Description:
Colab with Michael House, and me

I listened to this song on mvh9591’s page, and left this comment

“real good job producing a ready for radio pop rock genre.... what does
it say to you... New Life... go ahead and write it... take it all the way
home... it's got a GENESIS vibe going on... I'll bet someone would
collaborate... this is ready... would you mind if I take a crack”

I just wouldn't shut up... next thing you know, I’ve got a project...

But the truth is the work Michael had done spoke to me right away, and I was going on vacation, so I put it in my ipod and drove 12 hr.... and by the time I got there I had the song fleshed out... when I came home I couldn’t wait to record what i was hearing...

Now Michael asked me to post it, and it’s my 1st colab so I’m not sure what the proper protocol is here... because He is the initial creative mover of the piece, and we stayed in touch and he had lots of input... anyway

I really try to tip my hat to Genesis with the vocal arrangement... I’m hearing Phil Collins as I sing it... you know WWPD

Again, thanx Michael for letting me put a vocal on this, it was an easy project, because you already prepared such pro trax

Lyrics:
NEW LIFE HIDES BEHIND WHAT IS AT FIRST HARD TO BELIEVE
NEW LIFE FLOWS TO THOSE WHO ARE SO READY TO RECEIVE...

DANGLE BY A THREAD AND HOLD ON TIGHT
CLING TO WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW WITH ALL OUR MIGHT
ANCIENT VOICE THAT WHISPERS, WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW
NEW LIFE WAITS FOR THOSE WHO CAN JUST LET GO

NEW LIFE HIDES BEHIND WHAT IS AT FIRST HARD TO BELIEVE
NEW LIFE FLOWS TO THOSE WHO ARE SO READY TO RECEIVE...
NEW LIFE

A KERNAL IN THE DIRT APPEARS TO DIE
BUT THE CORN IS GROWING TALL AND STRONG BY MID JULY
AND FROM THE DEATH OF JUST ONE LITTLE SEED
WE RECEIVE MUCH MORE THAN WE COULD EVER NEED

NEW LIFE
NEW LIFE..... NEW LIFE

“You see I was only wondering... because everyday I put one foot in front of the other.. and move forward a pace at a time... I move forward and I look, and I seem to be in the same place I was before, and... I look behind me.. and.. it looks the same to me... I’m waitin’ for something new... I want to turn a corner.. I want to see whats around he corner.... ya know.... What’s around the corner?”

NEW LIFE HIDES BEHIND WHAT IS AT FIRST HARD TO BELIEVE
NEW LIFE FLOWS TO THOSE WHO ARE SO READY TO RECEIVE...

Nice first collaboration! You have an inspiration to write prose, and a voice deliver it. The song is super, what seems a perfect match up for you all.

I may be adept but you sure "dipped" on this. That's an expression my teen
kids use. Means you won big with this. The soliloquy came on suddenly,
unexpectedly, but flowed well with the fabric. Good job on that aspect.

Contemporary Inspiration &mdash 06/25/06 - 09:29:11 AM
Listen, I've heard lots of inspirational music in my life, and this is right
up there with the best of it. I could easily hear this on the
contemporary christian radio. I like the mixing of the modern sounds
with the more classic elements. I like the confessional talk in the
bridge. It's a little lo-fi for the rest of the hi-fi sound, but I like it.
And in terms of your harmonies, I don't think I've heard stuff like this
since America. Scott, you too have a way with words and I like what
you're trying to say here, and though, you don't mention it, it's all
about faith and the rewards of being faithful. "Hard to believe", "ready
to receive", "what's around the corner", all taken on faith....

You have a real gift and there's a need for inspirational music that isn't
over the top christian!

Great collab, guys. Wonderful production. Easy on the ears and a
good reminder to keep the faith. High marks from me. xxoo, kelli

thanx, Kelli... I knew it, like I said a comment from you is worth 10... thanx. I
really can't listen to much christan music... I like writers like Shawn Colvin,
Sting, Rickie lee Jones... I love it when someone can turn a phrase, or say it
new, and pul emotions from the deep... that's the stuff that works for me... I
appreciate the listen

I still go back to "Blue all Over"

Luxurious anthem &mdash 06/25/06 - 12:48:16 PM
Luxurious vocals and Genesis style synth bed. Wonderful mainstream
anthem feel, swaying lighters from the balcony. In my headphones,
the spoken section comes in too hot, startling me in an intrusive way. I
was also thinking that the spoken section could have an audio-visual
aspect, like traffic noise or office ambience or something to place it
somewhere, but that was only a passing imagining. The fade out
ending made me ambivalent, wondering if new life was all an illusion,
since your spoken character never finds change or the next corner to
turn from, and the lyrics (in classic anthem fashion) never give an
example of new life, just an assertion of it existing all around. I would
have preferred the spoken section or something in the lyric to provide
a specific reference to new life, an example to ground the action.
Nonetheless, an artistically and thoughtfully painted audio-wash of
care and love is communicated in your treatment of this solid pop
anthem.

Luxurious anthem &mdash 06/25/06 - 04:37:54 PM
Hi Tobin... I puzzeled over the lack of resolve, but I couldn't get the song to
take me there... it didn't sound sincere... it left me in the same place as you,
but I didn't mind(I have a melencholy side)... and the song structure was set...
Michael said he would rework it... I should have been more patient, but once I
get momentum I seem to plow through

as fo the "Barry White meets Woody Allen" bridge.. (not that it's funny), I really
like the Idea of giving it an environment now that you bring it up.. I actually
took every effect off so your hearing it right from the mike... it's so soft
spoken I thought it would be very personal that way, just musing outloud

thank you much.. I always listen

Luxurious anthem &mdash 07/19/06 - 10:09:05 PM
Thanks for the detailed comments Mr. Mueller. I feel as if Scott did a wonderful job with the lyrics and vocal layering including the spoken part. I'm not sure I could have done it as well - In fact, I know I couldn't have - so therefore - I am completely satisfied myself. I personally write my music for me and if it sounds good to me then that's okay - Now I'm not a artist trying to make a million bucks but doing what I do and getting better at it is a given. I have a great time making the music and then Scott came along for my first collaboration and I got very excited when he did his thing - To me that's what it's about. And - If the song is right - It will sell itself. I hope Scott and I can do more in the future...?
I've said enough - Thanks again,

Goose flesh, aah, and that`s what music`s made of in this case. Very nice playback, tasteful and well played. The level here at MJ is growing with people like you playing such great songs and I don`t mean it in a competative way. It`s inspiring to see that songs and artists grow and that what you sung is really high-shelf.

Goose bumps...this is high praise... I remember as a child, music having
this effect on me at a very young age... I was intrigued... how could this be? I
was hooked!

I have commented to 2 MJ'ers privately that I can see how MJ is raising the
bar for me... my last post "So Much More" I even credit MJ for the songs
existance... at the same time that I was observing this, Dion started a post
about the same subject...we are all certainly good for each other artisticly

Sparkling &mdash 06/26/06 - 12:14:22 PM
There is a real sparkle to this piece, in the music, the production, the vocals. It shimmers.

I'm curious, Scott. Your vocal delivery on this piece is somewhat different than your other posts. For example, you chose to sing "New life hides behind what is at first hard to believe" not as a single phrase, but to break it up with several breaths. It sounds like the singer is strugggling for breath. Like the narrator is unable to sing the entire phrase in one breath. I don't know if this was intentional. But the end result for me is intriguing. It adds a new dimension to the meaning of the song.

The song not only becomes not only a song of inspiration, but a personal testimonial.

Cheers.

Thanx Charlie

I came to this faith almost 3 decades ago.. I came reluctant and faultering...
I'll never forget that it was hard to swallow, and this kept me away... I
eventually researched several issues, then jumped in (that story is much
longer)... so I certainly drew on my experience for this..

anyway... I wanted the chant to do 2 things... to provide a rythem over the
long flowing choral pads, and also to make the narative sound... not so sure
of himself in the face of "dangeling by a thread and holding on"

Really crisp sound, great singing. Vocals fit very nicely. I'm always unsure of the message in what one would consider "inspirational' music. It certainly makes me think. I try to take the message as the spirit of humanity and making things better or having a positive attitude. Then I feel included.

Man! I haven't heard the original, but this is close to flush w/ what I like about the early Genesis - Genesis was one of my all-time favs to go see in concert back in the late 70's and early 80's; them and Yes - "Lamb lies down on Broadway", "Abacab" Aw man, you just took me back to some great places - I'm sitting here and as I was listening, I was able to easily imagine a spectacular light show as this tune lifted me to a really nice gruuv buzz - I should listen to MHV to hear who's playing what, but all of the playing here is tops - Very interesting collab - You have a great singing voice Scott - It's really nice to listen to - And this is gonna sound corny or whatever, but this played to my ears as if it were the works of a 'tightly knitted' group - That says alot - This is the goal, I guess... - Sorry to sound as if something might be lacking, but I was wanting those Rutherford-esk moments to be extended out and into a long solo jamb session - See, that's what happens when you mention these guys.... - This certainly took me to some nice places - There were some beautiful moments in this - Thanks, guys - Dion

Very nice comment. The music just came to me and it sounded good
so I hit the record button. However, The music is only a part that was
missing something. It was missing Scott, his voice and his lyrics. Scott took
this song from a "ok" instrumental to a finished, well produced A1 studio CD
quality song and I am very greatful and proud to be part of it.

This song is a dedication to my daughter and her unborn baby
(Due-Nov.2006). Scott really took the bull by the horns and worked hours
upon hours as I did to make this a special song. (Thanks again Scott)

Really nice &mdash 06/27/06 - 11:31:14 PM
Great job, you two! This grabbed me and pulled me in. It has such a
devastatingly lush impact. Dreamy and thoughtful. While it does have a
bit of a dated sound with some of those synth choices it works in a
timeless wa; like it's a lost classic that has all the power still to this day. I
think you arranged it beautifully. I suppose that if one were to critique it
in fine detail there would be some little things here and there that could
perhaps be tightened up or adjusted mix-wise, but listening to it as is
more than satisfies me and I don't have the time to get into that kind of
detail anyway right now.

This is great to it's core. Bravo! Downloaded.

And we lean in and Greenland is under its glow" one of my favorite MJ
moments! so I'm real happy to have a visit from you... Yes it does have a
vintage sound... to have tried to make this sound newer just wouldn't have
been authentic I don't think... From my fisrt listen to Michaels song, I heard

NO NAME ON IT &mdash 06/27/06 - 11:42:31 PM
I downloaded it. Now you get a brief lecture (the short version).

You didn't fill out the tags on the mp3 file. So, that means that in
iTunes it comes up as no artist name. That means it gets lost in the
library and no artist name is on it. You also named the file
"MJ21977_new life fin 1". That's not too helpful to the person who
downloads the tune and wants to find it later and know who it's by.

In short, always fill in the tags (most importantly, the artist name) and
name the file something easily identifiable as the song the person
downloaded. It's also a good idea to fill in the info area with and
contact information. When you put it on the web for download you
never know where it might end up.

First track I've listened to from you Scott, and this is a cracker. Fantastic vocal harmonies, and a really big sound. This has a real 80's feel (maybe it's the snare) which i really like.
I really like the fact that this doesn't have an obvious chorus, but all the parts of the song are so strong that it keeps your attention all the way through.
This is a massive song, without being bombastic, and the spoken word part feels really heartfelt.

I can't wait to see what the next 20 years bring us. It's incredible to me that one musician can hook up with another and complete a song with such great quality without ever meeting each other and doing it all over the Internet.
Macjams makes this possible.

This line here:

BUT THE CORN IS GROWING TALL AND STRONG BY MID JULY

bears a resemblance to the old bluegrass number covered by Allison Krauss and Union Station... about the Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn... "by July it was up to his eye".
Coincidence? =)
