Grandpa would have liked this too... &mdash 06/18/06 - 08:08:29 AM
This is nice Caleb, your graphic makes me think of the pond by his house.... Nice work here. You know he liked listening to movie soundtracks?

Bonus points for the penny whistle &mdash 06/18/06 - 11:54:57 AM
That was definitely a creative choice among all the orchestral violence.

Niggle: your orchestra seems to consists only of violins and trombones.
Throw in more instruments. This needs to be a wall of sound. Good
percussion parts though.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did hold back a little on this one. I'm looking into buying a better orchestal sounds pack for reason soon.

very well done &mdash 06/18/06 - 12:05:34 PM
I really enjoyed the strings. And the drums were cool too. A cool piece.
By the way...to get the orchestra and drum sounds, did you use reason?

Thank you. Yes, I used 100% reason for my virtual instruments. The NN-XT is my sampler of choice. The stock orchestral percussion is sort of lame, so I used a snare sample from one of my 'Reality Drums' upgrade for all of the snare parts.

Thanks for stopping by!

Loved the persistent piano. The melody sounded a somewhat Asian. Was
that you intention? There was slight discord in it, which gave it added
interest but took away somewhat from the theme%u2019s beauty. A very strong
piece. You've done you're grandfather proud.

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, the slightly Asian chord progressions were intentional. They seemed to evoke a mysterious discord (which was appropriate in this situation) so I decided to keep the string's melody. The snare section gave it a military-like mark, which I felt balanced it out.

Thanks again,

Beauty, power, sorrow &mdash 02/06/07 - 02:03:01 PM
The memories of my grandparents hold special appeal to me, and I see through the eyes of your music that yours do for you as well. There is great power and beauty in this music... the 3/4 time gives it a kind of lilting grace, and the pentatonic scale adds a little exotic mystery. To have the military cadence come in at the middle, then have grandfather's theme brought back as a more ethereal pennywhistle was a nice touch... very evocative. Definitely would benefit from better orchestral sounds, and beefing up the orchestration more in the middle. Nice photo of the black swan too.
