Stebbe LIVE Combo Blues

Description
I am taking a jazz workshop at Butler University here in Indianapolis. It's a "big band." After the workshop is done, we will perform at the Jazz Kitchen here in Indy.

We are doing a Basie tune which starts out with a blues pattern, and a piano solo. I thought my piano solo sounded fairly decent, so I made a recording of it with my MiniDisc deck. It's a five-foot Steinway which is pretty well in tune. Looks like the piano might be 25+ years old, but appears to be recently rebuilt.

Ain't nothing like the real thing, Baby! I just am in love with the chance to play a "real" piano that sounds and reacts the way a "real" piano should. Digital stuff is fine, but the real thing needs to happen once in awhile, just to remind myself why I like to play piano in the first place.

The voice you hear at the top is our bandleader, not me. He's the one snapping, also.

You'll also hear live drumset, live "real" upright bass, and live jazz guitar. What a blast.

The picture is me at Kids Camp, on my "staff" bunk bead. I am the music leader each summer for Kids Camp, which our church does for our kids. I play a mean campfire guitar!

What main thing I love about
Your playing is that you have the gift to make people happy. That is one
of the greatest types of musical gifts people can have.

It's happy jazz!

Hey, maybe I coined a name for your style john!

"Happy Jazz" - )

What main thing I love about
Thank you, Bill. OK, you can call my style "Happy Jazz." That's OK with me! If I
can play music which makes people feel happy, then that's a pretty great thing.
Feels good for them, and feels even better for me.

Nothing like the real thing!
It's nice to hear you play the 'real thing' Also, great to hear a recording of
all 'live' instruments. I enjoy the big band sound and the instrumentation.
I was waiting to hear the brass and winds, too, but I suppose that's
probably not something you can share here. Nice solo.

Nothing like the real thing!
Thanks so much, Kristy. Yes, I chose to end the recording where you heard the
trombones coming in, to respect the copyright. The first section (the piano solo)
is simply a blues pattern. You can't copyright the blues! But afte the solo ends,
then you hear the original material which Basie wrote, and that's where I cut off
this track.

Groovin'
Beautiful playing, John. I only wish it were longer...I love when the horns come in, but that's when it cuts out! Maybe you could publish the whole thing?

Groovin'
Thanks, Drew. I wish I could post the whole thing, too, but due to copyright, I
can't do that.

The piano solo is just my improv over a blues pattern, so I don't see any
copyright difficulty with the little bit that I did post.

The tune is called "Ticker" and you can find it at the iTMS, if you really want that
track. It's by the Count Basie Orchestra.

Very nice
Thank you, QueenRoyal. The swing is just as much due to the guitar, bass, and
drums as anything the piano player is doing. Playing with others is such a gas.

great!!!!
Hi, Neighbor! And thanks for the kind words.

Well, I'm playing again, but only as a solo this time. Tonight at the Ruth's
Chris Steak House downtown (Friday, August 4, from 7 to 11), and then
tomorrow night (Saturday, August 5) from 6:30 to 9:30 at the Adams Mark
Restaurant ("The Marker") at the airport.

I know some of the guys who play at the Keystone Grill (a gal, too), and I'm
not quite in their league yet. Maybe someday.

Sounds like you had a GREAT environment to grow up in. Your parents sound
very cool, Steve.

You understated it...
The piano solo is way better than" fairly decent". You have a real sweet
touch, which I envy, and a great ease on the keyboard, which I also envy.

Great idea to post this solo, knowing there were copyright issues to be
respected, but knowing your solo created no problem in that regard.

Wonderful facility at the piano, John.

Lovely
Another beautiful piano performance by you! I understand your reasons
for cutting out just as a trombone (?) solo begins, but I found it pretty
disturbing! I was really getting into it, then oops, it's over!

It sounds like you had a great time at the workshop!

Thank you, Clark. Yes, I had a great time! Many opportunites for piano solos

Nicely done John. A toe tapper from the git-go! I only wish it was longer.
But I guess you're showcasing your piano work here. Did I mention it's
superb?

Be well!
