Description:
Here is the song, "I'm Gonna Be An Overcomer" by Joel & Cilla. You guys don't know how much this song has affected me as I have worked on it. Joel wrote this song way back in 1973 in Isla Vista, CA. While single, he and I lived in the same apartment. Likewise, my wife Barb and Cilla (Joel's wife) lived together in another apartment. We all belonged to the same church. Well anyway, I suggested to Joel about... I don't know, a year ago?... that he and I record this song. Well, the opportunity never arose. Then when the dread "Mr. C" came a knockin' on Joel's door, I immediately thought of the song and the obvious additional meaning to the line "I'm gonna be an overcomer." Recording this became top priority. I am thankful that we had the chance last weekend to record both Joel's and Cilla's vocals. I am happy with the result and so are they. I can't listen to this song now without getting, well...

To my oldest and dearest friend...

God, in all his mercies and healing power, be with you Joel Schubert!

Update: Joel went in for surgery this past week and is doing well. The surgery went as hoped. His trust is truly in his Lord. And that trust is not just for a complete recovery, but even more so, that through God's grace he continue to live as God would intend... to be someone who lives a life of solid character and Godly intentions and actions toward others. It is an encouragement to talk with him.

Vocals: Joel & Cilla
Slide guitar, harmonica, bass, whistling: Jack
Drums, banjo, acoustic guitar picking: Loops

Lyrics:
I'm Gonna Be An Overcomer

CHORUS:
I'm gonna be an overcomer,
Nothing in this world can hold me back
Ever since I met my Lord Jesus
I've been travelin' on a one way track.

VERSES:
1. Sitting on the throne with my Jesus
Reigning with Him all dressed in white.
My names's written down in that great big book
Made holy by His own true light.

2. No more tears, no more sorrows,
Parting shall never more be.
Drinking from the living fountain
Hidden manna and a new name for me.

3. Eating from the tree of life,
No need to fear the second death.
I'm gonna be an overcomer,
If it takes me to my very last breath.

4. Faithful is He who has called me
To finish the work that He's begun.
And when this life is finally over,
All the glory goes to God's only Son.

All the best wishes from me to your friend Joel.

This song should give strength and help to keep focus on the main things in life - being love for all that is good. All you need is love:)

Great song and well performed. The bluegrass feeling with the banjo and harmonica suits the song, and adds to the joy of life theme in the song.

I fully appreciate this. We used to sing all manner of choruses, hymns, folk songs as a family when we were growing up, at devotional time in the every mornings, driving down the road.....

What a treat for all in this song!!!

The hard part: up until Dad passed away with the prostate "C", it was his favorite thing for us to do when we got together.... It's a hard thing to even think about. Mom and dad gave their lives in service in foreign missions in Brazil for 39 years for the faith and the Gospel they believed in. I cannot to this day understand dad's prolonged & painful death. I try to push it away so that bitterness doesn't overcome me.

Dad had a lot of favorite songs, hymns, classical music, but the one I remember him by is, "It is Well with My Soul" (when peace like a river).

OK, Too much information.

Thanks for this.

. - Harold

Harold... not too much information. Thanks for sharing part of your story and that of your Dad's. I thought I would post the lyrics to his favorite hymn, which is also one of my favorite:

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrow like sea billows roll;
What ever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well with my soul;
It is well
It is well, it is well with my soul
with my soul;

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurrance control.
That Christ has regarded my helpess estate
And has shed his own blood for my soul.

It is well with my soul;
It is well
It is well, it is well with my soul
with my soul;

My sin--O the bliss of this glorious thought!--
My sin, not in part, but the whole,

Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well with my soul;
It is well
It is well, it is well with my soul
with my soul;

O Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trumpet shall resound and the Lord shall descend;
"Even so" it is well with my soul.

It is well with my soul;
It is well
It is well, it is well with my soul
with my soul.

Great knee-slapper &mdash 07/23/06 - 04:03:15 PM
and a great message!

Joel, you belong to Jesus, so you know that to understand the suffering of
the faithful, we need to have the peace that only Jesus can supply. I've
added you to my daily prayers. Know that all will be well our brother.

May God bless you and keep you,

Rick

We know he's going to be in a better place and maybe it's not time yet. A little
mistake and clarification on my part. Great is the Lord God All Mighty and he
knows what's best. My prayers are with Joel, family and friends.

Applause! &mdash 07/23/06 - 06:21:16 PM
Jack: At first I thought this was going to be a remake of "I'm a Believer".
I was so wrong. This is better. Very fine folk-bluegrass groove. I love it!
Are you sure there's not a washboard in there?

Thanks Bill for stopping by. I was thinking of you when I was playing the
slide guitar part. I tried to give a bit of thetiler sound. I don't think I made it,
but you inspire me.
cheers...

ALMOST HEAVEN! &mdash 07/25/06 - 12:39:14 PM
When you first drive into the state of West Virginia you encounter signs
that say: "Almost Heaven." Well, I'm nearly there as I love a good
bluegrass tune---especially when they glorify our Saviour. Authentic
appalachian sound throughout. Love the mouth organ in this. Very nicely
done.

My prayers go out to Joel and Cilla!

rain and tears.... &mdash 07/25/06 - 11:23:21 PM
"Rain and tears in the sun
But in your heart
You feel the rainbow waves..."
somehow, I am reminded of this song by Aphrodite's Child...perhaps because of the genuine emotion and spirituality in both songs...great sound & composition, Dadai...best wishes to your friend...wish life was more like a fairy tale, full of sun, without the rain and tears...but life is such a personal battle...wish I had more encouraging words...the friendship and love of life that you convey in this song testify the strength in you, and I have no doubt that you will overcome the adversities....thanks for sharing something so personal and emotional....

"Thanks to all for the well wishes and prayers. I really appreciate them
all. My good friend Jack, Dadai, did a great job on the song and is
responsible for making it a fun, meaningful and memorable event for
me. To know that the song is being listened to and enjoyed by others
makes it all that much better"
