Description:
I used to play bass for a singer/songwriter named Stephen Rideout. Amazing guy. He HATED one word titles. This is for him!!! ;-)

This song is about the power of words, and how the smallest thing said can make a huge difference - good or bad. The forst two guitar parts you hear are Jam pack software instrument apple loops. I has to do some midi editing to get the chord progressions right. The drums are also loops. The rest is all me. (acoustic, bass, piano, vocals)

I wrote this one morning in the shower at 6am. It was one of those that came to me just about finished. That doesn't happen often.

Enjoy.

Mike T.

Lyrics:
Words

If you could see the expression on your face, would you take those words away?
If you could see the damage words can do, would you say the things you say?

If you could save the world with just one word, would you curse or would you pray?
If you could heal the wounds that words inflict, could you wipe the tears away?

Would you take it back?
Could you take it back?
Would you take back those words you said?
Would you take it back?
Could you take it back?
Would you take back those words you said?

Sticks and stones can break your bones but words can break your heart.
Bones will mend in time but words can leave a deeper scar.

If you could see the expression on your face, would you take those words away?
If you could heal the wounds that words inflict, could you wipe the tears away?

Would you take it back?
Could you take it back?
Would you take back those words you said?
Would you take it back?
Could you take it back?
Would you take back those words you said?

Moody and somber... a little sad... perfect atmosphere for the subject..
I love how the undercurrent in this song points to the hurt... all the way
to the solo at the end... the melincholy of being the target of
someone... the song really works and the lyric is very good

Thanks Scott,
This one stuck with me. I grew up as a geek pretty much (before geeks were cool!) and went through hell in high school and university. Now as a teacher I see how high school is still a really cruel place. I tried to keep the lyrics vague enough so that it could apply to the street, the home, to the office, to global conflict. Humans still treat each other like sh&$ and it all starts with the decision to say one word.

Thanks,
I had the lyrics and progression for about 2 years before getting to record it. It was done in my head. I stumbled upon those 2 first guitar parts in Jam Pack 3 and they fit perfectly. It changed my whole perception of how the song would sound. I'm happy with how it came out.

Nicely done Mike. Lyrics are universal - I have just finished working as
a school counsellor (for a very long while), and I really know what
you're talking about. Trouble is that kids/people/countries don't
understand lots of the time that words are so powerful. Like the way
you've used loops - probably the most effective use in this sort of song
that I can remember at MJ. Good all round post.

Thanks, I get you're perspective. I'm a middle/high school music teacher, that's the perspective this tune first came from.
... and thanks fot the loops comments. I love having them at my fingertips! I work alone so it's like having all these great musicians to colaborate with! I picked up all the jam packs...

Great song writing. I liked your singing, the hook induced chorus, and
the well produced background tracks. Awesome job incorporating the
loops. The whole thing is very pro sounding. Was Stephen Rideout a
solo artist or was he part of a group. Sounds familiar

Thanks for the kind comments! Stephen is/was a solo artist. You can check out his site at www.stephenrideout.com. I learned a lot about songwiting from playing with him and had the opportunity to write basslines for some great well crafted songs.

Like how you put an importance on words on this song.
Makes for an understanding on how important words are.

Nice music in there as well.

Thanks for sharing

Hey &mdash 08/18/06 - 06:00:34 PM
Nice to not only hear the great song, but to find a fellow band teacher on
the site (a fellow canuckian as well). Oh, and you're a low brass player
(me:trombone) and bassist. Gosh. You even enjoy writing and recording
with a mac. We've a fair bit in common!

Anyways, I am gonna check out your other stuff. The recording is great
on this track, btw.

Do we hear any tuba on your other tracks?

Wow! And not only that. my wife is an Elementary School Music Teacher/Piano Player/ Singer!!! We do have a lot in common. I'm goin to check out your stuff too. Look forward to coresponding with you!.

Thanks for the kind words!

ps... Are you anywhere near Macklin Sask? Did a school band exchange there once!

Hey &mdash 08/20/06 - 12:53:08 AM
Not terribly close to Macklin, about 3 hours south. Mind you, for Saskatchewan,
that is pretty close.

And again, the similarities are eerie. If "That's Incredible" was still on air they
may just have come out to do a story here.

Looking forward to your correspondance!

Jim

I appreciate the comments on the bass playing. Bass is my main instrument but I feel really rusty after taking a few years off playing with an arm injury. The compliments meant a lot!

Semantics... &mdash 03/31/07 - 10:41:33 PM
...words...phrases.
Some Chinese cultures would write what they wanted to say, when it was important. Then take the completed letter to the recipient and read it, word for word, in order to make sure that it was understood the way it was supposed to be.
Some kinda tune, trembmic. My first listen. Very nicely done. Lyrics/performance/arrangement.

Thank you too! &mdash 04/14/07 - 07:21:16 PM
Man thanks,
It's the tune that I'm most proud of... I have my own childhood baggage, and what I see in high schools every day makes me sick. Let's not even mention what most of the role models are loke out there today. Thanks for the kind words.

Confessions... &mdash 04/14/07 - 07:25:19 PM
Thanks for the comments...

I have to confess though the lead guitar parts are apple loops. I found 2 sets of loops that blended so well. I can't play electric like that. (I wish). I did really play with the midi parts to taylor the rhythms and chord progressions to match the tune I'd written. I was really happy with the results. THe fade out is my favorite part too!
I did play the acoustic, piano and bass though....

Thanks Man!!

This is quite the song you have here Mike. Professional sounding with a great hook and a worthy message.

And those leads were loops?!? Man, if people start using them as skillfully as you have here than there isn't going to be much work for us guitarists!

Well done.
