Description:
This improvisation was made in April and I found it today. (It is strange how fast I forget ... is that aging maybe? (Ejh help!) ... I don't remember ever having played this one).
Often a new sound on the guitar inspires to new playing. A fat sound like this inspires fat playing.
In improvisations like this I don't plan anything ahead. In this tune for exemple, after a tentative inquiring intro, suddenly a theme idea appears. Such an idea pops up one to half a second before it comes out. In that way many ideas appears as a need from what has been before. If it has been dry for a while, something wet comes etc. That's why I feel improvisations can be so interesting.
Then it is of course good luck and a nice surprize for me afterwards, if a theme stays and follow quite consistently through the improvitation like this. (Not all improvisations result in anything I would ever want to post).
This tune also exists as a very nice collab version with Karmatoburm here
Hardware:
• Guitar: A Yamaha APX-6NA with strings by John Pearse.
• Preamp: A Yamaha AG-Stomp
• G4
Software:
• Logic Express

..or lose it, eh? &mdash 08/16/06 - 01:01:13 PM
I love the tone you're getting on the guitar, Johannes, and I love the tune;
the fact that it's improvised just makes it that much more exciting to me.
The combination of the Yamaha with the AG-Stomp seems like a good
one.
This has much of what I hoped I come across when I joined MacJams.
Different people come to the site for different sorts of music. This would
be heart of my musical home ground, and you do it as well as I've ever
heard it done.

Thank you Ed, I am so happy that you like it. Yes as we have discovered we seem
to have a lot common ground. Finding a someone that shouts "ah, Danny
Kirwan!" as soon as "Sands of Time" is menttioned, that must mean something...
But what about my memory? Should I see a shrink?

This is confident, joyous, and multi-faceted music. Your playing is
self-assured, and sounds like you're having a blast (great time) making
things up as you go. It sounds composed, which is pretty amazing for
an improvisation.
There are little mood changes every now and then that really, REALLY
work well, and always keep my interest. A little dissonance on
occasion is just marvelous! I think it'll be a bit of a challenge to add
collaborative tracks to this that don't get in the way of the free,
improvisatory feeling, but I think it would be well worth a shot. Heck,
I'd give it a shot myself it I weren't constantly pressured by deadlines!
This is top notch work, Johannes.

Wow, thanks a lot Clark! I take that seriously, since it comes from a pro (and one
whose music I feel is top notch itself)...

I also have been really busy, but not too busy to download this. Maybe I
will use it for something, but it may be just for pure enjoyment. Really

Improvisimo delight... &mdash 08/16/06 - 09:47:43 PM
Curry, you can come and play at my garden party any time you like.
The sound you generate from your guitar is beautiful. And the song
you weave in your moment of improv is a sheer delight. Some people
deserve sunshine... you are one of them. I am glad you came across
this in your archives and decided to post it. [ Reply to This ]

Incredible sound &mdash 08/16/06 - 10:10:46 PM
You don't come back very quietly do you Curry!!! Listening as I write:
beautiful, full resonant sound on the guitar - the upbeat theme comes
in so cleanly (no need for a rhythm section here!). Raga-like feel lifts
again - very reminiscent of Steven Stills on "Love the One You're With".
This is possibly my favourite Curry tune yet - possibly because of
being deprived for such a long while - it has such a dynamic
personality. Would love to see you do this live. Ending is perfect.
I mistakenly thought I could add to The Purple before - I'd love to have
a crack at some bass and drums in the up parts, but fear it wouldn't
add anything that you haven't already provided.
Now, about the memory . . . . . . . what was the question?
Thanks,
Neil [ Reply to This ]

Ah, Well Steven Stills is one great idol of the past (that I am trying to get past).
Thank you for a wonderful comment Neil!

Playing as excellently as you do, then making it up as you go along,
just amazes me. Gee, if I run out and buy me some JP strings, will I be
able to do this? Seriously, Curry, this is great. Faved and
downloaded. [ Reply to This ]

hey Curry... I'm finding I don't have time now too, so I understand... I
love how you find your way around in this...and where it ends up... I
get a sense that when you sit with your guitar you uncover gems in a
random stream of consciousness kind of way... I really dig the
experiments with the dissonance in the middle... you are a premium
player my friend.... enjoying your stuff, and always an open door here [ Reply to This ]

Oooh, Nice Sound! &mdash 08/20/06 - 11:04:16 PM
Interesting effects on this tune. Sounds like some medium-speed flange or chorus with reverb.
Cool arrangement, too. I love a good melodic 'hook' in a tune. You jump right into it after the dreamy, bass D pedal tone-anchored intro. I am referring to the high D to C and A minor chords that lead down to the G, C and D chords. Nicely done.
Cool, juicy, heartfelt improv playing, too.
Terrific acoustic guitar jam.
Scorp:)
P.S. I haven't posted anything in quite a while, so I think I lead in this category. So, don't feel too bad. [ Reply to This ]
Oooh, Nice Sound! &mdash 08/23/06 - 04:07:56 PM
Thanks a lot Scorp! Feels better ;-)
The effects on the AG Stomp are a chorus and a hall reverb.
Then the AG Stomp is set to emulate the sound of a steel stringed acoustic
guitar recorded with a dynamic microphone ... and that adds to this too. Plus
this is a nylon stringed guitar with John Pearse strings ...
