Description:
This is a remake of the first song that I ever posted on MacJams. Needless to say, the first version was rather pitiful in the production and performance department, as I had just started playing after a 7 year lay-off. This new version puts the old one to shame in terms of guitar and vocal performance, production, and overall energy level. I have also slowed the tempo somewhat to allow for better diction and clarity in the vocals.
The song itself is a study on the Bob Dylan classic Subterranean Homesick Blues. I wrote the song a few weeks after the Katrina debacle, and have since updated it to provide reference to some of the other catastrophic failures of the Bush administration. I have tried my best to keep the phrasology of the original Dylan song, while completely re-writing the music and vocals. In the interest of full disclosure, I did keep the "Look out kid, don't matter what you did" line as an anchor to build the new song around. I hope you all enjoy.
-Mason

Disclaimer: This is NOT a true Tiny Man Inside song as only the guitar player (Mason Wolak) plays on this song. The full version of TMI is currently working on a few other songs and we hope to release them on this site as soon as possible.
Lyrics:
Cheney’s in the penthouse, pullin’ on the puppet strings
I’m pounding blacktop, wonderin’ what tomorrow brings
A man in the leather chaps, fake smile, cowboy hat
Says he’s “working hard” on that, but I think I smell a rat
Look out kid, there’s something that you did,
The Lord sees all, and you didn’t say Amen
Better jump on the beltway, and slip by the G-men
The man in the bulletproof vest up at 16 Penn
Wants 11 of your sons, but you only got 10
Brownie headed FEMA, canned by Katrina
Response was anemic, botched to the extrema
Police state anyway, wire taps everyday
Patriot Act is here to stay, shadow of the NSA
Look out kid, don't matter what ch' ya did,
Wade through on tiptoes, Louisianna death throes
Better keep away from those knockin’ off political foes
Keep a level head, and respect the dead
You don’t need an anchorman to know which way the bushes blow
Oh, get drunk, get caught, smile a lot and get bought
Cheat and lie, DUI, send our kids off to die
Protect? Disrespect? Shuttin’ down the biotech
Rebuild, resurrect, KBR still gets the check
Look out kid, you’re gonna get hit
By stone-faced schemers in a public appearance
Rove was beamin’ lyrics, but it was still incoherent
Seven men in the break in, comin’ back around again
Runnin’ interference, ‘cuz they got the clearance
Oh, get red, get blue, lying like FoxNews
Hit the booze, take a snooze, close your eye to world views
Demote, misquote, smokescreens and mink coats
Take a stand, get out and vote, and make these clowns take note!
Look out kid, they keep it all hid,
Behind abortion and Wallmart and vague moral values
Rummie, Condasleezy, and a fistful of vandals
Don’t wanna be a fool, you better get schooled
The Press don’t work, can’t handle another scandal
Choruses and moronic quotes provided by Dubya, mostly from the 2004 presedential debates.

this kind of music isn't really my cup of tea.

sure. it sounds good. it's tight. i like that crazy wirring upwards sound.
whatever that means.

excellent. I'm glad someone got the reference to the original song. I actually
have a version of this with the Dylan lyrics that I recorded for myself, if you can
believe it.

echoes of Anthrax, a feeling of Rage Against the Machine, this piece is
extremely well put together. i really enjoyed the Dylan play-off(s). It
takes an aggressive genre and caustic tempo and reels it back home to
those of us raised on classic rock.
while not much for politically motivated music, i can certainly
appreciate the content and the context it's presented in.
I really enjoyed this. well, well done! thank you! [ Reply to This ]

Good song. &mdash 06/23/06 - 10:36:25 AM
The mix is really well and the production sounds good. This definitely
has a good energy too that doesn't get lost. It is hard for me to
understand all the lyrics through the song, it seems they are hard to hear
sometimes, but that may not be super important to this genre style.
Overall a good job with a really awesome drumset. [ Reply to This ]

This has real hard edges, while at the same time the production is very
polished... it's takes alot of order to produce the impression of chaos...
anyway I can see you thrashing around the stage as I listen, very
believable and authentic... and the writing is barbed, sharp dangerous
and very clever, several original lines... Is this really a Dylan tune, or
your writing..I never quite gt that from the bio
all round great work [ Reply to This ]

Scott,
The lyrics are all mine. I have always loved Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues for the stream of conscious vocal style, and I have also loved the spirit of his lyrics. I felt like I could take the "phrasology" of his song and incorporate/integrate it with some music that I wrote. I basically keep the same number of syllables per line, the same structure of 4 verses, the same number of lines per verse, and in some instances the same kind of overall theme - only with completely different words.
I did use one line of Dylan's per verse - in each verse he has a line that goes "Look out Kid, don't matter what you did", and I kept that as the anchor for each verse to build the song around.

I'm glad you enjoyed the song!

That really means a lot to me. This song has been about a year in the making - I've put a huge amount of time and effort into it and I'm glad it shows.

This is one of the best tunes I've heard on MacJams. Great idea reworking Uncle Bob. Killer riffs, nicely understated guitar licks. Reminded me a little of Killing Joke's Total Invasion. Excellent stuff. [ Reply to This ]

You guys have a clean heavy sound that hits you like a punch in the face in the cold outdoors. Sort of a RATM vibe. Incredible guitar tone. The rappers flow seems a bit awkward but I think that was a conscious choice to sort of match the Dylan phrasing. Another amazing production. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Slash! &mdash 11/19/06 - 09:16:15 PM
Yeah, this song is actually me (Mason - the guitar player) on vox, instead of Huy, who does all of our other stuff. Needless to say, I don't have the same vocal prowess as Huy does.
Glad you're enjoying our stuff. We have some more in the works and will get it out as soon as we can!

Yeah!! &mdash 07/21/07 - 02:52:15 AM
normally, the whole rap and metal thing escapes me, with the exception of the anthrax/public enemy classic, bring the noise, but i like the mix here...
again, guitars a little thin, but beefy.. maybe need to up the mids in the guitars, and drop the mid-bass.. then up the bass guitars to fatten up the bottom end... one thing i try to do in my tunes is to utilize two tracks of bass, use a fat, low end direct box tone on one, and a higher, modern rock tone on the other, the result being a korn-ish slap tone, with just the right amount of bottom..i mean, it is just me... i am not at all knocking this song-- it is killer!!!!
i want more!!! [ Reply to This ]
