Description:
Ancient Native American's structures are really not that common. The mounds from near where I was raised in Southern Ohio are impressive and I was in awe of them when I visited some years ago. The cliff dwellings of the Anasazi (Ancestral Pueblo people) are even more impressive. The beautiful things they have left behind give rise to more questions about what they were like ... were their lives happy or hard? What did they laugh about and cry about? Did they fall in love? Did they gossip over the "back fence"?
Listen ... I think I can hear their voices.

Miami Vice Meets the Navajo &mdash 07/12/06 - 07:06:10 PM
This is a really cool Jam. It has several distinct parts but maintains it's ever so cool flow. It makes me think of late nights by the fire, smoke accumulating and dancing -- intrigue, fear, excitement and complete abandonment of any reservations.

My only comment is I'd like to hear some vocal. Nice drum break though at the mid poing.

Thanks. Is a remix of a previous version. I lost the vote when I uploaded the
revised version but I felt it needed a bit stronger bass mix. I'm glad you liked
it. Did you hear the voices?

I didn''t hear any voices, but that's cause I;m listening through these lousy speakers. Headphones broke. I'll listen again and keep an ear out for voices.

voices &mdash 07/12/06 - 10:13:28 PM
In this piece I use a guitar echoing string that to me sounds like voices at
times ... especially in the next to last and last verse. Maybe it is just me? I've
been known to listen differently than other people.
Thanks for your comments and
thanks for listening!!!

I am really pleased that you like it. It is one of the pieces that I am proud of
because I think it worked out well and captures the feeling that I wanted to
convey. I often start working on a piece and then try to figure out where IT
wants to lead me. This piece really started with an idea of what I wanted it to
say to others and I built it from there.

Until you have been on a little longer and participated a bit more it takes a
little while for the first song to be approved. After some more experience and
contributions here, its automatic. Be patient and thanks for listening. I look
forward to hearing your contributions to MacJams.

great match &mdash 07/25/06 - 10:30:53 AM
It's obvious the production skills you've acquired are a great match for looping it up in garageband. Your postings show a wide variety of mood, style and technique - as well as a great imagination when it comes to making sound tracks.

Also - good titles for these songs.

I've never been to the Indian mounds in Ohio, but I have explored the cliff houses in the West. A book you may be interested in reading is "1491" by Charles Mann, which is a general survey of recent Native American studies (North, South and Central American), which suggests the so-called "New World" was more populated, more developed, and occupied longer before the arrival of Columbus then current textbook history teaches. I mention it because Mann includes an extensive look at the "mound-builders."

great match &mdash 07/25/06 - 08:17:42 PM
Warren ... thanks for the comments and thank for the tip on the book. I have
become more interested in the idea of ancient cultures in the "new world"
lately because they are so shrouded in mystery. With no written language and
few permanent structures and little real evidence of their existence, they have
shrunk in importance compared to the Asian, European and to a certian
extent the South American cultures, but they were probably very successful
for centuries. BTW I have no real "playing music" skills but I have fun mixing
and putting together other people's loops etc. My father, a classical music
professor for more than 40 years, says that I'm essentially doing the same
thing that Mozart did in his time ... taking riffs from others and working them
into a new piece. You notice that he never said I was as good as Mozart, only
that I was working the same way ;-)

I'm really glad you like it! When I started to spend my time playing with GarageBand, I made music that I liked. To find that someone else likes it too is very amazing to me and pleases me a lot.
