I love the grooves you come up with and the stunning song development/production. You are truly a great musician and producer. I had a blast working on this piece and look forward to our next one muh bruthah. Duh fizzle!
PS, there is no six string guitar on this tune, only piccolo bass playing the guitar sounding parts. Piccolo bass sounds like a six-string guitar, but only has 4 strings (at least mine only has 4 strings).
I used my Fender bass, Fender piccolo, M-audio keyboard into garageband, and my firewire solo (an awesome firewire input device). I also used a compressor plugin that McBoy sent me (can't remember the name of it right now).

lines, and I wanted to do them justice, so I'm glad you dig this final

I've corrected the instrument credits; man that piccolo bass is versatile.

I appreciate that about the production; I'm starting to feel like I'm getting a handle on making good mixes--I listen to my older stuff and cringe a bit because of what I've learned since then! Anyway, mixing this was a real challenge, keeping the different tracks from muddying each other up, but I'm starting to understand how to do that better. This is spectacularly stompin' good music... the beat reminds me of
ancient masked tribesmen dancing and conjuring up who-knows-what.
Great keyboards, great drums, great guitars, great vox/fx/tweaks/
pacing... sheesh! Unstoppable madness! Definitely a DL/Fave here for
one of my go-crazy days. My only suggestion would be to have a long
growling ending chord slowly die away at the end instead of (or after) the
doobie-doo singing.

Haha, it reminds me of that too. I think the art probably helps; funny, it's a
picture of an old porchlight and a NYC street from above (both highly
distorted, obviously) and it conjures this tribal mask looking guy, who both
evolved with and was reflected in the music. Thanks for listening and your
suggestion, Eduard, I'm glad you enjoyed this unstoppable madness!

Two Powerhouses &mdash 07/17/06 - 08:18:11 AM
You know, i figured--what the hell--I'll experiment a little with this piccolo bass. I have played it for years....got the idea from Miles Davis, who toured with a piccolo bassist on year who played guitarish lines (although his was a six-string). So, after watching that concert, I took my old Fender Mustang short neck bass, modified it slightly, slapped some piccolo stings on there, and it worked! In this tune, I just let it rip, trying to make it as guitar sounding as possible. I still wish I had the high B and E, like on a six string guitar, because the EADG tuning is really limited in terms of constructing chords. But, that's when I pull out the 'ol keyboard! Tks for checking it out Z. [ Reply to This ]

Someone mentioned hearing lots of musical references here -
definitely correct!! Seriously rocking post! Haven't heard (as far as I'm
aware) a piccolo bass before, and it's a very interesting concept indeed.
The chanting is the bit that sets the tribal feel for me, and the drums
are perfect (are they DoD David?). Only disappointment (and it was just
an "Oh, why'd they do that?", not "Oh dear, they've spoilt it!") was the
ending, which sounded a bit loose.
Excellent track!

Excellent track! &mdash 07/18/06 - 08:29:33 AM
Yeah, we had a couple different endings and I left it to Dave to pick...so that's dave's fault... just kidding dude! Just a little experimentation with some high melodic stuff...kinda airy...i sort of like it, but also could live without it. Maybe we could mix in the chord underneath and that would fatten it up a little. [ Reply to This ]
Excellent track! &mdash 07/18/06 - 06:08:31 PM
Drizzle only gave me two ending options, and I chose the lesser of two evil
loose choices.... so it's Drew's fault. Ha! Actually, I'm thinking that the
looseness is more about the washy, highly-phased, machine style drums I
layered over the ending section, and shortly before the very end too. I liked
em, but they could probably be brought down even lower in the mix because
I do think they're blurring away some of the rhythm section, and making it
sound looser. The drum loops are mostly from the Zero-G and Acid Loops
collections, but there's also a lot of DoD touches throughout--individual hits,
fills and some loops. I'm glad you like this and I appreciate the kind words,
thanks Neil!

Some people should go on vacation more often. It sounds as though
that time in the wilderness did you a lot of good, David because you've
come up with the perfect track to go with Drew's killer bass work. It
really is amazing how much the picolo sounds like a guitar.
This mix is INCREDIBLE, amazing and spectacular. One thing that really
stands out to me is the wonderful tonal balance. I think with a drum
heavy, bass heavy track it would be a massive battle to keep the
freqencies balanced so the song didn't end up with too much bottom.
You've made some cool choices, with the finger cymbals and vocals to
keep things with a rich spectrum of sound.

Bursting with raw energy and lots of quite outstanding creative ideas and energy, I have to say this my favorite song of yours so far! Impressive work! The "bell" sound contrasts the solid layer of synths, rhythm and cool guitar riffs. It'a amazing how you manage to mix so many different styles and make it sound organic. Quite often music like this feels "over-mixed" and "contrieved". Not this one! Excellent sense of instrumentation and mixing. The modified voices work extremely well. Great, I'm glad you were able to rock out to this with headphones; I tried to
make it a 3-d experience :) And I'm glad you liked the production on this,
thanks... I'm really working on improving.
There was a little bit of sending tracks back and forth, but basically yes, I just
started with Drew's original bass and piccolo bass tracks. Then I constructed
the drum tracks by looping each bass groove and trying on many many many
many drum loops to try to zero in on ones that matched and enhanced his
grooves. Through most of the song, there are two drumsets playing--
different grooves that both match the basslines. When Drew heard how I was
shaping the beats and where I put vocals and etc., he sent me more tracks of
the piccolo bass and keyboards. And then I sprinkled fills, accents, beats,
sound fx and etc (I added 9 tracks to his 5). Most of the mixing involved
adjusting panning and volume envelopes, and using EQ, compression and a
lot of other filters, until I felt like I was disentangling the pieces. It was fun
and challenging and it's enough to make me ramble. Thank you very much,
John; you call it mind blowing, which is the best description I could hope for.

I think I"ve heard that instrument only twice. Stanley Clark plays one, but
presumably that's an acoustic. And I believe Arthur Barrow (who played
with Zappa) plays a whole bunch of bass parts including piccolo on "tink

This is a seriously good tune. Great bass parts and the rest is filled in
quite imaginatively. The synths, vocals, drums, and effects are all
excellent. Professional stuff. [ Reply to This ]
