Description:
One of our absolute favourite places in the world is the small Greek island of Symi. We wrote this song in its honour and hope it captures the peace and blissful tranquility of this very special place.
The vocal harmony is beautifully done by Pamela Halpin.

Lyrics:
The Harbour At Symi

Sail in the morning
On the warm sea
Out of the harbour
Come sail with me
Come sail with me in the morning on the warm sea
Out of the harbour
Symi

Swim in the water
Come swim with me
Mansion houses
Overlooking the sea
Come swim with me in the warm Aegean Sea
In the harbour
Symi

Building boats, sailing the sea
Calling me home, calling to me
Symi

The sun like honey
Golden over me
Turns to amber
On a still blue sea
Sun like honey, turning to amber on the sea
In the harbour
Symi

Building boats, sailing the sea
Calling me home, calling to me
Symi

Stars like windows
In a mansion house
The water still
In the harbour mouth
Windows like stars in the still dark sea
In the harbour
Symi

Love the last verse. Such a perfect sound you create. The song could have
been better with stronger lyrics throughout. Reminds me of a poem
fragment by Yehuda Amichai, my favorite poet, "To live is to build a ship
and a harbor at the same time. And to finish the harbor long after the
ship has gone down." The song stays in the same place, under the same
sky, which is your intent. I love the duet. Perfectly crafted performances
really well captured.

Hi Tobin
thank you for your comments, the lyrics in this song are intentionally simple and naive in order to counter the poem that accompanies it on the CD. The poem is by Bob Shields and is quite complex taking images from Greek mythology to give the whole piece some context. I think the poem you quote would sit just as well with the song, it seems we think alike.

By the way I really admire your own music, you create layers and textures that convey emotion as well as musical intricacy, not an easy thing to do!

you definitely captured the tanquility you were after. very calming and
serene. the guitar part almost seemed to illustrate the sun reflecting off
the water to me. nice feel on this!

Outstanding &mdash 08/24/06 - 09:09:08 AM
Nice job, Tom. You're right about the background vocalist - she's right
on the money with her timing and sensitivity in supporting the vocals. I
would love to hear this done up like Rick Rubin did for Johnny Cash's
American recordings: simple and brutally honest. Outstanding effort.

Wow! &mdash 08/24/06 - 03:54:08 PM
Excellent songwriting and singing. I love the harmonizing herein. My one
and only nit is that the bass is a tad "boomy." Apart from that---this is a
masterpiece Tom.

Be well!
