Keywords:
sometimes (9)amble (4)grapefruit (5)unterwafter (3) harmony assistant (9) kevmikwa (2)drakonis (55)
Description:
Sometimes...
As we walk along the beach, sometimes the waves wash beautiful shells up on shore for us to pick up, and sometimes the waves wash all the shells away, leaving us with nothing but miles of sand. Sometimes we gaze at the dazzling sunset, and sometimes the sun just irritates our eyes. Sometimes the harder we work, the poorer we get. Sometimes the quieter we sit, the noisier life becomes. Sometimes the more we love, the lonelier we become. Sometimes by giving up hope, we get everything we ever dreamed of. Life can be frustratingly complicated and unexpectedly perverse, sometimes driving us to distraction. But whatever happens along the way, the universe propels us inexorably and uncaringly forward, toward the next surprise.

Original melody idea jotted down October 2003. Composed note-by-note in Harmony Assistant, imported into GarageBand 2 & tweaked neurotically. Mike "Kevmikwa" Watkins replaced my horribly simple drum track with his own ideas and wonderful drumming performance, helping to give this a very powerful rhythmic undercurrent of paradoxical tension, serenity and inertia. I added a little wash of effects over Mike's final drum mix to catch his set on fire. Special thanks to MikeW, Roxylee, and Ziti who endured numerous requests to review various incarnations of this piece. Ziti, thanks for the "draw out the ending low chord" idea! A newer version of this song, with the vibraphone replaced by a ZauberFlöte (magic flute) can be found here.

Hardware:
Macintosh dual 1Ghz G4, Hot Summer daze, cool Summer grapefruit.

Software:
Harmony Assistant composition software, Garageband 2, Mike's drums & Logic, conversion to MP3 by "LAME" MP3 converter.

Nice mix! &mdash 07/22/06 - 05:07:09 PM
This is a nice tune, Drak. Everything flows very well together. The
drums have good feel too. The intro had a sort of impending doom
sort of feel, but then the light melody comes in to lift it up. Your
description is what I think of when I hear this. By that, I mean this track
has a contemplative nature about it. Kind of . . .music to think to??? I'm
not sure if that makes any sense or not, so hopefully you get the idea.
I'm not sure how to put it into words right now. I listened to it a couple
of times and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it with us! Peace!

there is definitely a contrast here, like boris said, between doom and not.
it's refreshing to hear some real drums... they definitely give this a boost.

cool textures and layers... very well produced.

Really like the pretty melody meets the dark background idea.
And the drums really add a little 'something, something' (Read: "Sauzin',

Very nice work!

Another example of why we have "real" drummers about the place!
Mike has added a dimension to this which would have been impossible
to achieve with midi or loops. Relaxing, relaxed and thoughtful - very
nicely done Eduard!

The original drum track and Mike's magic are night and day... I'm glad you
noticed his creativity and skill shining through on this. I originally had a really
heavily distorted drumset on this to give it bite, but Mike took my ideas and
played them so well I didn't need to torque them much, and in fact they sounded
so good I backed way off on the effects so they mostly come through as-is, just
some flange/phasing to give a unique dizzy firey sound. Thank you for
listening, Neil!

In this enhanced melody I hear &mdash 07/22/06 - 08:55:38 PM
the mingled emotions, not clamoring, but vying for attention just under
the surface; sadness and happiness playing leapfrog. "Hear me, hear
me, hear me, hear me, they whisper in the 2.07-2.10 segment. Then
hope rises, followed by melancholy. With the opposite feelings still
mingled, the melody leaves us knowing that life will always have its
ups and downs. All we need to do is continue to rise above on the
currents of hope.

Or maybe I got all that from that pepperoni pizza

ps- real nice drums, too.:-)

oddly familiar about this one .... and then it came to me ... I think you sent me an earlier version of this once upon a lifetime ago ..... it certainly isn't one that needs vocals .. it sounds perfect as an instrumental just the way it is .... I like the nicely placed swells .... it was very relaxing to listen to while drinking my beer after 12 hours of back breaking labour working on the new place ... thanks DRAK .... Short 'n Sweet. 'n haunting. 'n a lot more... &mdash 07/23/06 - 04:20:11 AM
It has an immediately attractive and engaging quality. Triggers different
emotions; somewhat nostalgic, sad, haunting, but also up, fun, etc.!
Interesting combination! The main melodic idea has more places to go
than you take it! The fact that you don't take it to any of these other
places isn't necessarily negative at all, however, because there's
something to be said for 'short and sweet!'

Nice track.

Short 'n Sweet. 'n haunting. 'n a lot more... &mdash 07/25/06 - 05:22:16 PM
Yes, it is simple, short and sweet, with ups and downs, more could have been
done with it, just like life itself... so I guess I nailed it! I started to do some
melody-echoing, but didn't get too involved because I did sort of like the basic
melody and didn't muck with it much. I'm very happy to hear that my working
multiple emotions into the music came across... that's a tricky thing to do, it just
sort of happened as I wrote it. OK, off to write something else now! Thank you
again for your thoughts and encouragement, and BTW I'm now reading Fux and
Mann madly, and should have a fugue ready by the end of the year!

I have to tell the truth, I did not really like it, mostly because of the cheesy piano all along (mostly because of my weirdo tastes I should say). every single part in the background is really great and well produced though. I guess its just not my cup of tea but who cares! keep on keep on drako!

me... I sincerely appreciate that this was not your style, but you took the time to
comment anyway, and tell me what you did and didn't like... for that I thank you!

I would like to use a better main melody instrument... I have always wanted it to
be a female voice (I wrote this to be sung), but that is for a later version.

You guys are WAY too kind &mdash 07/23/06 - 05:31:49 PM
Really. I am so flattered by the things you guys are saying.

Drak - you aren't taking nearly enough credit for the rhythmic template
you laid down. The part that you wrote and forwarded to me may have
been simple, but it had an excellent pulse and it basically defined the
part that I played. I appreciate your kind words and would like to
reflect a bunch of them back on to you - I have kind of an unwritten
rule for collabbing with people: I have to dig the song at the outset,
and this song really qualified. Even after numerous plays as part of our
iterative process, the song still is quite moving in its simplicity and
theme. I like the final round of tweaks (and that last drawn-out chord).

To borisluxx, urbnite, Einarus, jiguma, Roxylee: my most humble
thanks for your kind reviews of the drummy bits.

Hi Rolo, thank you for the comment. My original distorted drums were really
effected... but when I heard Mike's replacement drums, I backed off a lot on the
effects because he added the stuttering gait and interesting sounds himself, and
I didn't want to mask them much. But I understand wanted to hear them totally
clean too. Glad you liked the melody, and yes, I'd love to have it sung... I'd love
to have somebody step up and replace the melody/harmony instruments with

It truly is striking how you manage to walk the expressive line between
the difficult days and the wonderful ones in this piece. Boy, there's
nothing like a real drummer, either; nice work, Kev.

This is a lovely piece of music. I wish someone would build that Day
Extender I've been dreaming of, so that I could play with vocal. I think
it would be a nice addition, though the song definitely sounds alone. I
have to compliment you on the mix, too. It's beautifully balanced.

Guten Tag, and thank you for listening and giving me your thoughts. I try to
write music that has a touch of emotion (blue-ness?), and starts a movie in the
listener's head... so I'm excited to know I did that for you! I wanted a little
distorted "bite" on the drums to make them sound slightly surreal... but Mike's
drumming was so good that I backed off the effects a lot. I did leave some in
there, but maybe I should take it out completely, and let his performance shine.

Hey cool &mdash 07/27/06 - 12:19:46 AM
So, I'm catching this a little late, I guess! Nice composition--and
excellent drumming kevmikwa, very fitting and keeps the song
propelling forward. Very interesting song art too. This has a very
psychedelic feel to me, full of contradictary gloom and cheer, and it
keeps sort of opening up as it goes, endlessly-blooming-flower style.
Actually, I think you have a talent for melodies like that, seems I've
heard it in your music before. And with that flange on the drums,
there's a melted kind of thing going on (like the song art). I hear what
datafunk is saying; the lead melody instrument (sounds like layers of
instruments?) feels a little flat timbre-wise. Some kind of richer
sound--and I'm not sure what that would be exactly--would be more
ear-tantilizing, I think. Anyway, I really enjoyed this song, and found it
to be strange in a lot of good ways.

.. optimism seems to win .. over the top of the darker under-currents ..

.. being more of a realist .. I would have liked things to get drak ..I mean
darker .. and then be somehow pulled out by the lighter melody
that dominates over the top - being a romantic too ..

but having said that - I think it's jolly good.

There are two sides... and I guess I *am* an optimist. Let's see, what is the
definition of an optimist again? Oh yes, "Things are so bad now, they can only
get better." :-) No, I'm pretty sure I'm a pessimist then. Glad you liked the
