Description:
Welllllllll... this is a foray into dissonance. Some 5ths, augmented 7ths, a little on the spooky side at times, but I LIKE it!

That's me on the acoustic guitar and keyboards, and that's me warbling out the vocals.

Thanks for listening!
Stacey

Lyrics:
HOLLYWOOD
Stacey K. Black

she beckons come closer baby
her arms outstretched to greet

she says i'll warm your heart
i'll fill your cup 'til it overflows

she whispers come lose yourself in me
her arms reach from sea to sea

she promises riches
she promises fame
she promises bright lights
that spell out your name

your name
your name
your name

she begs you come play with me baby
her fingers press on your carotid artery

have you a dream?
she can make it come true
and i'll swear it to you cause i know her

have you a dream?
it will just cost your soul
leave you angry and cold and you'll owe her

she yells you can't ignore me baby
i'm the one who holds your key

she says i'll warm your heart
i'll fill your cup 'til it overflows

have you a dream?
she can make it come true
and i swear it to you cause i know her

have you a dream
it will just cost your soul
turn you angry and cold and you'll owe her

INST one verse

she promised me riches
she promised me fame
she promised me bright lights
that spell out my name
my name
my name
my name

WOW!!!! &mdash 06/26/06 - 03:27:59 PM
Love it from the beginning! It`s a bit static, but I think there`s potential for much more. Joni Mitchell comes to mind and that means mastership in songwriting.

A little disturbing in the way that you intended... very creative and
masterful backing vox... agree Joni M in there (whom I love)... your
change (lift) into the chorus is so right... I think the ending is brilliant..

you are a very creative... braaaavooo

Fifths. Augmented sevenths. &mdash 06/26/06 - 04:25:31 PM
Those are, like, musical terms, right?

People who can do this kind of thing...and then people who can
DESCRIBE what they just did intelligently...

Yep, it's got that dissonant jangle, and the lyric works with it. Reminds
me of Roches stuff like "Want Not"...those odd high Terre Roche
harmonies...

Maybe "She Goes Steady With The Maestro", too...

Really sophisticated, Stacey, but not pointlessly sophisticated, which
tends to annoy me. The sophistication here works in service to the
song. You seem to have a talent for that.

one Jonichord there may be but this is all yours. No fuzzy warbles here.

Wow Stacey .... &mdash 06/26/06 - 06:56:58 PM
You have such a singing talent that makes me want to delete all my amateurish stuff .... I love the way you are able to conceptualize the melodies and harmony tracks and blend them in so nicely and smoothly .. they always sound like they just "belong" there .... and of course I am a huge lover of all musical things dark and moody .. so its no surprise that I liked this one .. I am also a big fan of what I call the ODD notes .... (as opposed to the even notes ???? - I think I did make that up ....) ... keep em coming ... and yes Iagree with the others ... you should be "marketing" your stuff - its good enough !!!!

Disappointing... &mdash 06/26/06 - 08:03:02 PM
I thought it was a paean to my retired alter ego, Joe HOLLYWOOD. ;-)

This is a very interesting piece, Stacey. As Ingo (I.G.M.) pointed out,
there's potential for much more, but any producer or arranger worth
their salt would hear that and would be eager to flesh it out.

It's a bit edgy, eerie and disturbing, but haunting and lovely, as well.

I'm thinking this would have been nice for the soundtrack of
"Mulholland Drive." Hmmm... maybe you ought to see if David Lynch is
currently working on anything. I think he would like this. ;-)

Ode to La La Land &mdash 06/26/06 - 09:57:22 PM
At one time, you too, must have been the new kid on the block in
Hollywood. LA is dissonance incarnate...I usually don't like dissonant
music, but this one really works for me and it suits the topic
perfectly...You are a very talented person, and this song really showcases
what you can do....Great work Stacy! A definite down-load for me....thank
you. Peace, Norman

Be sure to take some time to get away and take in some nature. Trees, grass,
water, fresh air, healthy food, are important to keep the inspiration
flowing....Peace and Light to you, Norman

Joni Mitchell meets Grimm &mdash 06/27/06 - 06:04:58 AM
This is now my favorite of your growing catalog. Shades of Joni Mitchell
with the darkness of Grimm. My only suggestion is to replace the ending
verse synth with a real instrument to maintain the integrity of sound
you've established, perhaps a violin or cello, or drop the sound entirely.
Superb track.

Very high quality &mdash 06/30/06 - 10:27:30 AM
Among this song's many strengths is its uniqueness. The chord
progression is very creative and the melody takes great advantage of it.
The background vocals add a sweet touch, and the sound of the
chorused guitar is very effective. I love the ebb and flow of the
intensity. This song, aided by your convincing and skillful vocal track,
is masterfully evocative, which is its triumph.

I agree with Tobin that replacing or eliminating the synth string sound
would make this wonderful song even better, and I agree with Joe that
a skilled producer and arranger could take this song to another realm.
As it is, it is great work, and I hope you're proud of it. I've listened to it
over and over... Thank you for posting this gem.

Fantastic &mdash 07/02/06 - 04:38:43 PM
Great stuff, Stacey. Such a clever song. What Ejh said above -
sophisticated but not pointlessly sophisticated - sums it up perfectly.
The harmonies are very cool, and I love your voice.

I agree..kind of a Joni M. deal going. Very facinating progression. And exceptional vocals an harmonies. I think I would have liked to hear that nice guitar performance with a more natural acoustic sound. (sans chorus?)
bravo!!!

The Seduction of Stacey &mdash 07/15/06 - 04:36:29 PM
I liked the emptiness of promise that "Hollywood" offered.

Good lyrics with the right approach on the arrangement. It created the
right bed for the lyrics to lie, or is that lay, in.

Very good vocals too.
