Description:
Every now and then, it's fun to try something new.
This is a remix of a collaboration I did elsewhere in May '06.
Mystified: lyrics/vocals
ponkey: instrumental and original mix.
The concept for the song came from a friend of ponkey's who decided that this year for Lent, she was going to give up.... Lent.
The original title was "Decadence is the New Abstinence," which I varied slightly as I created the lyrics.
After the first mix, in which I added vox over the mp3, ponkey kindly sent me the GB file so I could mix the vocals in properly.
Special thanks goes to I.Spike and to Matt Granz for valuable listens and suggestions on handling the vocals mix, as this is not my usual genre ;)
Thanks, too, to ponkey for providing the terrific instrumental in the first place, and for giving me permission to post this song here at MacJams.

Lyrics:
Do what you want to--you will, anywayThere's so little difference from the things that I say--to you.
I'd tell you my heart, but I'm afraid....
You'd hear...you'd hear....the truth....the truth.....the truth
You're so afraid that someone will care--for you
So paralyzed by the chance they might dare--to really love you.
Why do you cling to the past when it hurts you
And run to the arms of your very next fling?
You wallow in whims, they're your best consolation
And you're scared you might find the 'real thing.'
oh yeah...oh yeah...it's true....
Your decadence is the abstinence....from love
Your decadence is the abstinence ...from real love.
You're living in fear 'cause you don't understand it.
You're living alone 'cause you'd rather not change.
You're telling yourself it's the life that you've dreamed of,
But you're living those dreams rearranged.
Ask me no questions--I'll tell you no lies.
But the truth of the matter lies deep in my eyes
Why do you cling to the past when it hurts you
And run to the arms of your very next fling
You wallow in whims, they're your best consolation
And you're scared you might find 'the real thing.'
You're living in fear 'cause you don't understand it.
You're living alone 'cause you'd rather not change.
You're telling yourself it's the life that you've dreamed of
But your decadence is the abstinence....of love.

Cat- I almost didn't recognize your voice! This is wonderful! And a step
closer to Heavy Metal Mysti.
Mystified
Thanks, AC :)
I'm a vocal chameleon, I guess?
This was a lot of fun, I do know that!
Mcboy
there was an alt-rock chick in ya....hehhehhe.....
Mystified
Heheheeeee
Thanks, Mcboy! ;)

Oh yeah, its always a good idea to try out some new genres from time to time. The vocal melody line in this is awesome, especially in the verses. Just one tiny suggestion: some vocal harmonies could suit the chorus well... Whatever, a very enchanting song to me.

Mystified
Thank you very much for your comments on this...
I did try to put some harmonies to the chorus, but I just wasn't happy with what I came up with, so I left it as is.
I probably just need to listen closer to similar songs of this genre so I get an idea of what works best.
Thanks again for your kind comments!
ktb
but i'd never know the way you make the track come alive. def a alt.
indie feel. kudo's to both of you for a great collab.
Mystified
Thanks for your comments.
I agree that ponkey's track brought out the 'voice' in this one.
It's fun to see how, as a singer, your voice adjusts to different 'colors' of sound.
This was a blast.

Wow Mysti, your voice is really well suited to singing like this. Great song, and singing. I hope you do more like this!
Mystified
Thanks, David :)
It was a lot of fun!
Rebsie
I wish I had the genre-hopping vocal ability you have!
Very nice indeed.
Mystified
Thank you, Rebsie, though I hope you know how much I admire your ability to sing and play so wonderfully, and in the amazing music that you make!

Good job Mysti...
While it might suggest the possibility of a more complicated arrangement
to some, it works in this minimal form quite nicely.
Good *stretch* for you. It sounds great. ;-)

Your voice is amazingly strong, and works so well with this song, it's
lyrics, and great beat....what versatility you have will your voice..... it
sounds like fun!!!!! Nice Mysti! ;)The NightBird

...and time. You manage to lighten up and get rocking without
sounding like a classically trained person slumming, which I for one
hate.
You use your voice very suitably for the song. I would not have listened
to this and thought, "Ah...Mystified...", nor would I have listened to this
and thought, "Ah...Mystified...trying not to sound like Mystified..."
Sounds natural and unaffected to me.
Post them lyrics and all manner of things shall be well.
Ed
Sounds great, good to see you still growing and trying new things Myst
Kind of reminds me of Patti smith, excellent!

I must just say your voice sounds just terrific here, by making
comparisons I'd say a bit of Ami Mann and Chrisy Hynde. Crisp and clear
and beautiful. Do more experimentation in this genre as it very much
suits your voice. Ya got balls there. Beautiful !!
Scott Carmichael
this sounds great... I listened twice, soft and then loud... this has a real
Pretenders vibe... good 80's rock w a more modern sounding chorus...
I would love to read the lyrics as I listen... your voice is a real effective
instrument here... good dynamics in your emotion

What a catchy tune! Your voice is so awesome. I love the tone and
quality. You have such and ear for lyric and melody! I really like this
one! Garageband, baby, indeed!
Andronis
As always, I love everything you do. You seem to excel in any genre. Your vocals are always world class, and your lyrics are always particularly intelligent for the genre of song. Goodness knows what you'd do if you tried out rap.

Your voice works so well in this setting - it's a terrific song: music, words
all good. I've listened a few times now - really enjoying it. There are a
couple of times when I feel your voice could be forward just a little bit
more - mainly when the accompaniment is going at full tilt. But that's
minor stuff - this is a fine performance (and the raunchiest I've ever heard
you!). Time to invest in a worn leather jacket and a pair of frayed jeans
with huge holes in the knees!!

i love the lyrics.. i can picture hearing it on the radio as a huge hit!!! love it!
Einarus
I remember hearing this song over iComp.
I liked it then and I like it now.
Nice to hear you trying out new things - and succeeding at it, I might add!

.. a nice treat for me .... being a fan of your ethereal floating ... swirling .... hypnotic .... mysitifications ..... I enjoyed hearing a brazen submission of your voice ! Nice and clear .... you should do more of this type of song .. showcase what you are capable of vocally .... you may say this is outside of your comfort zone ... but from my ears ... the fit was custom made !

Barney and Cat: this is a very special song. The instrumentation is wonderful, and classic Ponkey. And the lyrics as well as the vocal performance are stand-out. As Cat said, you can take the girl out of the opera but you can't take the opera out of the girl. Nicely done - and so glad you dared.
