Description:
Vocals by my favorite ingenue who is getting married next week, Emily Rohm. She makes it sound like a light classical aire, I originally placed it in the classical genre; but it is really a pop ballad done with a legit voice. This is the developed yet sparse arrangement (using 2 harps, an introductory synth wash, and a key change) of the song demo, Dreams that won the first MacJams song contest in 2004. Emily does a great job with this song and I wish her all the best as she begins her wonderful new wedded chapter of her already wonderful life. (The song, by the way, is deceptively simple and breaks many rules of harmonics and composition, yet swirls around a magnetic tonal center, like a dream. But it is meant to float seamlessly. ) Artwork by Stephen Hagg Stahlberg.
Other versions:
Dreams I (original voice and piano)
Dreams III (for jazz vocalist and piano trio)
Lyrics:
Dreams.
What are you dreaming?
Do you know I am here, while you sleep?
What do you see when my hands hold you near?
When my breath touches you, can you feel?
Maybe when you awake, you'll know to never fear
that I should go away.
You'll know I'm always near, when you awake.
When you awake to me.
When you awake to me,
all the world's ache will fall away, like clay, cleaned away.
I'll give you all you need.
Make every dream come true.
All you can take from me.
All I can give to you.
When you awake.
When you awake to me.

Just lovely &mdash 06/25/04 - 12:16:22 PM
Wonderful song writing, beautiful vocals! This piece is all about smart choices in the chords and an outstanding performance. Can we assume this will be played/performed at the wedding? [ Reply to This ]
I almost want... &mdash 06/25/04 - 12:31:02 PM
...to hear Aaron (from the first version) and Emily's voices
intertwine, and alternate verses. I liked the first version,
and now I'm torn between them. I DO love the harp,
though. Higher marks this time around.

Lovely! &mdash 06/25/04 - 05:57:12 PM
Wonderful writing for the harp parts and vocals, superbly
sung by Emily.
As a "live" harpist, I wish that the harps were REAL. What a
fantastic sound that would be! Hopefully, real acoustic
harps will perform this piece either at Emily's wedding or
at some other time; you've written a great piece!!!
I'd love to hear more of this kind of writing (for harps, of
course!)
Someday I'll get a mic and would be glad to collaborate on
your harp tracks in the future.
Wonderful piece of music! Also, the very lovely song art
complements it all perfectly.

the invitation. I'll email you shortly... [ Reply to This ]

Breath giving! &mdash 07/02/04 - 11:32:16 AM
I finally have a moment to leave a comment for this... This doesn't so much take my breath away as it gives me more air to breath... fantastic. Emily's voice is terrific. She's captured the feel of each word... her translations of the notes tells us the story vividly. The writing is refreshing... I especially like the break in the middle... "I'm always near, when you awake. When you awake to me." The melody and chord structure here is unfamiliar enough to catch my attention yet soothingly beautiful. [ Reply to This ]
Breath giving! &mdash 12/28/04 - 12:45:12 PM
Thanks for the cool comment about breath giving. I wanted to vary the
melody in the second section to create a sense of uplift and growing intensity
in a new sort of way. But your breath comment, that takes the cake. [ Reply to This ]
Airy &mdash 07/09/04 - 02:39:39 PM
What a beautiful, haunting tune. Really stands out, performance wise. Great, "airy" production too. well done! [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful!!! &mdash 08/02/04 - 03:18:21 PM
Simple, effective, intoxicating...beautiful vocals. Is Emily in theatre? Truly enchanting! I have to agree with one of the other posts in that it calls for a live harp...a demo however, who's to complain. [ Reply to This ]

Yes, Emily is in theatre. She received her Equity card in one of my shows.
(And she is as pretty as her voice!) And this song is destined to be one of my
shows too. Thanks for your wonderful comments. [ Reply to This ]

As someone who has no skill and can only listen to music,
all you talented people make me mad! This is a really
interesting song and the music is particularly effective.
How do you people do it!
Thanks for posting the lyrics.

Please tell me this woman has a recording contract? You
can not just keep her to yourself! Ok, musically, I mean :-)
Oh, your part wasn't bad either. [ Reply to This ]
Bee-you-tee-full! &mdash 02/10/05 - 09:44:09 PM
No contracts yet...! Thanks so much for the compliment! This has been one of my alltime favorite songs to sing. I sing it in the shower all the time. (I don't think Tobin knows that.) I never get tired of it. [ Reply to This ]
gorgeous &mdash 03/10/05 - 02:47:02 AM

vocals. the simplicity definately works. not much more i

Stephen does great work. For more of his art, please see: http://

contracted the first CGI female model with an international modeling
company. [ Reply to This ]
Heaven &mdash 04/07/05 - 07:16:54 AM
A jewel. You can be overly complex and pull it off; smooth
and simple and direct and make it sound like this. Kind of
a song that some around once in a dreamy moon. Emily,
harps, angels, nude art... I'm in heaven. [ Reply to This ]
pristine &mdash 04/28/06 - 12:26:19 PM
Love the simplicity, and Ms. Rohm's voice is perfect for this! This is a
gem. Nothing over-done; everything just right. I agree that this is the
right genre for this song. Great work, Tobin and Emily. Your talent is
huge, and we're all lucky you share it with us. [ Reply to This ]
