Description
This is a song about my Mother. She has Multiple Sclerosis and I often find it hard to remember her healthy. These are my memories...

Lyrics
Intro

Sometimes, there are glimpses of
Mere glimpses
Sometimes, there are glimpses of
Mere glimpses

Verses

It could be
The curl in your hair

It could be
The shape of your hands
With the ring
On your finger

Or it could be
The smell of your clothes
Bounce and swim
Through the tides

Or it could be
The rappity-tap of telephone cords
A swamp
With many pillows

Chorus

Oh, we were just
Innocent faces
With innocent minds

Oh, we were just
Under false tenses
With false reprieve

Oh, we were just
Wrapped up in laces
With smiles and sharp cries

Oh, we were just
Small and dependant
With wide, open eyes

Repeat Intro

This is a work in progress because my MAudio Duo is broken. I've just used Midi and the Mac built-in microphone for recording the audio tracks.
Software:
GarageBand

This is pretty good work for your first posting here. It is a very touching song and you can hear the depth of emotion in the voice. The Performance is pretty good too.

A couple minor critiques: the recording level seems a little bit low - I know this is probably mostly a function of the fact that your MAudio interface isnt' working. There are a lot of little pops and hisses in there, but again these can be resolved with a good interface. I like the melody of the solos in the intro and the outro, but I think the sound is a bit "computerish". I'm not sure what soft synth you are using for your midi, but IMO this would sound really nice played on an acoustic guitar with a bit of reverb.

Overall a very nice first effort though. Congrats and welcome to the MacJams family.

some comments
Thank you so much for the comments. I agree completely with all of them.
Once the audio interface is replaced I would like to play the 'flute' solo live on
my soprano sax. I think it should be much nicer. Since I will probably have to
buy a new interface in the US this summer, could anybody suggest a good
one? Lastly, with software instrument sounds, do you know of any other
places to get better sounds? I am just using the built-in garage band sounds
for now. I also have Logic that I run on Classic. Can I import the sounds from
there or not? I'm still quite new to all of these programs so any advice is
welcome:)

good song Laura
Welcome to MJ... I can see you're already making yourself at home...
cool... you have a good composition here... the saddness comes
through, there is also an undercurrent of resignation in your
performance, while at the same time trying to put a brave face on it...
We need to get you a better mike to match the great voice... it sounds
all most out of phase, or do you have some effect on the vox... the
nature of the song is personal, almost like we are in your livingroom as
you show us the song... if you take off or shorten the reverb.. it will
become more intimate...

one of my songs is called "Glimpses"

great start Laura

Moving
I get the impression that you've got a lovely voice (full of passion) which is
a bit lost behind the various effects (ah I see you used the internal mic -
which probably doesn't help). Inevitably this has a demo feel about it but
it's an excellent song (with fine lyrics) might be worth having another
crack at it once your equipment woes are sorted. I'm very glad I listened
- welcome to MJ.

A great start....
I especially loved the line 'A swamp with many pillows'. The phrase evoked many images. Five words but they stopped me in my tracks.

More songs, tunes, whatever. S'il vous plait.

touching ..
I love the "glimpes ... singing and harmonies particularily in the
return to it at the outro with the delay rather than the intro - it is
infinitely better there.. and I like that effect
on your voice there, which is very good - give that old film quality .. it seems apt.

The sadness comes across and is very touching.

Production under the circumstances isn't that bad .. the low-fi approach works no problem for the outro .. but the verses would benefit most from some re-working ..and I think a real violin or solo trumpet(muted) playing the current flute part would also give an improvement. Structure wise I'd like it to build
more each time with instruments in the verses- like the way the singing is having more emphasis and passion .. it seems the backing is
getting behind .. then it makes the return to the intro a more graceful
and tranquil thing .. which would add to some of the reflectiveness of
the piece.

so helpful
Thank you very much for your thoughtful comments. I really appreciate you taking the time to give so many useful suggestions. I am working on this song right now and it was very nice to read. I have taken the solo at the beginning out and will play live saxophone for the moment on the outro. I dream of a live violin which is what I have always heard there, but I don't know any violinists here - yet. I am also adding another guitar to the song - fill-type to help build the song a bit better. Plus, some more vocal harmonies as the song progresses. I can't wait for the new version to be finished to post it:) Thanks again for your comments. Peace, Laurie
