Description:
You take inspiration wherever you can get it from... I found it one night back in the 80s, when I had been divorced for awhile and sat, minding my own business, listening to friends of mine who were playing at a large restaurant/lounge. You'll find the rest of the tale in the song... except for the fact that we dated for about two years after that.
This is a remix of a LIVE basement session, recorded at the home of a fine *hobbyist* drummer, Bob Baker.
This, the second of three takes, included four discrete MONO tracks: 1) Drums; 2) Vocal; 3) Rhythm Guitar; and 4) Faux Bass.
I brought those tracks into LogicExpress and added some harmonies to the chorus, a little synth part and some little guitar pieces.
This was definitely slated to be a *JOE HOLLYWOOD* number. He was such a slut! :D
Lyrics:
LAST NIGHT
Music & Lyrics © 2006 By J.A. Stewart
— ALL RIGHTS RESERVED —
I woke up this morning with a smile on my face
I guess I had a good time Last Night,
I guess that everything went alright
I found a woman to hold me tight, Last Night
I woke up this morning with a girl in my arms
I know I had a good time Last Night
appears that everything worked alright
I found this woman, she pulled me through Last Night
Chorus:
Last Night, Last Night, Last Night, etc.
I drank too much bourbon, it went right to my head
And then this lady sat on my right
We talked and laughed and then danced, oh so tight
and then she asked me to stay with her, Last Night
I woke up this morning in a strange, unfamiliar place
I’m sure I had a good time Last Night
It’s clear that everything worked out right
I found this woman who got to me Last Night.
Last Night............

Thanks for listening and commenting, Jonathan.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did try to slip a little bit of humor into the lyric. I hope
that is what you found funny. ;-)

Really nice Mix &mdash 07/11/06 - 03:11:15 PM
It's amazing what you can do now days with the technology available. What is really cool is to find some one add some old tracks into this technology and enhance it even more. Just for that it deserves a 10 somewhere. Another point I would like to include is the fact that you came up with this song in the 80's and to me it's quit current. Isn't that nice about music... doesn't really need the technology in that aspect. Really catchy and way off the wall for an 80's listener. Outstanding comp and great mix... thanks for sharing.

Really nice Mix &mdash 07/12/06 - 08:03:46 AM
Thanks for your comments, John.
On the tech side, working with the old 4-channel reel-to-reel recorders back
in the 70s and 80s seems rather primitive now. You had to produce
near-flawless performances in real time of each part to achieve a
good demo recording.
These demos were truly performances... played in full, as if for a
club audience.
Today, you can build a composition piece-by-piece, cut and paste repeating
parts, etc. The biggest improvement that I appreciate is the sound quality
when monitoring for vocals and harmonies. Monitoring on those old tape
machines was accomplished by a separate playback head on the recorder.
The fidelity was muddy and lo-fi, at best. It made it a challenge to accurately
overdub harmony parts.
On the social side, the pre-AIDS 80s were relatively relatively free-wheeling
and uncomplicated. How *current* its message or appeal might be? I burned
a copy of it for my son to give to a buddy of his... who apparently just had a
similar experience. The beat goes on, eh? ;-)

Fun pop! &mdash 07/12/06 - 02:38:41 AM
Fun, infectious, silly, and fully professional. Great production=I really
enjoyed everything about this.
I get that it's basically a silly/'up' song, and this may be an off-the-wall
comment, but I it would have been REALLY cool to throw in an ironic
twist at the very end... So, possibly after waking up in a "strange
unfamiliar place," and singing "it is clear that I had a good time last
night," you tell us something completely unexpected, like, oh I don't
know, it turns out you'd been in a fight, had a fright, your wallet was
light, etc. There's lots of possibilities that rhyme with ''-ight!"
Very fine singing, with lots of stylized nuances, and a great job overall! [ Reply to This ]
Fun pop! &mdash 07/12/06 - 08:36:20 AM
I'm glad you enjoyed the song, Clark.
An Up tune in the particular context of the theme is certainly an
interesting... and appropriate choice of words. :D But I prefer to view it as a
celebratory exclamation. The incident followed a self-imposed six-
month period of personal retreat and contemplation after my divorce.
While I fully appreciate and enjoy life's constant ironies and often try to
observe them in my lyrics, this particular song was handled in somewhat
more formal reportorial fashion. For me, at that particular time, it
was... Front-Page News. ;-)

Welcome to MacJams, Andy.
Thanks for listening and commenting. Glad you enjoyed it.
Over the years I've grown accustomed to hearing people compare me with a
variety of performers, but no one's ever mentioned Dr. John??? That's a first.
Sorry, I don't remember him... as a baby model on Ivory Snow boxes. :D
Besides, as must be clear from my tale, I was obviously in the *Right Place* at
the *Right Time*. ;-)

songs Joe. I really groove on well written pop tunes. Solid vocal work.

In many respects it's harder to stay within the confines of the old

nicely done track, oodles of energy .. reminds me a bit of the Cars "just
what I needed" (probably keyboards) with a touch of the Sweet in places ..
particularly excellent vocals and guitar work, good structure too
.. would be a great live number ..

Thanks, Daft...
Although it no longer sounds like it, this tune *was* done live...
with just my rhythm guitar, drums and my vocal.
Adding the additional parts and FX gave it more of a studio sound.
I'm glad you likes it... the good times CONTINUE to roll. ;-)

Thx, eleveneyes...
As an excellent producer yourself, you know how hard it can be sometimes to
evoke that energy... and capture it... especially in an environment where you are
staring at a furnace and ducts. LOL
But apparently the inspiration of that night was enough to get me through it. ;)

A bit of... &mdash 07/18/07 - 01:17:22 PM
the Cars sound, Ric Ocasek vocally. The keyboard is definitely a Cars sound. Were you going for that? Sounds like it. The song was produced really well. [ Reply to This ]
A bit of &mdash 07/18/07 - 03:13:17 PM
No, I wasn't consciously aiming for a Cars sound. But the live basic tracks I digitized from a 4-track recording are from that era. So perhaps I unconsciously picked up on that zeitgeist.
Thanks for the listen and the comment, Tim.

Outstanding song &mdash 07/19/07 - 02:02:41 PM
I worked as a music director in a pop station back in the 70s and a bit into the 80s and this is as good as anything I remember auditioning in those days. That does not mean that the song sounds dated in anyway. I still believe a good pop song is a good pop song.
Part of the appeal of this song may be the way it was recorded. It has a "second take" enthusiasm about it which is hard to create when working (and overworking) individual tracks. [ Reply to This ]
Outstanding Song &mdash 07/19/07 - 06:14:41 PM
Thx for the props, Bill.
I agree with your observation about good pop songs... a good melody with a good hook can survive the test of time. A lot of technology has been added to the Pop music palette since then, but success still largely hinges on a song's melodic content that resonates with the listener.
I also concur about the *enthusiasm* factor. It's a lot easier to muster it when you're working in a "quasi-live" situation, with other musicians playing along. Sitting alone, laying down multitrack layers isn't nearly the same. ;)
If you liked this one, you ought to give my 80s anthem --- "Dance, Dance, Dance" a listen. :)

The homeboys Raspberries have been getting together for the past couple of years and have a DVD coming out.
I did a lot of Beatle covers back in the day, so I guess it occasionally leaks out. lol
