Song Description

More games. An audio palindrome. (Do a web search...) This one is exactly the same if you play it backwards. Had fun with the snare drum and guitar part. What was that Moody Blues song with the backwards gong in it?

love the idea, love the piece... &mdash 07/12/06 - 11:39:43 AM
Given the pacing and mood, it could be longer, but I really like what I hear.

thanks for listening. i could readily lengthen this by playing it through twice! :-)
it would still sound the same backwards, but somehow that seems like cheating.

this has been preying on my mind all day.

how about a longer work in A-B-A structure?

you create the first A to be very similar to, but NOT the same as playing the
first A backwards. Instead, the first A played backwards is exactly the same as
the second A forwards!

now, B needs to self-palindromic (is that a word?) so the symmetry point is
right in the middle of both B and the two balanced A parts. maybe this little
song could be part B?

that could work.

but just getting the beat to work OK in this little song took a bit of trickery.
the usual bass/snare/bass/snare in each measure needed to be reversible.
the key trick is to overlap a forward and backward bass drum, and let the
forward and backward snares alternate.

man, it would take a lot of thought to create something bigger without just
repeating that trick.

Nice idea... with the ABA parts... let me know if you attempt it! I will be there to listen...

hyperpalindrome... &mdash 04/21/07 - 03:04:44 PM
is my suggestion (along the lines of 'hypercube') -- and since a cube is a hyper-square, and a square is a hyper-line, and a line i just a hyper-point....er, or something like that.

These are terms from, um, topology, I believe, the study of surfaces.

simply re-applying the same reversal a few times might work - it would be sort of like folding a piece of paper in half several times...

thanks

MORTAL WOMBAT &mdash 07/23/06 - 02:03:35 PM
That gong was totally made me think of Mortal Kombat, except here, it's Mortal Wombat. I really like the reverse thing, and this song is just really cool. Keep up the "good work = very yes"

interestin, which GB used?

plain GB plus backwards... &mdash 09/15/06 - 05:52:41 PM
this is GB instruments - but i also mixed in a second copy of it played
backwards. i designed the forward sounds so that when you mix in the
backward sounds it all fills in nicely.

What an intriguing idea, and I love the palindromic title, actually had to look at it twice to get it, it was that smooth. This music idea is different from my "Halloween Punch" idea, in that I didn't actually try to design a melody/harmony that would work forward and backward like you did, this piece of yours is quite a bit more elaborate. And on top of that, it is quite enjoyable too. Nice seamless switch from frontwards to backwards, and the choice of instruments is good, but the gong takes the cake... percussion backwards is just so strange :-)
