Cool doubling &mdash 08/22/06 - 08:54:57 AM
Love the vocal doubling. The percussion is maybe a little too forward for
my ears, even if you are the percussion guy. Is that you singing? Please
tell us more about your process... Fine clarity and smooth feel.

Welcome to MJ!! &mdash 08/22/06 - 04:24:23 PM
Great tune - love the solo instrument/vox/synth - this has such a nice
groove to it. Simple, tight and easy to take. Like Tobin, would love to
know more about the processes you use in recording a piece like this.
Thanks for the post,
Neil

Welcome to MJ!! &mdash 08/23/06 - 10:07:45 AM
Thanks! The process on this one was a doosey! I was going to Europe as part
of a rock tour and the artist suggested that I sell my cd's. Well, I didn't have
any cd's to sell! So, I decided to make a GO of it. Within ONE week, I recorded
10 tracks - vocals (Heather Brooks - a fellow MJer, and Kelly Fagan), live
drums (on most cuts), live bass, live percussion, mixed, mastered,
sent for duplication... and the day before we left - The order arrived!
Needless to say, not many bites on a chill / lounge / bossa release when
you're on tour with members of AC/DC! I sold a few, but sold out of them
after I got back to the states. Everything was recorded 44.1/16 bit on my
older mac G4/800. Cubase 5 / OS9 with MOTU 828.

The vocal on this track was a vocal sample from the cd-rom Vocal Planet -
World. I doubled the melody on synth. Sort of an old GRP Dave Valentine /
Dave Grusin idea. Check
out GRP Live
In Session
... it is all but unbelievable how cool and great these
musicians are!

The drums are the Yamaha RY-30. At this point in my studio, I had already
gone to virtual instruments but with my massive drum machine collection - I
wanted to utilize that... so, I chose the RY-30. What a great drum machine! I
wanted fat and I mean FAT snares, Tight KICKS and a syncopated rhythm. The
RY-30 let me do this so easily. The bass is a sample of an upright. Hopefully,
it doesn't get TOO monotonous.

As for the percussion being too loud... I respect the comments but, I've heard
the cd in so many venues - music stores, restaurants, bars, lounges, clubs
and the mix works for me. Maybe because when the drum come in - they are
so HOT? Maybe because my good friend Mike Rogers (TMRSoul on MJ) said it
best... just commit to a mix and move on! You can't write your NEXT big thing
if you
are lingering on the Last thing! Keep writing! - Well respected my friend!

Nikki Beach &mdash 08/23/06 - 10:45:52 AM
Wow man, everytime I hear this one I think of Miami Beach and that
killer chill out place we went to with the beds outside, Nikki Beach I
think it was called. So cool and chill, great choice of stand up bass to
carry the low end. This is such an exotic and intoxicatingly cinematic
track, it's got vibes for days. Great job once again.

You can never go wrong with a Brazilian Vibe. Good stuff... We may do
that record together after all...

I thought we were stylistically similar as well. We may be onto to
something. Something to consider for sure.
