Justify This (CD version)

Description
(This is the final CD mastered version. Not hugely different than the previous version I posted here, but I figured that if I'm gonna have the song up on the web for people to hear and download that it better be the absolute best final version. Basically just final EQ tweaks and a little volume optimization.)

I wrote this song in the fall of 2004 as a direct challenge to the Bush administration and their enablers. It was the first song I recorded in Garage Band and it's what really got the musical inspiration flowing in me that led to all this other music I have made since and the album "SOMETHING" inwhich this song is track number 8.

Lyrics
Do you feel it, the pressure building under your thumb
electric signals away
Just how many miles does it take you 'til you're comfortably numb
Does it make you feel safe?
Can you justify this?
Can you justify this?

How many times have they told you what you wanted to hear
after they told you what you wanted?
Do you even know where the war is or what the killing is for
Secret signals away.
Can you justify that?
Can you justify that?

And I know, I know, I know what you think
'cause I've heard it before
And they know, they know, 'cause they played on your fears
in a bid for your obedience.
Are you too scared to ask
what you're scared of?

How many lies can they tell you before you'll stop believing
it's not a crime if you need it?
And when it's over and the truth comes will you call on the dead
to see the prize you have won?
Could you justify that?
Did you justify that?
How could you justify that?

Loved it before
Loved it before and this version is no disappointment. You get such a
clean sound here Peter - what a great voice! I can feel the emotion
behind the words - an excellent song.

Thanks, Neil, for dropping by to leave a comment. If we were allowed to I would
have simply updated the file without the fanfare of a whole new song post.

Enjoyed it.
Nice sound. I didn't get to hear the original one but will give it a listen to
compare the two. Enjoyed it.

Thanks. There's really not anything significant to compare between this
version and the previous one. I suppose that if you had them both loaded at
the same time and did an A/B comparison you'd notice the slight
adjustments. As I said above, I would have just updated the file on the
previous song page if that were allowed at MJ. I put off uploading this final
CD version for a long time simply because the changes, while important to
me, seemed too minor to warrant the fanfare of a whole new song
submission and the loss of all the comments people made that would still be
just as applicable to this version.

I was eventually motivated to put the absolute final CD version up here
because I just didn't like the idea that people would be hearing and
downloading an inferior version, however minor and the difference.

I think, I hope...
...that I already told you that this is one of my favorites from the CD.

You're just good, Peter, ya know that? You've got some kind of solid
songwriting and musical instincts.

Attention..
..to detail. Really impresses me. I like, right off, the use of delay that
matches up with the guitar, then become it's own sound. Just a great
build of sounds. Great singing and effects applied to the various
voices. Normally I have reservations about songs that have sound clips
from elsewhere, however, you pull it off very tastfully. And you got that
crazy vocal ability that makes those harmonies a treat.

Where have you been young man? Out cavorting around cyberspace?
Peter, you're never home anymore. ;-(

Attention..
Hey, Mr Oop. Thanks.

Yeah, all those sound clips are from speeches people made at the Republican
convention in NY for the 2004 elections.

I've been lurking at MJ but spending generally a lot less time here than I was a
while back. I've been busy playing live webcasts; this tune (the live acoustic
version) goes over really well with the audiences.

Taking a break from writing and recording to refresh.

The artist
Aside from your fantastic arrangement, vocal performance, lyrics, etc.,
there is something on an intuitive level that transcends. The care,
thought, art you have woven into a very competent protest song has lifted
this piece into a timeless statement, the artist telling the truth to power.
Awful beauty.

Wow!
This one made my day. Truly. Beautifully sung and played. Amazing mix.
Vital message as applicable to the Iraq War as to Stalin's purges or any
other political lunacy in recent history. Thanks for this one!

Be well!

great music
Thanks, McBoy. Yeah, not on iTunes. The CD is available at Simig Media (link
above) and also CD Baby. I was originally considering selling at iTunes but the
combination of preferring CD sales to piecemeal downloads and the stories I've
heard about actually getting money from Apple kinda made it... *shrugs
shoulders*

Really improved apon
I think that time has improved on this song. I also believe that the more you perform a song the more it models itself into being your own and your own style. So true to your tune. Maybe Mr. President will come by and take a listen some time, it would be Damn Well Worth it for him... Then he could maybe ponder your points and come to a realization. Sorry I couldn't help it... Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Tex. I suppose "The Decider" wouldn't understand the question but it
would be a dream if I could somehow sway his/their thinking for the better with
the song. It's a dream.

I really enjoyed this
Great song, and so cleanly and well performed, full of body and sound without clutter. Some of the panning felt dramatic with these headphones on, but a great effect in the song. Thanks for sharing.
