Stand Up

Description
This is a little experiment in improvisation. I threw a bunch of electricc piano loops up and only listened to enough of them to figure out that it would probably sound okay. Didn't listen to them all, and had no real sense of where they were going. I wanted this to be a real improvisation. Next I threw some bass in, starting and stopping it on a whim; again, without listening. I repeated that with drums.

Finally, I closed my eyes and just started singing. What you hear is the improvisational track -- no lyrics written (rather obvious), no melody in my head, just letting the music take me wherever it wanted.

The style is jazz fusion, something I don't know much about so the vocals probably aren't very fusionish.

Anyway, I thought I'd share my little experiment -- all done in less than half an hour (I did have to adjust a couple of levels afterward, as they were peaking) and done purely for the love of improvisational singing. I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics
Sometimes
You got to stand up for what you believe
Some times
Call for that

You won't be free unless you stand up
Just stand up
And be counted
For what you believe

Uh huh

Stand up
For what you believe

They'll try to take your opinions away
They'll try to make you say what all the others say
You gotta stand up
I said stand up
For what you believe
What you believe

Don't let them tell you what you have to believe
Don't let them tell you what you're supposed to think
Make up your mind, your own mind, your own mind, make it up and
Stand up
For what you believe

The spirit of improvisation
is what it is, no more, no less, but making music live as live a music can be... beautifil and soulful essay on the essence of jazz. Jam on.

Jeez!
Half an hour!, rub it in, why don't you? Seriously, terrific piece. Your
singing always amazes me. Although I'm a fairly new member of MJs, I've
checked out the site several times before joining and always kept an eye
out for your work. I'm very glad I decided to check today. I had to
download this. Thanks

awesome
Joanna,
Wow I got sucked into this tune as it went along. What I liked best was the way the vocal harmonization topped the keyboards and made for some really colorful expanded chords. A difficult genre' to do well, and I think you pulled it off. Bravo !!!!
