The Greatest Show

Description
Another from the archives.

This song is about life in a traveling circus. Pretty self-explanatory, actually. I hope you enjoy it.

Note: I apologize for the extra garbage at the end of the song. I was interrupted when processing this one and forgot to trim the end. That stuff isn't supposed to be there. I can't edit the Macjam file to replace the song with the trimmed version and since some people were nice enough to comment, I'm not going to delete it. But please accept my apologies for the file not ending on the last guitar strum.

Lyrics
They heard the circus came to town today
Ringmaster work us beyond what he can pay
The tents go up with sweaty speed
Sawdust, tights, and lion feed
Clowns don't laugh and acrobats don't swing
Outside the center ring

All of the people love to see us come
Big Top glee pull smiles from everyone
And the fat lady sit in enormous chair
Thin man stand as if he wasn't there
The lion tamer seems to risk his head
But the lions are well fed.

Behind the masks of gaiety we wear
Remain the tasks and troubles that we bear
The animals can't sleep at night
And strong man's dreams are filled with fright
And the bearded lady never gets to shave
Oh, the money she has saved.

And then the run is over for this year
The people's fun ends quickly as they clear
But we gotta deal with a leaky tent
We gotta pack our gear in the trains we rent
Say goodbye to friends we briefly knew
No time for ballyhoo.

But the life is ours, and it will do
I wouldn't change for nothin' new
'Cause the circus is the only life I know
It's still the greatest show.
'Cause the circus is the only life
The circus is the only life
The circus is the only life I know
It's still The Greatest Show!

fun
I like the feel and sound of this. The strumming you did was
interesting. It has a circus feel without the usual organ and such. At
first the background hiss was annoying, but it kinda has a lo-fi charm
to it. This made me smile also.

Thank you!
bornagainpagan - thank you so much for your comment. The picture is
actually a puzzle. That's the cover of the box.

ewebacca - Sorry about the hiss. I appreciate your putting up with it
and your ability to fiind it charming. Lo-fi describes this in every way.

vbluesky - Thank you, and no, I have no plans to redo the songs.
They're pretty old and I stopped playing guitar so I no longer have the
skills to redo the songs. It would take awhile to get back up to speed
and I don't remember the chords, etc. that I played. These are just
songs I enjoyed revisiting on tape.

R.I.P.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus gave its final performance after 146 years on May 21, 2017. Good-bye, and thanks for the cotton candy. I saw you as a child and visited the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI (which is not closing). I dedicate this song to circuses past, present, and future (just promise not to abuse any of the animals).

Hi, I'm Joanna (not Jo, that's someone else). Garageband has allowed me to indulge my love for singing beyond concerts in the shower. My favorite part of songwriting is writing the lyrics. This makes sense, of course, because writing is what I d... [see more]
