forgiveness. You express the
feelings of wanting to see them set free very well.

Welcome back... &mdash 06/07/06 - 11:13:13 PM
to the wonderful (and excruciating) world of songwriting. Insightful lyrics.
Much truth therein. I've been on both sides of the debate you recount.
Your guitar work is near virtuoso. Vox and harmonies beautiful and
professional sounding. Production is top notch. I hope a lot of folks give
this one a serious listen. It deserves high votes and a lot of fans.

God bless!

thanx... i tried something new recording the guitars... One mike directly at
the guitar and the other 90 degrees out into the room... copy and paste the
room mike track and pan hard L & R, then reverse the phase on one channel...
I'll use that one again

I now cry. What prose to him.

I don't know where to start, with Tim:

IT%u2019S CHOICES THAT HAVE PAVED YOUR TROUBLED PATHWAY
LED YOU LIKE THE BLIND AND LEFT YOU LAME
YOU GIVE YOURSELF A FREE PASS
AS YOU SO QUICKLY SPREAD THE BLAME
IT CAN NOT BE TOO LATE TO WIN THE HIGH GROUND
YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO GIVE, SO MUCH TO GAIN
WILL YOU STAND AND FIGHT NOW
WILL YOU TURN AND FACE YOUR PAIN

Today we learned Monica's Dad was lost on the operating table last night, for 20 min they worked and he's breathing on a machine but unconcious.

I cry.

Thomas O Lake:

I CAN SEE YOU RISE UP
I CAN SEE YOU STANDING
I CAN SEE YOU KNOCKING AT THE DOOR
I CAN SEE YOU SMILING
I CAN SEE YOU LAUGHING
AND I CAN SEE YOU%u2019RE MEANT FOR SO MUCH MORE

Thanks for this song, but it hurts a lot right now. Pray for them...

Scott, your compositions are truly wonderful. I, for one, am very glad you

so you're never too old.

God bless,

Well, &mdash 06/08/06 - 06:17:20 PM
I've heard this a few times today, and every time I tried to leave a
comment I got interrupted by Life (aka kids, who seem to think they
should take precedence). So I'll make this quick.

Another beautiful tune, beautiful singing, playing, and lyrics.

Glad to see you're writing again. Keep 'em coming!

Well, &mdash 06/18/06 - 06:21:53 AM
the fact that the kids are a higher priority is just one more thing to like about
you... I posted this song and left the following day to camp with my kids
where no one can find me.... no cell phone or tv or internet, with several hot
bluegrass players around the camp at night... but I didn't have the
opportunity to see how the song did... I'm glad you caught this one

Nice sentiment &mdash 06/12/06 - 02:41:32 PM
As I was growing up I was a bit self destructive. I then learned the hard way and eventually found myself. Through those years I wasted so much time and should have made better of it. Now I watch my love ones do the same... Most of the time they fall on their faces and have to get back up. Some fall harder than others some don't ever get back up. Some dig a hole and then they have to decide to climb out of it. I extend my hand but only they can grip it. I can hold their hand knowing that someday I'll have to release it.

Nice song and thanks for sharing...

Texasfeel said it all beautifully. You can bend over backwards trying to
help someone, but if they don't want it, it ain't gonna do no good. Your
song shows the love you feel for your fellow man, and it is sung and
played beautifully.

Heavy velvet &mdash 06/13/06 - 01:22:29 PM
Heavy message, yet such a smooth groove! The blend of vocals, guitar-driven instrumentation, message and airy stereo feel certainly evokes Jars of Clay at their best (with my favorite parts of The Eagles and Dan Fogelberg mixed in). Excellent chord choices and changes, beautiful harmonies, skillful playing on every instrument. If I was a voting man, I would wonder why the scale doesn't go to "11".

Nice Work &mdash 06/13/06 - 04:02:56 PM
Scott - Just wanted to add my two cents and second the comments about clear and professional playing and production values. The only comment which might be helpful is that, like some other commentators, I wanted greater contrast between the verse and refrain. Was hoping to hear a fuller vocal and instrumental refrain and some solo work that pushed the emotion you clearly can muster in your lyrics.

Thanks for the tune.

No joke! Goosebumps. The reality of MacJams, is that there are a lot of
talented musicians on this site. It's FINDING them that's the hard part! Not
to be mean to others, but you are just in a different class altogether. I
don't know you, Scott, but I have to assume you're a professional
musician. If not, well then I'd be confused.

This is a gorgeous song, and it's just perfect. Everything from the guitar,
to the perfect levels of the exceptional harmonies. Just... a perfect 10.
Thanks so much for showing the rest of us how it's done.

The mood of this tune shows me a peaceful moment playing the song together with your son, and it's also reflecting the great lyrics. You make a wonderful soundbed with your guitar and the perfect harmonies. You have a great voice for this kind of tunes. And it is a beautiful song.

I can understand how proud you must be having your son play along on the fretless bass. He shows a great talent for it. Hopefully we will get to enjoy more of you two here:) One of my sons is also playing, and hopefully I will get him with me on some tunes.

I'm very impressed over the high quality of your performance and production Scott.

That friend that you speak of could be our alter ego &mdash 07/04/06 - 11:43:47 PM
It is not required that one is self-destructive or that one is at the bottom of a fallen path before needing hope or a hint of what is the right thing to do... This song, could play an important role during any personal crisis, big or small, where a decision needs to be made and it needs to be the right one, and for all of those that it involves... That's what makes this piece universally beautiful... We all have these moments and some SEEMINLY, more than others...

You've heard all my ramblings about how astounded I am by your technial abilities, so I will spare everyone here, because what I'm captures my attention here, is radiates from your center....

Yes, this is a wonderfully crafted piece of work and you've heard all my ramblings about how astounded I am by your technialabilities, but what has captured my attention here is what radiates from within -
When I listen to this, what I hear most is that you and your son are overtly loving and kind souls - There's plenty of the tecnical stuff available, - 'What is truly special' about this piece is what came from your core - Thanks for sharing it at MJS - Dion
