Description:
One of my favorite all time songs is "Oh come Emanuel"... sometimes I like to try to write the thing as best as i can in my own voice... so here is my vocal attempt... the bass is a synth so this might not really qualify... if any one out there can sing this low have at it

Lyrics:
ONE ANCIENT SEASON WE PLAYED IN FIELDS OF LIGHT
FAITH FILLED WITH REASON PURE SIGHT
SHAKY ALLEGIANCE, FORBIDDEN OR NOT QUITE
ONE ACT OF TREASON, ITS NIGHT, ITS NIGHT

WE FALL DOWN BLIND UNSURE
CLAY FEET MUST STAND
SOME DAY HE’LL COME, A CURE
GOD BE A MAN

ONE HOPE THAT GROWS IN THE MYTHS WE LEFT BEHIND
A LIVING LEGEND, A SIGN
LOOK FOR THE CHOSEN, DESCENDING ANCIENT LINE
FORSAKEN, BROKEN, IN TIME, IN TIME

WE FALL DOWN BLIND UNSURE
CLAY FEET MUST STAND
SOME DAY HE’LL COME, A CURE
GOD BE A MAN, GOD BE A MAN, GOD BE A MAN

Hardware:
G5... baby bottle... drawmer preamp... mackie onxy mixer

Scott... what can I say? &mdash 09/06/06 - 12:04:16 AM
This just grabs my heart and soul. The lyrics are profound and poetic.
Your vocals overtake my ears, filling them with sounds of wonder.
"Some day He'll come, a cure... God be a man." Amen.

beautiful &mdash 09/06/06 - 01:50:51 AM
feeling and subject, have you tied the vocal transformer in GB3 or Logic pro? try it out, its not the greatest AU but if you work with it you might get some good results.

God be you and me &mdash 09/06/06 - 07:58:21 AM
Altho this is a warm and pleasantly cross-genre song, wonderfully and
intimately performed, with very nice terraced layered vocals, and altho
this is obviously a call of the Second Coming, there is something else that
I found compelling in the message. Perhaps it was in the simple honesty
of your voice. There is a call for each one of us, in your voice (in my
mind), that asks for washing off our blindness, that sparks courage, that
says we as Man can walk godlike in kindness and light, ourselves, as part
of an unbroken chain of wisdom and caring. This is what I felt in you
voice and poetry. Thanks.

Wow &mdash 09/06/06 - 04:00:01 PM
Scott, this is great. You have such control of your voice. It's really beautiful to listen to this. Would be great to have this arranged for a big choir and have them sing it in a church.
Well done!

I love this! &mdash 09/06/06 - 04:03:57 PM
Just fantastic creation. After listening my heart and body was filled with
the kind of "holy" peace, you know like when there is no need for
anything more but just to stay in it. Like when everything is right in
place. A minute or two like that makes the day.

Nevertheless I have some technical issues. Don't know if you will ever
consider going back to work more on the mix, but if so; here is my list
of desiderata:

First. The breating-ins; though surely realistic and belonging there,
there is something about them that sound too much, I can't say what,
maybe they are to hasty? Or maybe the baby bottle is too sensitive to
these kind of sounds?

Secondly, but with some hesitation, I usually don't want more room
echo, rather the opposite, but this time I would have liked to have
more "cathedral". But I guess that a really pro plugin would be
required for to help this superb production anywhere, (none of the
ones I have in Logic express would do). So in case of lack of such
plugs, I'd prefer it unchanged.

Hope my comments can be of any help.
I love this song so much!

Pure, naked, unadulterated. Very impressive, yet again.

I Like This &mdash 09/06/06 - 06:04:18 PM
What strikes me at first is that I'm accustomed to hearing 'older' or
more seasoned (worn?) voices sing in this style - this (unintentionally
most likely) reminds me of the boy bands that were popular a few
years ago, rather than doo wop or gospel ensembles.
I'm guessing leaving in the breathing is a choice you made since it's
relatively easy enough to edit out. When I did an a capella tune about a
year ago (strangely by far my most downloaded tune - I'm not a singer
- it's probably being used in a classroom somewhere as an example of
how not to sing), I made the choice of editing out the breathing on the
background voices because I didn't want to draw attention away from
my lead vocal - where I left the breathing in.
Lyrically, I'll wait for the video to interpret the meaning up for me. ;)
PS - no need to use the vocal transformer on this, IMO.

wow &mdash 09/06/06 - 06:19:54 PM
you know a song is great if it sounds good coming out of laptop speakers.

Amazing mix here. The articulation and harmonic character is truly outstanding - you can really hear the baby bottle and drawmer shine and shimmer.

I love the feel and the ethereal quality.

I can hear them playing along &mdash 09/06/06 - 06:35:09 PM
This is lovely. Very sweet sounding and such control... really nice layering
on the vocals singing glory to the King! Yeah I know there's only vocals.
When listening I can hear the instruments waiting to break in the
background and I can almost hear them playing along with the angels.
Very nice just the way it is but it too calls for a second version.

Exceptional! &mdash 09/06/06 - 06:58:33 PM
Lovely harmonies Scott - very reminiscent of CSN&Y (mainly C). The
breaths are obviously the only possible nit here, and I wouldn't suggest
they were removed, but maybe a slight reduction in their volume might
keep the "live" feeling they induce but not make them a feature.
This is really an exceptional a cappella piece Scott and I'm very
impressed.
Thanks,
Neil

Remarkable! &mdash 09/08/06 - 11:53:42 AM
I was almost surprised at how much I enjoyed this song! The background vocals blend perfectly with the lead voice and the chord structure is simply beautiful. I also like how the mixed the overall sound %u2013 balanced and smooth, but never contrived. Truly original and very successful interpretation.

One of the MacJams diamonds &mdash 09/09/06 - 10:43:33 AM
And since no body else has mentioned the somewhat Beach Boys-like
sound and harmonies that are contained on this piece, I will mention it.
There are places where your voice even sounds Beach Boy-like. Glad
you posted this.

Masterful! &mdash 09/09/06 - 08:54:53 PM
Dude, that was absolutely amazing. Not sure what I can add that hasn't
been said already. I was honestly moved by this and that doesn't
happen very often. Awesome job

Just a couple technical things that could put it over the top. When the
leads stop, the Background Vocal Pads could come up a little bit in the
Mix and then back down when the leads come back in. A little
automation should do the trick.
Also good pitch overall
But on the last word of some phrases the intonation is slightly shaky.
Again just a touch of Vocal auto-tuning for those phrases and you
should be set.

You deserve the highest marks for this one. Looking forward to more
from you. Congrats and keep it up.
Masterful work of Art

Resonating &mdash 09/10/06 - 08:02:52 PM
A profound message delivered in a rich, textured vehicle of vocal symphonics. Wonderful. Although this rendition is very fine, I would like to hear you re-sing it in 6 months, when you have fully "learned" the song. It is this way with most of my creations. I revisit my song a month or a year later and think "how tentative" or "how slow". I know you will soon be able to deliver this song with more legato and soul, less metronomic precision. Let it flow!

Man!!! The chills I got from the onset were abit overwhelming - You have such a sweetness to your music that and it is not meant for me to bealble to put my fingers on just what it's all about - It originates from a deepnest that I can barely reach and that makes it that much more swetter - Man... - I absolutely loved this - One day, when I grow up, maybe you will let me produce, or be apart of producing something that you're working on -

Okay, I gotta keep moving here - Lots of catching up to do - Thanks for sharing this Scott - You are a very speacial soul - Dion

1) So pretty - I can just turn on my Scott Carmichael playlist and relax.
That has yet to fail.
2) So heartfelt - similar effect as 1).
3) So good - it's just good music. It's as easy as that.

Wonderful.

Your finest yet Scott... &mdash 09/17/06 - 06:44:13 PM
---reminds me of some of Runrig's recent stuff. Pure devotion this. I am
awestruck. (By the way, my two favorite hymns are "Be Thou My Vision"
and "O Come Emmanuel."). The vocals, especially the harmonies, are right
on. Kudos!

Be well!

I've been having trouble with my left hand... it's becoming increasingly harder to play... and I have to plan when I will play with medication (anti-inflamitories)... hence the a-capella... I wanted to see what would be left without my hand... I haven't been around much, but it's great to hear from you... you have been riding on top of the picks all week.. and the stuff is absolutely top shelf... your artistry is stunning

Terrific A Cappella piece!

No doubt a lot of thought went into your arrangement.

Harmonies and unison work are so well done.

Your timing is spot on.

a keeper.

Bravo, Scott.

I just... &mdash 06/23/07 - 04:13:11 PM
Logged out from MJ when I heard this playing on the 'Autoplay', so I just had to listen and sign back in to comment. I think there is nothing more exciting and beautiful than vocal harmony and you have just made my day, hearing this piece. I don't know the song but I love it and your treatment. I love the discordant bell like harmony on the words'sight', 'night'etc.. The backing harmonies too are just delish and rich. One of my all time favourites for sure, M

Hi Maurice &mdash 06/24/07 - 11:48:14 AM
You wouldn't have heard this before... I wrote it a few years ago... it was actually an acoustic guitar song that I decided to do acapella kind of on a wym... i was having a small trouble with my hand so I wanted to see If I could do music without my hand.. but it's much better now

thanx so much; Scott

Scott, this is really a beautiful piece &mdash 10/28/07 - 09:09:36 PM
It enriches the soul of those who hear it. All that is required is to listen in faith. You harmonies are near perfect, and what few flaws are there are of no consequence.

But there is a suggestion I'd like to make about the melody. In several places throughout the song at the end of the line you hold the last note out for the entire time you sing it. ie: in the first verse when you sing the last word "sight", and "night'.

What I'd like to suggest would be for either the harmony vocals or the lead vocal to drop down and go from, for instance, a C to a G chord.

I'm sorry Scott, I can hear it in my head and play it on the keyboard, but I'm not sure I'm making what I'm feeling about it clear. It just seems to me to need to have the harmony and vocal at those places change so the end on the line doesn't seem to hang in the air, as it seems to do now, in my mind.

Oh never mind, just ignore the old coot in the corner and he'll go away.

Anyway I love it Scott. It is so very beautiful what you have done. Bravo!

Ed
