so i haven't had all my coffee yet, but i've already consumed your flirtation
with happy hardcore.
it's fun. i like the main theme. some of the percussion reminds me of
dune. only slower. those germans are nutty.
you really do have a way with

I get a hyper-erasure vibe from this... I think it is the chord changes. It reminds me a little of a sped up "Drama!"... this needs some vocals!! I like that theremin-like sound... that's the best part! I do get the feeling that this could use a little more thump in the beat, though... or have I become too de-sensitized to thumping beats? this is totally some sped up drama chords, stun. i've been tinkering around with
a lot of little things lately, and this is my first bit to come out. i'm trying to get a
personal hold of chord movement, so i stripped the song to just that, then came
back in with my own thereminy meanderings, adding in the basics too, to try
and figure out how you get from chord to, well, otherstuff. hence-
simplification.
i had a problem putting more balls on my beat w/out cancelling some of the
synth lines crackles and purity. suggestions?

Well, the only thing I can suggest are a few things I have tried myself...
1. make everything else quieter, so the beat is louder. (This can be annoying to do, though, and it sometimes makes other things too quiet.)
2. add distortion... the easy way out! (that gets rid of the nice pure synth sound, though and sometimes makes it sound messy)
3. experiment with layering different types of percussion on top of those selected beats. This can be a little tedious, but it just might work.
4. Find a song that is already produced that has a killer beat, "sample" the beat and isolate it, then either replace your beat with that beat or layer it on top. Isn't that cheating? Nah...
I bet you can find a lot more ideas out there if you ask around... [ Reply to This ]

This is happy music and I love it. Pardon my ignorance, did you say you're playing a Theremin on this? I really liked the song! [ Reply to This ]

thanks for the aknowledgement and enthusiasm, secamode.
unfortunately i'm not playing the theremin in this piece. my comment above about my 'thereminy meanderings' was meant to speak of my trying to emulate the timbre and expressive power of the theremin. basically coming down to a very controlled and rehearsed performance of modulation and velocity sliders. i have a real fascination with the theremin, but have yet the time and resources to buy a kit, build one, and master it. in the meantime, i fake it!
glad you liked this piece. i've been working on a lot of covers over the past year to focus in on my programming and production skills, as well as glean a little knowledge about hook construction from some masters. this piece, i felt, was more of a deconstruction that a full on cover, so i felt comfortable posting it on macjams. the original piece hails from the late eighties- 'drama!' by erasure. i was hoping to capture, and reinvent, the hi-nrg excitement that the original pours forth.
