Description
This song was written and recorded on yet another sleepless night over a period of about three hours. I consider it a rough draft which I probably won't refine, at least for a while.

It's a little unusual for me because it's only accoustic guitar and vocals.

The story behind it, in a broad sense, is about small towns losing their history when people stop caring. What spurred it was the announcement last week that one of our historic buildings, the TWL building in the left hand side of the photo above, had been sold and was going to be torn down and the bricks used to build houses in a near-by city for people with way more money than sense. This is one of the oldest buildings in our small town and has a rich, long history, but very few people, especially the younger generations (like myself) seem to care.

As a side note, the photo above was taken almost 30 years ago and the bank building in the far right background has also been demolished and replaced with a very boring modern looking building.

Lyrics
Brick by Brick

Just an empty lot
On the corner by the park
it’s all gone
but the memories

There was laughter here
There were times of pain and joy
But now they’ve gone
and taken it away

Brick by brick
the past slowly fades away
Brick by Brick
until only memories remain
Brick by Brick
we tear our future down

and we lose ourselves slowly
brick by brick

Faded photographs
In a yellowed family album
Show us these four walls
all those years ago

Try to remember when
We tried to teach the meaning
Of those things we kept
from all our yesterdays

Brick by brick
the past slowly fades away
Brick by Brick
until only memories remain
Brick by Brick
we tear our future down

and we lose ourselves slowly
brick by brick
And when the time has come
where people don’t remember
and history is a coversation piece

We’ll wonder what was lost
to hand down to our children
but we sold our past slowly
Brick by Brick

Brick by brick
the past slowly fades away
Brick by Brick
until only memories remain
Brick by Brick
we tear our future down

and we lose ourselves slowly
brick by brick

Just an empty lot
On the corner by the park
Is all that’s left, save the memory

Really enjoyed this one JG.
Both as a tune and for the sentiment.

The Brick by Brick line worked metaphorically on several levels for me.

Thanks SD. I realized after listening to the "finished" product a few times, it kind
of worked on more levels for me as well. I write it about the building, but I think
it works on a broader base asl well. Glad you liked it. Appreciate you stopping
by.
