Gudkarma was kind enough to lend himself to a project I wanted to do. That project was to create a type of industrial soundtrack behind some spoken word. Warning: This puppy's 7 minutes long!

Intangeable coolness &mdash 06/23/04 - 12:37:04 AM
I've really enjoyed the spoken word works of gudkarma, accompanied or not by background textures or music. I've enjoyed this one most of all thus far, both because it is maybe closest to my sensibilities and because pakosmokes has done some really interesting work creating cadence and texture here.

The interplay of musical phrases very apt for the content create a tangible structure for the entire 7 minute spoken performance. That's impressive enough, but some of the choices made to emphasize portions of the poetry are also nothing short of inspired.

Like other similar entries, I have no earthly idea how to rate this piece in the context of this site, despite how fantastically cool I think it is. So while I'll have abstain from voting until I can figure it out, let me say for now it sent shivers up my spine!

the occasional effects applied to the vocals are intriguing
and sometimes spooky!

My bones can relate! &mdash 06/23/04 - 08:39:09 AM
Middle age has never been so eloquently described.

An amazing character study. Brilliant and inspiring.

And from a personal perspective, depressing as all heck.

reflections &mdash 06/23/04 - 09:01:23 AM
"...thank god for glass and reflections..." "...oh, the
horror of glass..." packosmokes, you have done a
wonderful job highlighting the text in all the right places.
excellent. (gutkarma, please bring back your catalogue of
poetry!) Thank you for doing more than preserving this
one, but letting it shine. (thru the LCD of my screen and
the vibrations of air around me.)

Apocalypse Now &mdash 06/23/04 - 10:47:18 AM
or Heart of Darkness (depending on whether you like
books or movies). got an image of Kurtz ranting away to
himself off this one. Brooding, intense, unrelenting, sitting
on that fine line between sanity and insanity.

Genius. Again. From both of you.

Artistically done! &mdash 06/23/04 - 12:02:24 PM
Your collaboration is amazing! What a dynamic duo!

gudkarma is a master at expressing himself musically
through the spoken word, and YOU, Pack, are a master at
creating rhythmic textures which are also melodic in
character.

This is a very interesting concept. You don't miss the
melody because the voice and drums create it admirably
well in this song.

I like the occasional distortion effect in the vocals. It
creates an interesting texture.

I think that one of the biggest challenges that any
"musical artist" faces is to make the percussion/drums
sound good. (I certainly need a lot of work in this area.)

But you do it very well and I hope that you two collaborate
again!!!

Great work.

Sincerely,

Cameron

this is by far no where near a tom waits song.
i'm not even sure what the heck that means.

Poetry in motion &mdash 06/25/04 - 05:10:20 PM
I liked almost all submissions of Gudkarma and this one is
no exception. It's great to hear something that is just
based on talking and rythm only, without any real melodic
track -- and yet you get the feeling it's like a song,
especially towards the ending. The rythm tracks are
underlining the expression of the story very well.

When the voice comes from underneath, it gets under the skin faster. You got in there, man. Nice.

Ok. I love this so much I am gonna go out and find some poetry to add to this category. Any ideas? I write great birthday cards, but I have to find something worthy... Like this. Great poem, gudman.
