Description:
I think this song is very timely and meaningful in the context of current events in our world. It's a musical piece, but yes, it's also a political statement.

I imagine this song from the point of view of a soldier in the battlefield...

This is an edit of "Love and War." I re-recorded the guitars (which were off-key previously) and added orchestral background instruments and additional percussions to give it a more lush arrangement. Still imperfect, but better I think. :)

Lyrics:
TEARS AND THUNDER IN THE BATTLEFIELD
(music, lyrics and instruments by Leon)

1
I can hear the drums
rhythm in the wind
beating through the night
then fade away...
Listen to that sound
What's that rising in the air
singing of pain and fear in our hearts

2
We can smell the burning fire
We can feel the shaking ground
The price of glory and love
won by the loss of many lives

Refrain:
And I can feel the love around me
Gaze into the sky
teardrops falling from our eyes
Birds crashing down
yeah yeah yeah

So can you feel the love around yeah yeah
Can you feel the love around
Can you see the sunrise of tomorrow
Can you breathe the air of life

3
Can you hear the bombs
exploding in the night
halfway 'round the world
away from home
Gunshots through the dark
breaks silence of indifference
sending a knife into our hearts

4
We can taste the blood and tears
of tens of thousand dying souls
Should peace be won at such a price
We wonder there must be a better way

Refrain:
And I can feel the love around me yeah
look into our hearts
teardrops falling from our eyes
birds crashing down
yeah yeah yeah

So can you feel the love around you
(yeah, yeah)
Can you feel the love around
Can you see the bright colors of the future
and breathe the warm air of life

So can you feel the love around
Can you feel the love around
Can you see the sunrise of tomorrow
Can you breathe the air of life

I seem to recall having heard this song before, I gotta say its a great song. It is very dramatic and catches the listener! I like the leadguitar that sometimes kick in. YOur voice sounds very good on this, a little different then what i am used to, or maybe not! The strings work great, you have done a great job hiding then a little in the mix, which i consider a good thing! Less is more! Thanks you for the free music!

Hey, Selts (the rockstar, not the beer:-), thanks for commenting, man! Yeah,
you still recognize the song! I just added some strings, but as you said I did not
want it to overpower the guitar and the song altogether. I just wanted to add a
little drama and a little polish. But you know, as soon as I posted this song, i
realized there were a few more things i wanted to correct. Anyway, I just let it
be... i know it will never be perfect to my ears.

Thanks for your very nice and honest comments. I just checked your most
recent song and I kinda learn from your techniques, too. Have a great summer,
Magnus, and hope to catch you in the chat sometime!

I especially like .... &mdash 06/18/06 - 06:49:42 PM
the fact that your vocals are more up front in this mix as opposed to some of your other numbers where they have seemed to be buried beneath so many layers and effects ... I like the harmony tracks here .. they are nice and subtle and do not overpower the main vocal part ! Good job Leon ! I think that "woah woah woah" is now the Leon signature sound !

Hey, Alannah! Thanks for listening! I tried to do do just a two-voice
harmony this time to make it plain and simple. The music itself is already
multi-layered so I didn't wanna throw in all that vocal complexity. I wanted
my real voice to be heard, and it ain't bad :-). Besides my Mac couldn't take
more than 12 layers... LOL.

As for the woaah-woaah, I was born crying and singing like that, so couldn't
help putting a few seconds of it in there! It's my vocal habit, I guess... Hehe!
I think I will name myself as the Artist Currently Known As Woaah-woaah, or
ACKAWW! The style is patented and anyone who sings with a woaah will have
to give me some royalty, LOL.

Thanks again for your tireless commenting. I treasure your remarks.

PS: When is your next song coming out? Looking forward to it.

Hi there again, the great McBoy! Thanks so much for your appreciation of my
voice. I sure can say it's an honor to be considered vocally at par with those
awesome contestants! I love to compose and play my own music though. The
appreciation I get from you guys beats any applause I can gain from singing in a
contest or karaoke club!

Wonderful &mdash 06/19/06 - 11:09:29 AM
Firstly, a complaint ... I can't vote on this for some reason, which is really annoying, 'cause this deserves a BIG vote.
I really liked the original, and sometimes when you remix a track, it gets worse, not better. Not the case here Leon. I really love the new percussion, and the guitars sound much better. Generally, this has got a much better groove to it.There's a really nice mandolin sound in there as well, that sounds lovely. Great production as well - everythings lovely and crisp.

Your voice sounds really powerful, and as ever, you sing it like you mean it - the emotion really jumps out of the speakers. I kind of agree with Mcboy about American Idol - you've got the kind of voice that would blow the competition away. But then, I love the stuff that you write, and they always sing covers ... still, it would be a break.

Great harmonies on this. The only issue is that the song feels like it ends a little to early, but I'd take that as a good sign, 'cause it leaves you wanting more - maybe an instrumental break before it goes back into the refrain?

And When are you gonna release a CD?!

Hi, Steve! Always great to hear a comment from one of my most admired
musicians here at Macjams. I did disable the ratings for this song, so it wasn't a
glitch. I just wanted to enjoy the song without the pressure of having to please
the scoring audience, and I am so glad that you actually liked it. For me, a
remark of appreciation and pointers from you and the other great musicians
here are worth more than any score :-)

As for American Idol, Simon Cowell and I are so similar in terms of attitude, so
we might end up in a brawl and cancel the show for good. I'll spare his life and
his career. LOL. :-)

here - I am moved - Dion

Your production seems to improve with each offering. Great vocal but that
is par on your course. Have you ever listened to any hawian music? Like
Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole. Your music has a sweetness much like that.
Great work. Regards

Hi Matthew! Thanks for the inspiring review of my song. Didn't really think of
Hawaiian songs until you mentioned it. I think Hawaiian songs have the
sweetness and poignant melody and strings and guitars which is why there is
some similarity. That was a very interesting observation which is indeed true!

Thanks so much again for taking the time to listen!

Tears and Thunder &mdash 06/20/06 - 03:53:12 PM
I like the echo on the guitar. The strings add a more moving element to
this. The arco strings in there later on sound great too. Your voice is great
as usual. I know what you mean by something never being perfect to your
own ears, but it sounds pretty darn perfect from out here. Nice addition
of a few fx too.

Tears and Thunder &mdash 06/20/06 - 07:30:40 PM
Hi, Ben! Interesting indeed that you thought the guitar echoes were a good
effect while I was actually thinking of the echoes as a mistake I wanted to correct
:-) Now that you say you like them, I feel better about them and will keep them
there!

It's awesome to experiment on the orchestral instruments and indeed I am
beginning to discover how great those sounds you put in your world music
makes you feel! They are a joy to listen to. I have been listening to your music
and those of Einarus and MissChaos trying to pick some great pointers on how
to use them creatively without being excessive.

The production is pretty crisp and clean and as usual you sing
wonderfully. You have nice harmonies as well. The strings and echo
guitar effect go together nicely.

Hi, Brandon,

Thanks for stopping by to listen and comment on my song. I'm still a newbie in
terms of using orchestral insturments, but it's been fun trying new stuff. I'm
getting a little more confident everytime. Will be listening to your stuff and hope
to find some collaboration with you again sometime soon.

Always Glad &mdash 07/02/06 - 11:27:37 AM
To hear your passions funneled into your music, Leon. It is most
certainly what makes your songs very special.

This is a very crisp recording and mixed very well. As always, it is your
empassioned vocals that give this tune its real power.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think you were probably born about 30 or 40
years too late. There was a time when your kind of passionate
compositions would have drawn a sizeable following.

Regardless... I appreciate your fine work. Keep it up. ;-)

i believe u actually have to experience something like this before u
write a song about this. have u ever talked to the soldiers from iraq.
they dont feel this way. they were overjoyed to help the iraqis. one
soldier i talked to said he played metalica through the loud speaker on
his humvee and there were iraqis everywhere dancing in the streets
(wasn't allowed for 35 years) so maybe u kno do a little research before
making a song like this thats all i ask.

I happen to have been in contact with a few young men, some of them family
and friends, coming back from war who have suffered post-traumatic stress
disorder. My day-to-day tasks involve interviewing and doing evaluations
and treatment of patients. Believe me, there are quite few soldiers out there
who, for ethical reasons, would never have wanted to go to war.

Before you forget, this is a song about someone's viewpoint about the war. I
am not exactly presenting a scientific survey on 60 Minutes. I need no
research to sort out my thoughts and feelings about what's going on in this
world. In case you missed the point of this song, the title begs the question
"Can you feel the love around?" It does not denounce the intentions of war,
which is peace and justice. It's the irony and dilemma of war that provokes
more profound thinking. It asks the question, but there is no clear or correct
answer.

By no means do I intend to speak for all the freedom-fighters of our land, but
your happy and noble outlook about war is not the majority's opinion either.
