Description:
A ship sets sail, sailors are warned of the impending danger, warnings are ignored, Sirens lure the sailors to their deaths in the shallow reefs. All software instruments featuring the famous "Mellotron Female Choir" and now, "Mellotron Strings"! Arpeggios up the wazoo! This is a remixed version of the second song I ever posted here at MacJams. After two months, I took into consideration what members had previously said in the comments of the original version. I raised the overall volume, added a little reverb on a few instruments, changed a couple of sounds, and added some more strings. There are more than ten layered tracks at various points in this song. Thanks for all the constructive comments back then, but I could not cut any of it out! No loops. It is all me, one note at a time. PLEASE USE HEADPHONES! Original artwork created in Bryce.
Hardware:
17" PB 1Ghz/1 Mb RAM (boy did this song "tax" the system, too!) It wouldn't play in real time in GB!
Software:
Created entirely in GB 1.1 (finessing in the track editor BIG TIME!)

Thanks, Paul. At the last minute I substituted the string sounds. These
Vintage Mellotron Strings have such a warmth to them.

Alimar, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe &mdash 06/23/04 - 10:04:07 AM
You might not know it from the songs I've posted, but Yes
is one of my favorite bands of all time. This is definitely
evocative of some of their great compositions. Nice job
with the drums, especially. [ Reply to This ]

Much better &mdash 06/23/04 - 10:13:33 AM
All the sounds are improved. I really like the chords and
the solos too. This sounds really musical. Where did you
get all those progressions from? Either the piano lessons
are paying off or you hired Tony Banks for this one...
REALLY cool piece of music.
One slight niggle is that the dynamics are almost TOO
dynamic now. Some of the parts with the fast changing
chords almost take your head off. Probably means I need
more sleep....
But that doesn't take the gloss off another fantastic remix
of a really great track.

Ringo, thanks for staying up until sunrise listening to this again and again!

Crafting &mdash 06/23/04 - 10:13:33 AM
I love when songs include such a great deal of craft,
thought, work, rework, thought, and talent. You have
taken a unique yet fairly simple idea and creating a
wonderful them and variation around it, almost using
anthem chords, yet, always surprising us. The production
you've added to this is transforming. The drums sound
convincingly real, nothing is stilted or sounds mouse-
driven. The crescendoing mellotron chords toward the
end are really great. Excellent. [ Reply to This ]

Tobin, you were very instrumental in the decisions made on remixing this
composition. I thank you dearly for all your input since I have been posting at
MacJams. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

This track is outstanding .. the strings add a depth and
overall the sound is rich and full.
A well produced track that has benefited from the new
edit tremendously.

This is FABULOUS!!! &mdash 06/23/04 - 11:07:45 AM
Your hard work. persistence and helpful feedback from
others has resulted in this EXCELLENT EXCELLENT song,
Alimar!
The chords, the layers, the quality of sounds, the way you
mixed them....are all top-notch. You have so many great
ideas in this one tune, yet manage to unify them together
into a very pleasing whole.
As far as I'm concerned, this is your BEST effort yet!

Oooh Yea &mdash 06/23/04 - 12:59:32 PM
Well done Alimar-isimo.
Very stylistic. Well constructed. It does sound human. It's
just amazing to me that you don't play an instrument.
My only constructive comment is that on an emotional
level, there are so many ups and downs in this short
piece. I suppose though, such is life on a sinking ship.

I guess they reflect the state of my everyday life!

sewing machine-y &mdash 06/23/04 - 05:07:49 PM
Yeah, it's better, but I find the strings too loud and still,
just not quite there. Maybe there are just too many
different string / 'tron sounds . . . I dislike that gap in the
first string section.
Personally, not one of my favorite tracks of yours. It's a
bit too "sewing machine-y" for me. Let me know if that
needs more explanation.
It's really amazing how much better you get at tweaking
the sound over time, isn't it?
It's great, but 10s accross the board? I don't think so . . . [ Reply to This ]
sewing machine-y &mdash 06/23/04 - 05:25:48 PM
I always look forward to your comments! Thanks for your frankness, too. It's
all a learning experience. You have to rate by your inner calling. I guess
people really DO have different callings. Diversity is the "neighbor" of
invention. If this is indeed the product of a "sewing machine"
(metaphorically), I will reap (and accept) what I "sew", from here and now, 'til
"Kingdom Come". Hey, that's a cool song title... Thanks again! Keep those
cards and letter coming!

True evolution &mdash 06/25/04 - 05:04:54 PM
This sounds a lot like Chess, the musical written by one of
the guys of Abba. The instrumentation and the melodic
exploration of the theme reminds me to those opera-like
attempts to lift up pop music in the 70's and 80's. Overall
I can see a lot of effort and that is always something to
respect, but I see little 'true evolution'. The basic theme
sounds almost like a keyboard-demo and frankly, I don't
like the harmonies. However, I have great respect for
somebody with little or no musical background at all,
coming up with a well crafted piece like this. You learned
a lot since you started out using Garageband and I can
only encourage you to keep going. :) [ Reply to This ]

Amazed &mdash 07/01/04 - 09:19:28 AM
At what you have produced. Are you using a
keyboard of any type? Being someone who lived on
a sailboat for threes years, I can say your music
does reflect how quickly weather changes and as
well as moods on a boat under sail. Again I am
impressed.

Amazed &mdash 07/01/04 - 04:03:49 PM
Thank you kindly for your comments and observations. It was definitely my
intention to capture the varying moods as the song progressed (having only
sailed once or twice). From what you are saying, I have succeeded somewhat.
You have touched my heart.

Great Progessive Rock (a tribute to Tony Banks?) &mdash 08/16/04 - 06:53:49 PM
Nice job. If I put this on my iPod and it played randomly, I
might think I was listening to Tony Banks, like some of the
compositions from Genesis/Wind and Wuthering? Either
way, it's a really nice progressive rock
composition. Nice job... Thanks! [ Reply to This ]
