Recently Matt and I posted a request for remixes of our song, Saturnine in the Macjams forums. To our delight, seven of our fellow MJ-ers took the files and agreed to take a crack at it.
Not surprisingly, the fastest working man in showbiz, electro estate, was the first to complete his version and the results are, I think, really beautiful.
I asked EE about his approach to the remix and this is what he had to say:
Well my approach was this:
Listen to the song and listen to my first hunch. I didn't over think a theory. I kept the song completely untouched in regards to composition. I just added beats and small touches to the song, mainly focusing on a slow uphill drama with percussion, while trying to not overpower the vocals.
In the end, I think there is a nice balance between vocal storyline, and beat. I see this less as a remix, and more of an alternate version of the original.
----
If this remix inspires anyone else here to have a crack at remixing, please email me at ledebutant@gmail.com and I'll happily send the files to you. The terms for the remix are described in the forum thread I linked about. Matt and I intend for any remixers to be free to post the song on their own MJ page, but Mr. Estate requested that we post his version here, humble soul that he is.
The orginal song can be found here.
I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I did and thank you, Brandon!

Lyrics
Saturnine
An empty book,
filled with photographs of you,
on the Great Wall of China,
Brooklyn, 1992.
Can't take back now what you've left behind.
We all fall,
(Endings never escape shame.)
We all fall
(Aren't you the one who never had a reason for love?)
We all fall
(and who will bear the blame?)
You're pulling faces now,
every feature in a frown.
It's our wedding day
and you said you didn't like my gown.
Can't give you now what I've left behind.
(and who's to blame?)
We all fall
we all fall
(and I'm not to blame)
Every photo fades,
the ink it drains away,
and in my empty book,
the pages start to fray.
I wonder if you know what you've missed.
We all fall...
An empty book,
filled with photographs of you,
on the Great Wall of China,
Brooklyn, 1992.
Can't take back now what you've left behind.
We all fall,
(Endings never escape shame.)
We all fall
(Aren't you the one who never had a reason for love?)
We all fall
(and who will bear the blame?)
You're pulling faces now,
every feature in a frown.
It's our wedding day
and you said you didn't like my gown.
Can't give you now what I've left behind.
(and who's to blame?)
We all fall
we all fall
(and I'm not to blame)
Every photo fades,
the ink it drains away,
and in my empty book,
the pages start to fray.
I wonder if you know what you've missed.
We all fall...

This IS freakin' beautiful... it has a meditative, church-like transcendence to it. It's one of those instances when you almost forget you are listening to music... it just puts you in a place... just listen to it again and see what I mean.
