Wasn't sure at first..
...but then those strings arrived. When the key changed I was all smiles.
Nice one old chap!

Catchy
I like the way you positioned the sound in this mix. The only problem I'm
having is some cracking popping going on... Maybe it's just the mp3...
hopefully it's not these sennheiser headphones I just got. Nice going on
the composition... thanks for sharing.

re: Wasn't sure at first..
(oddly, the comment form is "offline") so i'll inline my reply

thanks for the positive feedback. i did think a lot about exactly how to
bring in the elements, deciding to bring in the strings late. the
modulation just happened. it *had* to be there, where it is. i also played
with the second modulation, i tried first to step up again, but that was too
much, too soon. but modulating back down was just right: this song is
about luv - the "almost love" variety... stepping back was just what i
wanted.

thanks for noticing precisely the things i spent some time on!

re: Catchy
thanks John!

i actually added some old vinyl LP crackling on purpose... it was to add a
nostalgia mood to it. like playing an old record. maybe i overdid that?

Very nice...
extended lead-in, and then---WOW!!! The strings and the soon-to-follow
change up. Well done man! I can almost hear someone singing over this
one...

Be well!

re: Very nice...
hi! i guess it worked for you. i was concerned that the lead in might be
too long.

That was great - I think
but I kept listening to that LP noise. I spent more time wondering if my
Altec Lansing were broke than anything else, so, for me, I guess you did
overdo that part! But I would really like to hear this in a "cleaned" version.
Any chance of getting that in the future?

that noise
oh my.

first of all, no offense taken.

i suppose i could put up another version with that vinyl fx track muted, but it
wouldn't be the same song. i will need to think about it.

my view is that our "world" is a noisy place.

i just quoted "world" because it's not just the physical world out there that is
noisy: our mental imagery is noisy as well in a more abstract way. the noise
isn't just old scratchy records, it's the distortion introduced by everything in
the dataflow between reality and our perception.

i believe that our brains recognize and recall our perceptions including the
channel noise, so using noise is a powerful way to evoke memories.

modern tech is wonderful in that we can eliminate most of what most of us
would consider noise, but i here i'm taking a step back into that dataflow, and
using tech to re-introduce a certain kind of noise for a specific purpose.

think of it as sepia-tone in photography?

but, maybe all this is nonsense.

I am sorry but
that noise really has to go! I can't see what is retro about this song?! We
use digital equipment nowadays (just) to get rid of that sound! If you
really want to use it you should try it in the beginning and end of a pop
song 60's style, not on a beautiful piece like this. Actually, I am quite mad
I can't enjoy this music in peace - now it just gives me the ulcer...

No offence I hope, because behind that noise it really seems to rock!!!

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]
