Description:
The third and final mix of this song can be heard via the homepage link on my artist page or via this:
http://macidol.com/jamroom/bands/847/music.php

This is a song I wrote and began recording about a month ago. The lyrics grew out of the heartache that is coming out of the recent war situation in the Middle East. It is neither pro-this group or anti-that group. I just got to thinking how much man keeps on messing up... again and again.
Much thanks to Craig and Neil for their help on this.

Song artwork: Massacre of the Innocents by Giudo Reni 1611

Lead vocals, backup vocals, harmonica, rhythm acoustic guitar: Jack Miller (Dadai)
Lead acoustic guitar, backup vocals: Craig Bakay (snowdragon)
Bass: Neil Porter (jiguma)
Drum loops supplied by Neil.

it's obvious &mdash 08/19/06 - 05:17:11 PM
...that you've been listening pretty much to Mr. Robert Allen Zimmerman:)

This is a really great song Jack. And what a great collab. That confident bass from down under keeps the things going on together as one piece. Very good lyrics. It's what Bob could have done (on a good day;)...

The harp, the drums, the bass, the guitars and the vox... WOW - Very good.
There is one thing I have to ask about... and that is about one guitar (panned to the right) is slightly out of time.... Is that meant to be.. or a little accident?

I would suggest to fix that, and I say you have a winner!

Hey, thanks very much for stopping in thoddi. Mister Zimmerman is rolling
his eyes about now... but I do thank you for the compliment. The guitar right
is as it is... sort of a live performance after many nights on the road kind of
thing. So enjoy it as it is recorded.
If I ever get into a recording studio... then I'll hire a new vocalist and insist on
perfection all around, until then... it's simply... as it is. : )

Nice... &mdash 08/19/06 - 05:20:19 PM
This seems to fall somewhere between the Grateful Dead and Arlo
Guthrie. I like it. Timeless message. Fine arrangement. Nice vocal stylings
Jack. Harmonica yields a Dylan-esque feel which is appropos for a piece
like this. The production is raw but just right to my ears.

Be well!

Some say I only do raw productions... : ) I must be in good company... Arlo,
the Dead, Zimmie. It could be worse. Thanks Mike.

think of a picture in the paper with all the mothers holding up signs of
their dead children all dressed in black religiou garb. Like that backround
sigh singin cool, nice lead vocal. Cool neil young type harmonica and the
list goes on.

Thanks T for stopping in. Yeah... a lot of sadness over the centuries. Time
presses on. Man keeps screwing up and, yet, all the while promising this
time it is different. This time will bring peace. And the the world keeps
turning, the children keep playing, and mother's keep praying. And man, in
and of himself, doesn't seem to have the answers. Tough to consider.
Where to turn...

Once again, it was a pleasure to ber able to collab with some other MJers like
Craig and Neil, both accomplished musicians and great guys.
cheers...

YEAH, YEAH, YEAH &mdash 08/19/06 - 08:50:23 PM
If they called Mick a Beetle, everytime he sang the word "Yeah"; I guess
he'd be a Beetle, No?

WELL, Arlo, Bob, Jerry, Frank, Neil (Young), I guess no one ever HEARD
a song with a Harmonica on it before Dylan - Funny, Ain't It?

This is a Great song. A Sad Song, but Really VERY Well Done Piece of
Music. Doesn't remind me of ANYONE, except those "INNOCENTS" and
our unwilling and unwitting Complicity ( if it were ONLY That!).

Well stated and written. I won't tire of this one, anytome Soon.

Really nice collection of Talent-Superbly "captured", as it were.

Neil - are you Sure those are Loops? C'Mon, Now, Man.

Very Best Regards,
Cooper

Yeah, yeah, yeah... you say it well. But do I really sound like Frank? (who?)
LOL

Working with snow and Neil is all on the positive side for me. They both have
so much more that they bring to a song then I do. When working with guys
like them, I found myself reaching a little higher... and having fun while doing
it.

So glad you like this one. And I love your unique style of written
communication. You say it well.

So true... &mdash 08/19/06 - 09:19:01 PM
Kids keep playing and moms keep praying in the midst of the rockets
that keep on falling, while the politicos are saying "Peace and safety."
Very good song all around, and the harmonica makes it special. Kudos
to all you guys! :-)

Thanks for "getting it." The refrain is my lament about what we call history,
the latest chapter being played out in the Middle East. It is a tough situation
and I am not without a strong opinion on the matter. But standing back from
it all and looking on... it seems all too familiar and endless. There is a hope,
but that is not what this song is about.

Thanks for listening and leaving your thoughts, Roxy.

Brushed up OK Jack! &mdash 08/20/06 - 02:25:56 AM
Brushed up OK Jack! Like what you've done with the harmonies, and
imho the whole thing moves along rather well. It's funny that despite
listening to this quite a few times when doing my bits, I hadn't really
listened well to the words - they are very appropriate at this time, and
throw a more positive light than I can manage.
Good song and a very nice mix - well done!
For the record, I'm using my '71 Fender Precision bass and Drums on
Demand loops.

Yeah, it turned out pretty decent and I am happy with the finished product. I especially want to thank you again for the solid bass line and drum loops that totally anchor this song. Your keeping it simple was just the ticket.
Re: the lyrics. A lot of times I don't feel positive. I didn't really feel that way when writing these words. But the fact that man always seems to be looking for, even expecting "hope just around the corner"... well, maybe there is a hope out there. I believe there is.
Thanks again.

I've said it before . . . &mdash 08/20/06 - 08:15:40 AM
and I'll say it again: Jack, Neil, I'll play with you guys anytime,
anywhere.

I liked this tune right from the git-go, when Jack sent me a "rough"
.mp3. Sure it ain't the monster track or nothin' but it was a helluva lot
of fun and I suspect this won't be the last version of it. :) (I know I ain't
done with it.)

And many thanks to those who like the "raw" approach. Amagi, it
sounds right to my ears too. Not knocking precise, polished recordings
you understand but Stones, Dead, Dylan, Young . . . man, that's what I
plug in the box 90 per cent of the time. Lay the back-beat down and
let 'er fly . . . OW! OW! OW!

Oh, the guitar I used on this is an '85 Fender Newporter with an Apex
condenser aimed slightly forward of the sound hole and a Shure
Unisphere 11 aimed at the saddle (not that anyone would want to
reproduce this sound :)

oh...it's keep running FOR my life. I've been running FROM my life. No
wonder what's new is really old. I love the overall feel on this. I like the
loose 'live' vibe you were going for. it's just that akustik in the right
channel, more in the first third of the song, rocked a little too hard in the
'live' vibe department. and just for the record, hope is exactly one day
away. it's always never not a day away.

I like this song so much that I played it at Old Man River Cafe on
August 12. 2006. It was well accepted by the small crowd. How
important re the lyrics? So important that I actually recited them before
starting to sing the song.

This song is very accessible. Simple chords (for amateurs like me) and
an inviting hook. You men did a great job. I like the harmonies. Like a
salve for open wounds that won't heal.

What is the matter with the human species? Why does strife persist?
Are we heartless idiots? We are like poet-predators who pen beauty
with one hand and strike down brothers with the other.

Yes... and yet still something in each of us that harkens back to the
beginning. Damaged goods all, yet each a worthwhile individual.

I wish you had recorded that performance. Would love to hear it.
Thanks mate.

Yes it's so sad. And you make justice to the sadness of it with this.

Someone mentioned Dylan. I would make an association between the two
of you in a very indrirect way: Bob isn't a very skilled singer but I love to
hear him sing (the early stufff).

Same with you. I can listen to your voice and your songs again and again
and again, and I just like it better and better and better ...

Couldn't have picked a better bunch to collab with. This has that
Traveling Wilburys sound to it. Such a serious subject... nice way to keep
it subtle. Sounds like you guys got together in the same studio and put
this together. Nice job...Thanks for sharing.

Hey John... I can't think of a group I'd rather sound like. The Traveling
Wilburys, a great bunch of artists coming together to make some songs and
have some fun. We're not worthy, but will take the nod. Thanks.

Yeah, a very serious topic. I tend to not want to jump on an issue with both
feet. So, this is in keeping with my attempt to creep up on something and
hopefully offer a prespective worth thinking about... maybe generating a few
questions.
cheers and thanks again.

Maybe you should start to square off with both feet planted firmly on the

Nice lyrics, great instrumentation, like the harmonica & harmonies. I did
have a problem when the music first started, it sounded like various
instruments were slightly out of tune with each other, but as the singing
and layers rolled in, it was less noticeable. I also thought the fade-out
was a little too fast, if you have to do a fade. But overall, this sounds like
a great new "old classic" folk tune... really nicely written!
