Description
This was written by ledebutant, Lisa Purdy, a singer I recently collaborated with on a remix, and she's given me permission to post this. Here's an excerpt from her e-mail to me giving me permission to post this cover:
"I really can't express to you how meaningful it is to me that you did
this and that you take me seriously as a singer or a songwriter. I had
close to crippling health problems through all of my 20's and into my
30's and, just at the time I regained my health, I discovered
GarageBand and it was as though someone suddenly gave me back
everything that had been taken away. I had so many things I was
"supposed" to have been that I never ended up being. Honestly, Jim, I
had given up dreaming about being anything but a person that got up
and got through one day and then the next and the next until I one day
died.

Music changed all that. It's not that I have any big dreams of
becoming a professional musician, but I wake up every day now with
buckets of ideas and stacks of things I'm working on and a growing
pile of songs that are a marker of how much time has passed since I
was sick. It feels as though I'm moving closer to something rather
than just marking time...

...The fact that you took the time to work on not
one, but two of my songs, just means a lot to me, makes me feel that
maybe I'm not just goofing around, because I KNOW you're not.
...
Do you want to post this at Macjams (or anywhere else, actually)? I'd
be so happy if you did."

So here I play a couple things that I don't know how to play really; the real drums played with brushes, the bow on the viola where I play the one note I could play in tune, for the whole song, along with the typical rudimentary piano and rudimentary banjo that I usually manage. At some point I figure I got to a plateau where I'm not going to get any better on those instruments, but as long as I don't get too ambitious and I just try to play a few right notes, I might end up with something musical. The original version can be found here: http://www.macjams.com/song/10741

Thanks, ledebutant!

Lyrics
After All

Newspapers piled by the front door,
this house isn't mine, not anymore.
I pick up your suitcase,
I put away my shoes.
After all, what is love for?

After all what is love for?

I'm not who you want me to,
but then again, neither is she.
If there's one thing
that I'm asking from you --
it's to be careful if you go.

I walk to the room where you're asleep.
Hearing you breathe
feels like something to keep.
I lift up the blankets
and lie down next to you.
After all what is love for?

After all what is love for?

I'm not who you want me to,
but then again, neither is she.
If there's one thing
that I'm begging from you --
please don't go.

Please don't go.

Pleading in vain
Fascinating concept. Like you are making it up on the spot, laying on the
couch, randomly picking away. Sung as if you are thinking it, not actually
singing it aloud. And then, effects change, you are pulled into a new
dimension, and I suddenly am required to think of the lyrics in a new way,
as you plead, using your voice, as if it is too late, and your legs don't work
and you can't get up and she is out the door... Fascinating. It left me with
a hole in my heart. So simple, so unexpected.

all heart
This song goes straight to the heart. I've always been very impressed with this song. Lyrically.. it tell s a story and leaves mysteries, pours on emotions. Jim, just a super job. I like this the different vocal styles you employ. and the instrumentaion as well. bravo

Thanks a lot!
Granted that this version of the song is a little experimental, and it may
not be for everyone, so I appreciate the positive comments. The original
version of this is a great song that transcended the loops that served as
the original music bed, and it's clear it merits a re-working. I wanted to
give it an interpretion that sort of goes along with some of the things I've
been listening to lately, Sufjan Stephens and The Mountain Goats. In the
process I ended up with something a little different, but I like to try new
things...

Great version
And I like Tobin's imagery for it. Really creative mix, which sounds like the nostalgic appeal of an old film, thickened out into someting a little more than 3 dimensions. I think your approach reflects the mood of the song perfectly.

somewhere exceptional!
Wow, what a moving song and performance. I read Lisa's email while
this started, and wondered where it was heading - it was heading
somewhere exceptional! Jim. I like all your work, but I especially like
the way you have taken Lisa's excellent song and put your own stamp
on it without taking away anything from the original's lyrics. The
simple use of instruments you "don't play" really makes this. I've just
listened to jgurner's latest where he uses French Horn for the first
time, and although I suspect he plays it quite well, there was a similar
effect - something new played within the limits of expertise, but
melded with other instruments to form a complex, moving whole.

Touching, Plaintive
Vulnerable. Naive yet deft. Involving.
I'll need to check out Sufjan Stephens and The Mountain Goats.
(from my listening references, this reminds me of Gastr del Sol).

lovely! authentic!
Nice work Jim. This is a wonderful rendition of our beloved Lisa's great
lyrics. We all here at MJ are truly blessed to have her. Your tin-pan-alley
approach to mixing in this one really delivers, as does your subdued and
grainy vocal treatment. I love it. Well done man.

Take care!

Nice work!
Wow, I did not expect to hear this type of music from you, but I am glad I
did. This is an excellent performance of art-music in the same fashion as
of Laurie Anderson, John Lourie & others...This is not only a good
performance, but is this also a colaboration betweeen you and
"ledebutant"... This is the exellence of music, mark my words!

Jim
This is too beautiful! Wow when I started listening to this, I thought that the experimental musicality (though very pretty) would not do the complex emotions of the original justice, but sure enough I was crying by the end - emotions intact, music absolutely captivating as all your experimental stuff has been for me. Thanks - this is great!
