Description:
WARNING: If you're tired of hearing my remixes, feel free to "fuggedaboudit".

Yes, another version of this song. The great thing about GarageBand, is you don't have to keep paying a studio technician everytime you want to remaster a song. At the risk of annoying the heck out of MJ members, for posting this song for the 4th time, I am simply having fun... because I can.

Hardware:
Originaal: 17" PB 1 Ghz 512 Mb RAM
This version: 20" iMac G5 2.4 Ghz 1.5 Mb RAM

Software:
Originally recorded using GarageBand 1, REASON, and LIVE.

This version utilizes the original v2 AIFF dropped in BIAS "PEAK" (Region Flanging, ChannelStrip EQ; MDA MultiBand Compressor/Stereo Spread), for mastering.

Well, &mdash 07/14/06 - 11:02:18 AM
having never heard the previous versions of this, I was glad to have a
listen. As with anythiing I've ever heard of yours, the production values
are impeccable, and the music always interesting, with much attention
to detail.

The first section, which uses that middle-eastern sounding section is
great, and my only suggestion is that if you hear string players (or any
instrument, for that matter) playing this kind of music, there's a fair
amount of pitch sliding going on as an expressive device, and your
pitches are all "pure", so if you ever felt like it, you could try throwing
in some pitch wheel data to colour some of your pitches.

The part that seems prog-rock to me is the synth-based second half,
which also is great, and reminds me a bit of ELP, one of my all-time
favorite bands. It feels kind of unusual to me to combine the quasi-
middle eastern first half and the prog rock second half, but it works!

Keep 'em coming!

Well, &mdash 07/14/06 - 11:16:16 AM
Thanks, again, for your comments. Always appreciated. The problem with the
strings is there are no good sounding MIDI solo instruments (at least that I
can afford!). Those are from REASON, and the mod or picthwheel was way too
synthy. Having used the two year old original file, I left in the strings anyway.
But, I agree 100%. There is a possibility of a friend coming in to record violin
for a few other tracks, so I may lay this one on him!

ELP is my all-time favorite. that Mini-Moog synth simply beckoned to be in
there.

In the original version, there is an extended ending, where the Mid-Eastern
segment reiterates, but lengthened it, and kinda ruined the abruptness that is
there now for impact.

Sincerely,
Alimar

How in the world you get so much volume, with all that space all around without peggin' the meters. Amazing.

I think I said something on a previous version about ELP.... But let's give credit to the author here.... Nice work!

I love the burst of drums, the moog sound, sweet!

Harold, thanks for having a listen. I appreciate your comments. I run the wave
form through so many "clipping" detectors. "Inspector" is a freebie I DLed off the
net. Also, in PEAK, I set it to -.2 dB. Compressors and Limiters work to keep
sound clean and loud.

Thanks for the kudos!

Going for &mdash 07/14/06 - 03:05:49 PM
A little Going For The One clips in there. And then some traveling across a vast desertion after the aftermath. Could there be a survivor? Has a lot of Yes/Wakeman influence... Loved it... I bet you had to get all re-wired up... didn't know you could re-wire with GB or did you use Reason in standalone mode.

Hey TEX, thanks for the comparisons! Yes, I ReWired REASON with GarageBand,
then added a few things in LIVE. PEAK is where it really came together. It seems
every program ReWires now. I appreciate your comments.

Thanks, eDrew... I'm glad you like it. The organ used there is the GB Cathedral

Congratulations! &mdash 07/14/06 - 07:54:48 PM
Truly masterful how you maintain the suspense you build in the first minute until the very end. The reoccuring theme is powerful and when it hides for a little it comes back with a "vengance", stronger and fuller! I think you got everything right in this mix. The energy is amazing and the song definitely reminds of "Return to Forever", except for it's only one person here! In case you're interested in some silly suggestions...the only thing that I noticed as a drummer-the drum fill-in you use (you use it 2 or 3 times) sounds just a little bit akward, as if played with a keyboard (?!) since the rest of the drums is done so extremely well. Anyways, I'm always happy to be impressed by someone's talent and this song certainly delivers! And please keep re-posting, I may never have listened to this otherwise!

Thanks, man. After our long, philisophical discussion in the MJ chat room, I
feel I know you now. It was great talking to you, and I appreciate you taking
the time to comment on this song.

I missed this comment here earlier, and just noticed it tonight.
Experimentation is what it always has been about with me. There are certainly
a lot of elements of my music that need many improvements. There is an
awkward sensibility about most of the MIDI work I do. It comes with the
territory. I'm working on it, though!

Comments such as yours are valuable, and are taken into consideration the
next time around.

It is a pleasure knowing you.

Alimar

Into Alimar's Lens &mdash 07/15/06 - 06:17:05 AM
I always loved the Drama/Yes (Into the Lens, Machine Messiah) feel of
this track. I have longed believed that was one of Yes' best albums. The
middle eastern aspect includes some nice variations on the scale,
reminds me a bit of what Trey Gunn did in the 90s, but it is the
rhythmic repeats (Into the Lens) and synth leads that grab me. I can't
decide whether I like the new instrumentation better, tho. l like
moments in the old version a lot, more pure synth band, less synth
orchestra (my ears didn't like the solo string in the head as much, and
liked your old opening better, cleaner and more direct). Another part I
like better in the old version is the organ entrance 3/4s of the way thru
(without your added flanged thing, which rebelled in my studio
monitors). There are still some spaces left, ever thought of adding a
real guitar? Some aspects of this stirring piece still sound so MIDI,
especially intro (even tho that new harp is very cool) and an overlay of
real instruments is what my ears thirst for. The world can't ever get
enough Prog, and this is great stuff.

...And after all this time, you still don't mind listening to it. Thanks, Tobin. Your
insight has helped me throughout the years. If only a had a network of real
musicians... hey, wait a minute... I DO! When things get rolling on our other
"project", You, Rob, Rick, Bob, and I, can redo this song in full force! Consider it?

This and "Larger Than Life," "Is There Any Peace Anymore," "Sirens...."
We should pass some stuff back and forth so I can add some composition to
some tracks too, if you are willing. Something we could use in Audiocracy?

the beginning section with that incredible sounding strings..the lead
over the hypnotic plucked line. the guitars swells into the prog rock
section. That synth is a dead ringer for that moog lead Kieth Emerson
used a lot. The one I LOVE. Great instrumentation and tasteful use of
effects on the overall mix. Very pro sounding

Thanks for the comments. I love Emerson's portamento. Everything started
around the main melody... and just happened to transform almost by itself. As I
stated before, there is a longer ending, with sound effects, but initial reactions
lead me to eliminate the now inserted beginning, yet still does not contain the
ending.

A prog amalgam &mdash 07/21/06 - 04:32:50 PM
Okay Al...The mysterious middle eastern theme then the ostinato from Supertramp's "Fools Overture" but with that cool eastern flavor...then blasting away Genesis style with the distorted guitar a la Los Endos and the odd meter and synth overlay with choir voices (you know...one of my favs)...then ELP with those square-wave synths and monster organ. The ending sounds a lot like PFM (if you know who they are).

There are enough tid bits in there for a couple of songs that would be consistent unto themselves. Not that you'd want to mess with it more, but some juicy "analog" distortion and a phaser on the organ would be nice (something like PSP Vintage Warmer) to give it that authentic Keith Emerson '70s sound and add some grit.

Lots of fun!

A prog amalgam &mdash 07/21/06 - 09:55:46 PM
I get your gist. This was the second song I ever wrote... and I had to put
EVERYTHING in it. Premiata Forneria Marconi was another influence, from way
back in the days.

The organ could tand to have Emerson's C3 sound, with added percussion,
and the stereo growl of his four HiWatts and leslies. It ain't over till its over.
Thanks for the suggestions, and comments.

I appreciate the time you spent to dissect this tune. I've heard of the PSP
Vintage Warmer from McBoy... maybe it's time to look into it for real.

I'd like to take it to a final level, and may do it down the road.

Nice piece. Seeing that the previous posts are rife with comparisons I would have to say that this has a Genesis ( Peter Gabriel period) type vibe to it. Enjoyed the listen, wonderfully crafted tune!
