Keywords:
sometimes (9)amble (4)grapefruit (5)mosquito (1)roxylee (29)drakonis (56)
Description:
Roxylee: As soon as I heard Eduard's Grapefruit song, it got stuck in my head and stayed for days. I'd go grocery shopping and I'd start singing it in the produce aisle. I had to turn it off, but how?? So I started thinking of a different opening line and the mosquito song came into being. I figure you all can relate to this.

Lyrics:
There’s a mosquito in my bedroom
It keeps whining next to my ear
When I jump up, turn the light on
It goes melting into the woodwork

(C’mon out- I am waiting for you)

I’ve got the covers up to my chin
Even though it’s 90 in here
My fly swatter and the bug spray
Are no match for this mosquito-- oh, no

And if I sleep now… it will get me
It is waiting in the darkness- like a vampire
So I lie here, straining my ears
When it comes back, I will squish it, squish it, squish it….

Oh- I think I got it!
I don’t hear it anymore!
Oh, good, I can sleep now
Finally, no more mosquito…
Ahhhh, sweet dreams…

Let me rephrase, the song works ... Roxylee has a beautiful voice (such
nice tremolo), but the grapefruit song is burned into my brain. Not that I
haven't had a night like the one described! Thanks for posting this one,
guys - sweet collab.

Hey &mdash 08/13/06 - 06:43:31 PM
Your computer's voice just keeps improving! Rilly though, Roxylee's
singing sounds great, might be mixed a little loud. What a strange
song, but it is something we can all relate to. Now I'm confusing
grapefruits with mosquitos.

Oh, the last nights i was also pained by this little monsters.
This i a nice collab. The nice voice of Roxylee to this wonderfull
Drakonissound.
Only the Mosquitosound makes me a bit nervous.
Well done you both.

I still keep hearing the Grapefruit version, but it was fun to to make up
the Mosquito song.Thank you for you for listening and for your fun to

I came here hoping for the antidote. Instead, I now have the G-Song
playing endlessly in one ear and this tune in the other ear. You just can't
trust some people!

Be well!

LOL! i've been there! done that. hate those things...

love the stereo effects. and that mosquito sound.

but there's a strange kind of symbolism behind it. (but i'm paranoid, so
ignore this comment.)

the ending is perfectly open-ended...

between the lines? &mdash 09/10/06 - 11:29:26 PM
Alternate meanings? Double entendres? I think Roxylee is almost as
good at those as I am... so you may well be hearing echoes of other
meanings buzzing in your ear, but only Roxylee knows what she was
thinking.

Very interesting question... &mdash 09/12/06 - 08:52:13 AM
Now I'm trying to analyze my motives-and I thought it was just about a
mosquito. Hmmmm... Hey, it just might have other, subconscious
meanings. All summer my sleep has been interrupted by kids, cats,
music, cars in the driveway at 4 AM, crickets, tree frogs, neighbors
dogs, the noisy (whining) refrigerator motor, the crooked fan blades
that produce that extra sound, etc.etc. I could delve deeper into this,
but it's too scary. LOL

Something in the way it moves ... &mdash 09/12/06 - 01:17:45 PM
Somebody pass me the can of Deep Woods Off bug spray : >

These last four pieces make for an interesting comparison of melodic development. It's amazing how small changes effect the outcome. Switch the piano to a flute and the mood shifts appreciably (I read the first "Sometimes" with more ambivalence - a playful presentation against a somber overtone, whereas the flute seem more in sync with the synth).

The "Grapefruit" song was fun because it was silly - mostly because of the style and content of the words, yet that seemed to convert the melody itself into something lighter, positive and crisper (or maybe I should suggest the words are like pouring milk over Rice Krispies and getting the cereal to sing snap, crackle and pop?").

But of the four, I find myself more drawn to the Mosquito Song, for a couple of reasons. Perhaps it is the story line which is easy to follow and easy to embrace (anybody that has lived with mosquitoes recognizes the anxiety and stupidity of the situation ... which I assume is most of the human race). The ominous opening now becomes foreshadowing. Your light touch and love of humor is handled deftly through out the song. Like the moment of hiding under a quilt when the temp is 90-degrees, or the wishful-thinking moment when the little bugger disappears and one hopes that last swat may have connected - only to, of course, soon learn otherwise.

That final so-familiar buzzing sound is pitched so perfectly that the first time I heard it, it raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

Everything seems to be working in this piece - the music, the clever mix of singing and talking to relate the futility of trying to sleep with a mosquito in the bedroom, the sound effects, the levels and pannings of the mix - that you've really put together a winning combination with this version.

postscript &mdash 09/13/06 - 08:22:32 AM
As an odd coincidence, I thought of your mosquito song this morning when I woke from a night of sleep. There was a buzzing sound. At first I couldn't place it - and I conjectured there was a mosquito in the room. Then I realized it was coming from outside the window. In New York City we are plagued with large mosquitoes called news helicopters. Two of these urban insects were hovering nearby, probably shooting an accident for the morning commute report or covering a fire. Nonetheless, at that moment your mosquito song popped into my mind.

Delightful Depth of commentary &mdash 09/13/06 - 10:21:23 AM
Thank you Warren for your detailed thoughts on these 4 incarnations of this
piece, which began its life with the working title "Unterwafter", then "Amble",
then briefly became the Grapefruit song before being shelved for a couple of
years to get that tart citrus taste out of my mouth.

I too liked the flute better, but I had originally written it for a sung vocal
part... and Roxylee came closer to what I was envisioning... and although I
see this as a more serious piece (eventually), her humorous spin on it
impressed me greatly. You may want to listen to some of her other pieces,
she's quite talented, I think... and a fellow New Yorker!

Anyway, thank you again for your comments/thoughts, they are wonderfully
insightful! I hope you are not often plagued by the giant NYPDophilus
mosquitos, they sound really annoying!

Drakonis

Sorry bout that, Warren. This version was fun to write and sing.
When I heard the seriousness of the melody, I just had to make
something silly out of it. But it still had to be somewhat serious, hence
the mosquito sleep deprivation. Heyyyyyy.... Instead of making the
detainees listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers for torture, they can
listen to the mosquito song!! LOL Seriously, though, thank you for such
nice comments. i'm glad you liked it, even though it is now giving you
nightmares.

Now who hasn't had that experience - A clever and witty little funny - I
don't know the whys or the hows that made this the bit of perfection
that it is, (really) but this was very well done - Nice job Roxylee - Very
well done - You too Drak - This is so you - And I really needed
something light and more toward that which was meant for the
pureness of entertainment - That was quite timely - Thanks Sir -
Always - Dion

P.S. It's a good thing that I don't visit you w/ some silly expectation of
what venue you might be catering to - Always a surprise and it's always
something interesting and very well done - Thanks for that - Me, again

Yes, it is supposed to "get under your skin"... or at least the music was supposed
to, but Roxylee is credited with writing these lyrics and singing over it... and she
went even deeper. She'd be glad you were disturbed, I bet! :-)

I think Roxylee did a great job coming up with inventive lyrics for this music,
that everyone can relate to. Of course, when *I* listen to this song, it makes me
itchy for grapefruit, but that's a different song/story. :-)

Once, I stayed &mdash 10/20/06 - 03:31:36 PM
at a cheap motel in Arkansas close to Memphis.... There were rice flats and catfish farms all around...
We were going to go swimming, but we checked in the room and what we thought initially was wallpaper actually were the red remains of hundreds of squished mosquitos. Ugh..... We didn't go swimming, because of the black clouds of the critters awaiting. I saw on a commercial that if you eat enough Tabasco sauce.....PooF!

Ugh, (shudder)... your story sounds like it could be made into a Stephen King
novel... "and at night, I would awaken in the musty hotel room and stare at the
walls. I could hear faint scritching noises, which sounded like they were coming
from the next room, almost sounded like high-pitched whispers. It may have
just been the unearthly glint of the flickering neon vacancy sign outside,
stabbing its way through the drawn curtains... but I could swear that the strange
little specks all over the wallpaper were beginning to move. They flowed and
began to congeal into terrible shapes in my mind."

I've had a night like that. I was a kid. Worst night I ever had. I thought that the one that was in the bedroom with me must've been swelled up like a cherry. I had a least a dozen bites by morning. I found the ugly sucker and I squished the snot out of it. Loved the smack of the swatter and the way you sang this. Terrific, Roxy!
Thanks.

Thank you, Char &mdash 10/15/08 - 10:14:00 AM
I think we can all relate to these little nuisances in our bedrooms. we hunt for it, but as soon as the light goes in, it hides. we know as soon as we're half asleep, it will come out to feast on us. We can trick flies out of our room by turning on a light in the next room, but mosquitos are too smart to fall for that. So these lyrics came out of years of pent up mosquito frustration. They fit the wonderful, slightly sinister sound bed that Eduard already smirked up with the Grapefruit Song, so it was fair game. I'm glad you got a kick (not a bite) out of it. :-)
