The Natives are Restless - the coming of Ikhabod

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Last week I posted a tune here that got favourable reviews -- except that the esteemed critic Ikhabod Pain took violent exception to a synth that I used. Conceding that he had a point, I made this reworked version.

Lovely stuff
very meditative. I'm a big fan of Carlos Nakai and the native american
flute. DL 10's and off to listen to that IK nono synth.

Lovely stuff
Thanks for the high score and the flattering comments.

I've seen Carlos Nakai live, and I learned about the Native American flute in a
workshop from Virgie Ravenclaw. From their explanations I know that the
flute is an instrument with meaning, with function in their rituals, and even
with magical and healing properties.

For that reason I felt some scruples in making this track to begin with. Such
an untraditional treatment, by an outsider to their culture, could be seen as
disrespectful. However, I think that, though unconventional, this piece still
shows the voice of the instrument.

In a way I'm still letting the instrument speak with its own voice. The result
was as much a surprise to me as to the listener.

Victor.

Earth, wind, fire and old spirits
Reminiscent of a CD I picked up at a rummage sale. Brulé: We the
People, A Tribal Gathering of Music. I'm wondering if tribal chanting
would help or hurt this. The music floats across a wide soundscape but
does not come front and center with any particular theme or message.
More like the whisperings of thousands of primal spirits than the
declaration of a single living entity.

C'mon, Simon! Can't you support a "e" with an accent in Brule? My accented
"e" disappeared in above comment!

The dancing of your solo work really impacts over the first 2 mins but if
you're going to riff over a repetition it has to build... this scattered like
geese halfway through. Trust me.. there is something more under that
ululating mountain waiting to emerge. I'll listen to your original version.

A truly wonderful composition. A pleasant droning background over
which the flute floats and improvises. Downloaded.

Very unusual and captivating. I'm sitting here listening to it in the
background as I surf other pages only to find that it seems to be affecting
my heart rate and breathing. I think you've really captured the essence of
their rituals here. Nice work.

So happy you stopped by to post a comment on my efforts (which feel
sadly lacking next to this). I might have missed this otherwise and that
would just not do!

I cant say anything technical that hasnt been said already but I can say I
look forward to zoneing out on this piece while making didges.

Thanks for pointing me here!

So that's Neo-Native Electro-Trance/Funk?

I really think MacJams should have that as a category!

Very nice!
I really don't care that anyone else might not appreciate the synth; I likie
it. I really did the sound you've got on it. The breathing sounds are a nice
effect too. I can hear a bit of a didge thing going on in there. Very cool! I
get mesmerised by the sound of a didge. This has a nice ethnic feel and a
worthy production for sure. Peace!

Very nice!
Thanks for commenting.

The "breathing sounds" are, eh, my breathing....

I guess I was compressing the sound a bit too much, so they came out louder
than intended, but when I listened to it I liked the effect. If you hear multiple
breaths, that's because of all the delays on the sound.

Interesting-
There's lots to listen to, here. I guess that I personally like the NA flute better when it is not quite so effected. This gives a more synthetic feeling all the way around.
Still, you play around with many interesting effects, and in a different mood, I'd probably really enjoy this more.

Well, Vic,
You are an amazingly gifted musician and composer. I have really responded to Native American flute music since I first heard it. You take a great deal of care in producing your pieces and you do the culture an honor by making music that moves the listener in the same way that a traditional treatment would. I loved this. Thank you.
