Description
I'm not exactly sure which genre best suits this song so I'm putting it under folk-rock although it probably isn't. Suggestions welcome!

Lyrics
When It Gets This Late In The Evening

When it gets this late in the evening
And the drinks are getting low
Your friends, well they’re all leaving
They got somewhere else to go
You’ve spent the whole night standing
At the dark end of the street
But when it gets this late in the evening
There’s no one left to meet

You’ve sang your last blue song
Your voice gave up its ghost
So you whisper like a deathbed confession
And say goodnight to the host
You just need something to believe in
Someone to be a friend
‘Cause when it gets this late in the evening
Just want to make it to the end

When it gets this late in the evening
You wonder how it got this wrong
Was it the crack in the glass
The bourbon or the ash
Or the minor chords in the song
Or the minor chords in the song

There are lovers in the darkness
And they’d let you take it all
For just a moment without sadness
They’re crying down the hall
There’s a Bible you’ve been reading
And there’s a bottle by the bed
When it gets this late in the evening
You’re blowing smoke rings for the dead

Folk-rock... by whatever genre
this is just one great song and one great performance. Standing with
applauds. You got some great song writing here... I love that refrain...
"or was it the minor chords in the song." Classic.
Glad I found this song and I look forward to listen to more of your
songs (I just noticed you have a bunch uploaded over the past month).
Welcome to MJ. Glad you are here.

Very Strong Song
I think you express yourself very well in this song, your lyrics are
excellent and very much convey the feelings and desperation when a body
sinks into a dark place. I hear echoes of John Prine in some respects, but
your voice is very different from his. Love it, this works very well.

Genre?
I don't know, but it sure sounds like the kind of song John Prine would sing; what's his genre? I've always had trouble defining it, I just knew I loved it, and this song is growing on me rapidly. The last verse nails it for me: Bible and Bottle, life has a way of making even the simple things complicated. The vocal starts a little strange for me, but you make up for it quickly and by the end I'm buying it. Well done.

Sometimes,
you just get tired. Been a long day, a long life or a long session. "You're blowing smoke rings for the dead."
Memories of what was. Got to force yourself to look ahead and hope you'll be making some new memories you can hold onto to give it all meaning. Nice, bluegrassy feel. Thank you.
