Description:
Well, I permitted myself for once. A very personal and emotional song.
Just GB's out of the box acoustic guitar, slightly altered, and that's why I put this under 'open collabs'. So, if anyone feels gifted to blow a bit more 'pathos' into this instrument or this track in general, be my guest.
Thanks for listening.
Lyrics:
I nailed your picture in my head
I left no word of you unread
I’ve spend my time to figure out
Just to make sure that this is worth another chapter in my heart
Girl, you got my empathy
Sure I will be damaged, loose my mind
They say love is blind
Is it your eyes that make me feel
You gorgeous smile that looks so real
The pinky colour of your skin
Or just the ordinary midlife man’s position that I’m in
Girl, you’re such a mystery
This boy will be smashed against the wall
But I don’t mind at all
Sue me, nail me
Not innocent, besides these confessions I’m
Truly foolish
Not ignorant, aware of the fact that you’re
Polishing my ego and spoiling me to death
Making me a hero
While I deserve a punishment instead
I’m feeling feeble, imprudent
What kind of flowers should I send
I have no clue of what you feel
I might be lost, that’s why I’m hoping deep inside this isn’t real
Take me out of ecstasy
Moorlandt’s just an ordinary guy
No matter what I try
Moorlandt’s just an ordinary guy
No matter what you try

What a fabulous piece of work. Proof positive that less-is-more! I am
blown to bits by your vox. Sometimes a little Leonard Cohen-ish. Great
lyrics sung with passion and conviction. Simple but beautiful---almost
harp-like---acoustic guitar. I'm lovin' it!
Be well! [ Reply to This ]

This is stunning! &mdash 07/12/06 - 02:04:59 PM
In this raw state, you know that the song will stand up to any treatment as
all good songs do. It has all the sentiment through lyrics and melody, so
any added strings will just build on what essentially is a solid foundation.
That said - this piece can happily stay the way it is, in my book.
I'm on the hunt for a decent mic at a decent price - would you
recommend the Samson USB? It sounds up to job from this track.
Good work - keep them coming! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks a million for listening and commenting. And yes, this Samson mic does the job for me. Although I think I can certainly improve my recording skills. But if you're looking for a fair deal, I'll be the first to recommend this mic.

Mid-life puppy love &mdash 07/12/06 - 02:22:15 PM
Just goes to show that no matter at what age, love can make take you by surprise and make you all puppy-like and drunk. You've captured that feeling of falling in love, and being in love very, very well.
Even though I'm sure this song would do well supported by more instrumentation in the background, it's also quite elegantly simple in its current form.
Really liked this, Walter. Very sweet. [ Reply to This ]

Du bist kein ordinary guy denke ich! &mdash 07/13/06 - 05:44:41 PM
Walter, these lyrics are among the best I've come across at MJ - the
personal story, if you can get it right is always the one that gets to
other people's hearts, and this is an excellent example. You've done
just enough musically with this for the lyrics to shine - personally I
wouldn't add any more instrumentation to it. Only possible thing I'd
think about is get one of the really good guitarists here to maybe re-
do the guitar track for a more authentic sound. (My only criticism is
that repeating buzz on the C in the constant C chord - because the
note is there so often, it just detracts a bit from the rest of the song).
Love the chord changes in the middle section ("sue me, nail me")..
One thing that really astounds me is that you can write this in what is
probably at least your second language - I am very envious of this skill
my friend.

What a great compliment on the lyrics. Thanks so much, Neil. But yes indeed, took me blood, sweat and tears to write them down... in my third language :-)
You're so right about the guitar. That's exactly why I put this under 'open collabs'. I did hear that buzzing on the C chord, bit I was too sloppy to take it out. Shame on me!

unique voice, once again, comes shining through. The melancholy lyrics
reach out and touch 'everyman'. [ Reply to This ]

Reluctant Lover &mdash 07/13/06 - 08:08:08 PM
This song fascinates me. I told you in chat how beautiful I find it and
how much I love the personal nature of the lyrics. It's interesting with
lyrics (and most writing, actually) how words that are specific seem to
most effectively convey the universal.
Something that fascinates me is that this song is about many things. It
seems that the singer doesn't know his love object very well, has nailed
her picture in his head, talks about her smile seeming so real and his
attempts to know her, but her also remaining a mystery and not giving
him a clue of how she feels.
There's also an element of the song being about the singer being
aware that perhaps he and she are both idealizing one another and him
feeling as though it would be safer if the relationship weren't real,
though it would "take (him) out of ecstacy," and turn him back into an
"ordinary guy". So, it's about the transcendent effect of love on a life,
too.
It's also about the nuttiness of whom we choose to love at times. The
confusion of "why her, why him?" As well as being about the risk we all
take when we open ourselves to other people and make ourselves
vulnerable.
You got so much into your lyrics and included so many clever lines,
"just the ordinary midlife man's position that I'm in," being one of my
favorites. I admire your writing tremendously, Walter.
This is such a beautiful song and I've been listening to it all day
because the feeling you convey in the music is moving and powerful.
Thanks for posting it here. [ Reply to This ]

Gosh, Lisa, what an analysis! You simply have been spitting out every word. I'm deeply touched and honoured by this striking comment. Every word you say is exactly to the point. It seems that somehow you know me frightening well :-)
As I also said to Neil here above, these lyrics have cost me so much energy. I think writing them down was 2/3 of the total work on the song. But it seems to be worth it when I read all these lovely comments. Thanks soooo much, Lisa. And you know that I'm looking out for YOUR next song...

The powerlessness of loving &mdash 07/14/06 - 06:35:50 AM
Wonderful simple-is-powerful concept well performed. Its nice with such
a wordy tune that you keep the melody simple too, almost like a talking
song, like Tom Waits. The powerlessness of loving is well illustrated by
everything you do on this track. Excellent. [ Reply to This ]

Very nice &mdash 07/14/06 - 01:36:41 PM
This is a song that's really rich in emotion. You achieved a lot of beautiful depth without having to resort to any sappy tricks, which makes it all the more honest.
Also, I like what your accent does to the vocal inflections for the song. Goes with them really wel. :) [ Reply to This ]
Very nice &mdash 07/14/06 - 02:52:13 PM
Hey, thanks Sam! Greatly appreciated these comments.
I'm anxious to know what exactly you mean by the 'accent' you mention. Is it about the fact that you obviously hear that I'm not native English? Don't worry, I don't take that as an offense or something, just really want to know for myself.

Very nice &mdash 07/14/06 - 04:08:47 PM
Well, I already read that you were from Belgium, so I guess I subconciously knew to listen for it. If I had read that you were from the US or something, I would've just assumed you chose to use unusual diction and inflection on words, since a lot of American singers do that, sometimes so much to the point where it's tacky.
Anyway, accents (unless you're going for one) often disappear when people sing, but the more relaxed nature of the song allowed it to slip in especially when you held out a sound and slid between two notes with it. Provided a nice unique character that really went with the nature of the song. :) [ Reply to This ]
Hey big guy! &mdash 07/14/06 - 07:27:53 PM
Accent is transcended by empathy, feeling, soul & honesty.
It's all there dude. You've really struck a chord. The more I hear it, the more
it hits me.
Poetry. Artistry. Beautifully crafted. Thank you for sharing.

i really like this! this song is very well controlled yet very much
emotionally driven! i find the vocal highly indicative vocal and the guitar
line that has just the perfect speed for the propulsion of song. it is like
