Description:
Set to an easy groove, this instrumental piece was written to be evocative. Think of when you’ve been someplace very meaningful to you, a place that puts you in a state of mind that connects you in a way that everyday life can’t. It’s time to go back home, but you stop and take in a final moment, to embed the feeling in your soul's memory…
African and other percussion instruments carry the rhythm, while a combination of symphonic and synthetic sounds state the theme and variations. It is hoped that new aspects of the arrangement will be revealed with each listen.

Thank you both very much.

Professional as always Futz. Wyndham Hill throwback no doubt! :-) I like the blending of the various percussion elements. I'd like to hear the piano a bit more, but maybe it's my headphones. The English Horn (or was that soprano sax?)is cool, along with the orchestral elements. Anyway, nice work! DLFS (download for sure).

futzpucker
Ah, yes, the English horn. I use it quite often. I love its sound and the mood it
creates. I also love putting a rhythm track together with all the percussion
sounds that are available, and having an orchestra to play with... It's very
enjoyable creating a song like this.
I'm pleased you like how it turned out, Graham. Thanks for your comment.
ktb
futz, hard to believe you didn't have more than sound modules at work
here. There's some truly exceptional analog type instrumentation
through out (electric gtr riff, percussion and the the grand piano :-)
Very thoughfully crafted. Many props on the recording itself, top shelf
all the way. I liked the way the strings threaded the progression, both
taking lead and providing some backing.
I so relate to your song description. I have countless times, taken a
long look at a place in time when i knew I might not return soon. I have
breathed deeply and tried to sear the image, smells and tastes into my
mind. I'm on my 3rd listen, so tastefull on par with Russ Freeman.
futzpucker
John, I'm surprised at times with the quality of the software modules that are
available today - they do sound nice. Thanks for noticing the recording itself - I
did spend a good amount of time trying to get it right.
Russ Freeman? Thank you. I'm unworthy of that comparison, but I appreciate it.
Thank you very much for listening and commenting, John. You are a wonderful
composer and arranger.
drakonis
Funny, we've been "there" many times... one of our favorites is the
backpacking hike in the pine trees to Round Valley at the top of Mt.
San Jacinto above Palm Springs, CA. There's a very strong pull to that
mountain for us, and a long "final moment" before we have to return...
so I know the feeling exactly.
Interestingly, the background to this music reminds me in some ways
to my wife's favorite jazz guitarist, Peter White. But your
instrumentation is much richer, with pianos, strings, great percussion,
bass, electric guitars, synths, oboe (or sax?), ... it just flows on and on,
the way you want the final moment to. I like the way you have the
theme show up throughout, gently handed to different groups of
instruments to keep it fresh, slowly building to the end.
Ooh, nice ending you added! I like the bluesy piano bit, melting into a
final wash, bravo. Production quality is perfect, everything was well
balanced and clear.
Your stuff is usually very smooth and dreamy, upbeat and cleansing. I
am in awe of your abilities... you manage to do some really complex
things and make them seem easy. thank you for sharing them with us
here! I will play this for my wife and see what she thinks.

Eduard, I know what a great listener you are, and so I am very grateful to read
what you've written here. I'm also pleased that you have a place that
corresponds to the concept of A Final Moment.
I greatly appreciate your having listened to a preliminary version of this song
and giving me encouragement to finish it - this song took many, many hours to
finish. Thanks, Eduard.
moorlandt
I agree with Eduard: such an easy gioing piece for the listener, but surely much more complex for the composer. Perfectly performed and neatly produced. This is a very appealing song to me, Patrick.
Walter
futzpucker
Walter, I am very grateful to hear from you. Your musical growth has been very
noticeable here, and you are highly respected. So to receive this comment is an
honor. Thank you so much. I'm very pleased you like this song.

The chills that commanded my full attention was indicative of having
arrived back to that place... This is so good - It is quite exceptional -
Man, you put alot of work into this - A LOT! of work - Intensely groovn'
- And it really MOVED through me - Strikingly sweet - Heartfelt -
Mindful - Soulful - And absolutely wonderful!!!
I think that you have accomplished your goal - Thanks for taking me
home - A very nice journey - Now that i know the way, I'm sure to
revisit as often as what may seem a bit impractical - But hey..., it is
where home is...
Dion
futzpucker
Dion, your words are deeply felt, and highly appreciated. It is so nice to know
that you really *listen* to the songs you comment on. I am honored by what you
wrote. Thank you so much.
I am so glad you're back on the site. Your spirit was missed.

grandness. Nice touch and sensibiltiy to the composition. Movement is
really nice. Thanks for this!
futzpucker
Christian, thank you so much. What an honor to hear this from a musician of
your stature. I know the members of this site will love your music, which is so
very high-quality.
Thank you so much for listening and leaving a comment.
soulmonk
I love the dynamics in this song, a beautiful composition. I'm alway
impressed with the movement of your music... Like a daydream... It
inspires multiple thoughts and feelings. I would love to pick your brain on
how you layer the intruments without over-cluttering.
Once again a fav.
futzpucker
Ah... these words are so very pleasing to read... Thank you so much. Having
heard your music, you need not the slightest help from me. You are a complete
pro (and very good with words, as well). I am very grateful.
MissChaos
I agree with Graham; this is worth waiting for. I suppose I cannot
comment on the technical achievements because I'm completely humbled
and dumbfounded by the expertise involved in this. This is the difference
between folks like me who pretend to be composers and real ones. :-)
Complexity and complacency -- you make it sound so natural. Patrick,
I'm in awe, as usual. Thank you for this magic. Your pal, Miss C.
futzpucker
Miss Kay Ahs, you are a legitimate composer with wonderful skills. Your material
is always very well done, engaging, and very satisfying to listen to. You do not
pretend to be anything - you are what you are, which is: very talented.
Because of my respect for you, it means a lot to me that you enjoy my music. I
am very gratified to hear you enjoy this song. Thank you for letting me know.

I go "o goody a futz tune :) So hear I am hearing this fabulous tune. Love
how it get light with the piano and the wonderful electric guitar feel. The
list goes on. This stuff is a delight, really all your stuff I've heard is top
notch here at mJ. It seems like all is so carefully planned and pinpointed
to precise precision.
Another futz's gem!
A delight to hear! Ear candy!

very generous to me from my first submission here. I am very grateful for your

Ahhhh...wheneverI need a dose of true artistic sensiblities, I know
*exactly* where to come. ;)
Pulling all the complex instrumentations into something that sounds so...
pure... and simple... is an amazing talent.
You never disappoint, Patrick. Beautiful work. 10

futzpucker
I put quite a bit of time in on this song, Joe. I darn near drove my wife over the
edge working on it. To read what you've written here makes me think it was
worth every second I spent on it. I am very, very grateful to hear this from you.
Music is written to communicate - when it does, there's no feeling like it...
Please accept my sincere gratitude.
jiguma
What a beautifully soothing work Patrick - the intertwining of the
various instruments works so perfectly all the way through. The only
bit that I was unsure of (at first) was the strident strings, but as I near
the end they are making much more sense to me, and fit so well. I
envy your control of the keyboard!
Neil
futzpucker
Neil, thank you for listening. I'm glad bringing back the original theme with the
original instrumentation stating it made sense to you.
It's great to hear from you on this, Neil. I hold you in high regard as a musician
and as a person. Thank you very much.
ziti
this is nothing but an UBER-blues futz. It is just soo cool. I hear Ry
Cooder slide guitar or maybe some ziti, if he did it just right.
In a community full of great composers, musicians and producers, your
contributions hit me the hardest. You nail me to the wall EVERYTIME!
much much respect, master

It's so great to know that what I try to put in the music I write connects deeply with even one other person. When that person is someone who himself plays music from the depths of his soul, I'm inspired to keep writing. Providing someone with inspiration is a very high act. Thank you, Fran.
AquilA
I've been waiting on this with anticipation and you don't disappoint. Your
many skills are on ample display here. Top notch composition with
performance and production to match. You have skill, style, and you're
the consummate MacJams citizen. Your quite the addition to this site.
Thanks for sharing, and for the schooling.
futzpucker
And I feel that *you* are schooling *me* on graciousness, AquilA. Your very kind words bring me a wonderful feeling. Thank you so much.
Ed Hannifin
...is-it-percussion?-is-it-melody? moment, this unfolds neatly and
smoothly, but with wonderful surprises.
You're one of the few composers who used those chuffing pan-pipey
sounds in an integral way...
I love the changes of timbres, tones and instruments as the piece
progresses. Sudden electric guitar, or the appearance of a new
instrument where the ear expects the one that was just carrying the
tune...
And that, to me, is LIKE the "final moment" moments...your senses are
acute, and you're easily taking in and experiencing each moment with
both peace and intensity, something I think of as "vibrant peace". You
see the trail differently coming down than going up...they're very
different journeys...
All of this works on every level for me.
Ed
futzpucker
Ed, I hope you understand how much a comment like this, one that so clearly reveals your focus during the listening, means to me, and to anyone whose music gets this level of attention. I realize that most people "skim" when they listen to music, and I accept that, so when I know someone really listened and as a result were taken somewhere... that's a great part of the motivation for the effort. Thank you so much, Ed.
ledebutant
What a gift is to hear this song, but to also be able to pay back all the
listens and comments you give so generously, Patrick.
This song was absolutely worth the wait and it is truly evocative of
something good and calming and worth returning to. So much of what
I love has already been commented upon, but I have to say that the
thing that strikes me most about this is the tremendous balance and
restraint in your composition. The whole spectrum of sound is
represented here and handled so absolutely expertly. This mix is
probably the cleanest I've heard here at MJ, by a mile.
Truly beautiful and full of that special class you embody so well.
maxruehl
...A new track from my pal, Patrick.:) Worth the wait, man. Very nice
vibe, and yes, very "Windham Hill"-sounding. That's a good thing in my
book.:) Was a brief moment where it felt a little Andreas Vollnweider,
too (a fave of mine), although without the harp. Okay, enough
comparisons (why do we feel the need to liken something to something
else? Beats me.;) This is a terrific little piece. Downloaded. Hope the
next one isn't so long in coming (look who's talking...ME, who's not
done squat in a looong time). Thanks again, man.:)

Like the wind blowing over me coming off the waves while I sit and wacth
the sunset in my favorite spot on this planet (and most other planets.)
Can't help but love it.
perceptualvortex
In particular, the percussion and strings blew me away. Heheh, wow, mission accomplished: very evocative. A lot of memories come forth. I love the way all of the instruments have room to breath, and yet they all dance around together, evolving as new instruments join in. It's a perpetually changing impressionist landscape painting. Really excellent, Patrick, and it's nice to hear a new song by you.
leonardo21
sounds real nice and chilaxin. very pro sounding. only small thing is I
woudnt call this jazz? I don know what the category is, but it dont
sound like jazz to me. Its' a totaly awsome song tho!
kristyjo
so i could put on the headphones and take some time to enjoy the music. I'm glad I did. I love the African spin on the percussion. As usual, so many layers of sound, all placed precisely where they needed to be. This kind of puts me in that 'relaxed, but alert' mental state.
On second listening, I need to comment on your instrumentation - lots of variety, but all fitting together very well. Gosh, you are a fine composer! Also, a great producer.
Ed_Moran
Patrick
This is my first time hearing your work and I was impressed to say the
least. Production gets a 10. Everything so clear and well balanced you

Loved it then and love it now.
A delightful journey of musical images.
Particularly liked the piano and the pan flute - a nice touch, that!
Wonderful work!

so when does the albulm come out this is top notch
j2morrow
The percussion adds a nice touch. The tune kept shifting and adding
surprises. Great choice of instruments, all the way through. Kudos.
Tiny_Man_Inside
This song has a very nice rhythmic feel. The attention to detail is very striking. How long did it take to write, perform, and produce this? I really like the repetitions of various themes, particulary when you have different instruments picking up from on another. Very smooth.
I have to say that one of my favorite things about this place is that it has really opened me up to different styles of music that I never really paid attention to before. There is so much talent on this site that people can be easily overlooked. I'm glad I stopped by to take a listen to this. I'm going to check out some of your other stuff as well.

An emphasis in mellow but not without exploring the exciting and mysterious as well... Kinda like the feeling of that action-adventure with her later after hours.... - movie, ehummm...
Nice, nice, enjoyable all the way through without a single complaint from this poor soul. Thanks, so much.

TobinMueller
Nice choice of audio palette. Everything has a lightness to it, a clarity and
separation that fills and adds to the whole. Very tight piano. This track is
good enough for Muzak distribution or a movie score background, which
is high praise on the authenticity of instrument sounds (and
performances) and quality of production. The syncopation is hip and
infectious, without every deviating from the original smooth intent. A
quality track all around. It is great New Age. Smooth jazz more than main
jazz instrumental, as a genre choice. Highly enjoyable, Patrick, full of
caresses and warmth.
dreadmon
Smooth and exciting all at once - another classy piece, Patrick!
Listen on this marvelous tune again.
It's flow so easy like a summer breeze and I love it.
This tune have so much power and happines it make me feel calm and
safe... it is a wonderful feeling.
Excellent job on the arrangement...as always.
Thanks, Patrick

to african rhythm sections. But it works here. This is a very good
composition. Well balanced and with a lot of detail hidden beneath the
surface structure. A bit of a musical puzzle. Must have been an awful
lot of work. Love the strings, love the flute. This piece makes sense.
Best
Denny
futzpucker
Thank you for listening and leaving a thoughtful comment, Denny. I did use African and other percussion instruments in this song, but I don't suppose I'd call the rhythm track African in its nature. It was my intention to use the percussion instruments in a way that worked for the song - I don't know whether or not I could create an actual authentic African percussion part. I will say that it is wonderful to have the instruments in the palette, to use as the song dictates.
I'm glad you liked the final result, and I appreciate your letting me know it.

I wish I could play guitar on this one....

Amazing composition. Nice complexities and I'm in awe of how you get such a broad spectrum of sounds blending together with no muddiness.
I see I still have a lot to learn!
futzpucker
Pete, I feel the same way you do - I have a lot to learn. It's great we have this site as a resource. This is a great place to learn. So much great music here...

Nice composition man! Very professionally done. The mix sounds great to me. Nice sounds and always interesting unexpected changes.
futzpucker
Thanks, Mr. Nugget. I enjoyed the process of working on this song very much. The mix took quite a bit of time to get right (and I still have some concerns), so I'm glad it sounded good to you.
Very kind of you to find this song and comment. Thank you.
announcer
This is a lesson in blending different textures and instruments into a unified whole. Great stuff.
futzpucker
Thank you, Mr. Announcer. It's very enjoyable to take a palette of sounds, choose which to use, play their parts, and then mix them so that they all work together. It's a time-consuming process. Getting nice comments like this is part of the great reward of doing so. I appreciate what you said.
philonnie
wonderfully complex composition with top notch performance and production .... maintains interest from start to finish ....you make it sound so easy but I know it isn't at all! a favourite and D/L for sure; many thanks for this aural treat.
futzpucker
Ah, Mr. Philonnie, how nice it is to hear that you enjoyed listening to this. The song did take a long time to reach completion, but, as you'd imagine, it was the most enjoyable process I can imagine. There's nothing like getting lost in the creation of music. I think we are all very blessed to have this outlet of writing music - there are benefits that I think we're not even aware of...
I appreciate the fact that you found this an aural treat. That was definitely one of my goals. Thanks for listening, Mr. Philonnie.
MattGranz
I love the beats and how the instrumentation plays around them. This has great atmosphere throughout. Very cool song!

Thanks for finding this song and Timber Cove. Having listened to JaBlues Radio, I'm honored to be on your playlist.
Paradoxical719
This is a truly amazing peice of work... The groove is very easy to get into, the combination of instruments you chose give it a very unique and fresh sound. Your mixing levels are perfect, the panning adds a lot of interest.
It's not very often that an orchestral sound can be put into a jazz context successfully. This is one of those rare occassions.
Faved.
futzpucker
Drew, welcome to MacJams, and thank you for finding this song and commenting.
Interestingly enough, it felt to me as though the instrumental decisions were made for me as I went along - I just went and fetched whichever instrument the song seemed to call for and played the part that felt necessary to me. The only deliberate aspect of the compositional process was to create a theme and variations.
In any case, I'm pleased you liked it. I look forward to more material from you in the future - from hearing your first submission, you are obviously talented.
amani
I haven't been on Macjams in a while. Really nice to hear this type of music. This one will be download once the system comes back online.
futzpucker
This type of music is not expected, at least by me, to be well received by many at this site. That it was by you is appreciated, as is the fact that you'd like to download a copy. Thank you for that honor.
Scott Carmichael
Patrick... I think this puts you in an elite class here... combining subtle composition changes, great playing, wonderful production skills... great textured sound scape... there are only a few here who have these kinds of chops...
wow fav'd & DL'd
futzpucker
Scott, because I am in such awe of the music you are able to create, in
terms of both content and presentation, your words are very meaningful
to me. Thank you for your generosity.
composerclark
This is 100% professional in every respect. I can think of nothing that I would change. It is hugely impressive. The basic groove is its most salient feature, and its subtle power just sweeps the listener along with it, as if floating down a river in a very pleasant trance. The panning is quite spectacular, and all sounds are perfect. I like the jazzy little piano licks that are interjected intermittently. The length is perfect. A highlight for me occurred around the mid-way point, when unexpectedly dissonant chords enter, suggesting the possible approach of a dark cloud in an otherwise cloudless sky. The praise you have received for this is much deserved.
PrepCook
I downloaded this as soon as I heard. It's really good chill music.
damiengh
and a big thank you for showing how it's supposed to be done. No stone unturned on this one. I can see why you drove your wife nuts, this kind of perfection is a time toller and what it gets, she doesn't. Your lucky to have her. Thanks again
Mcboy
what grandness in composition as well as sonic character....lush and gorgeous!!!! radio ready for smooth jazz stations.....
eanbardsley
I really admire the beauty and sophistication of what you are doing here. Jazz seems to depict a world alien to me, one I have never really been in, but pieces like this make me picture both forests and cities, especially cafe's of culture and art. Very beautiful, my favorite part is the bowed string section (violin, or viola?) Very pretty, the piano too.
stooey
to quote Stan Lee....'nuff said!"
I. Spike
Driving piece... although I'd be hard pressed to call it jazz. It feels more like a movie soundtrack to me.
I like the thick undercurrent of import that the strings give this piece. This could be used in a movie with a montage of warriors preparing for a battle or the building something.... something pushing it's way closer to the emotional nexus of the story.
Can you tell I kind of liked it...?
Joanna
This really does put one in a different place, a different frame of mind. Complex and cohesive, you really have quite a gorgeous piece of music here. Just beautiful. So smooth.

Love the how use the percussion but that is only the start. The list goes on cause I love everything about this soft-pop-jazzy-new age. You seem to milk everything you can out of this style and more.

Monsieur Roger, I admire your skill immensely. That you have stopped here to listen to one of my songs means a great deal to me. Thank you for your kind words.

Funky yet relaxing with a beautiful warm (and occasionally surprising!) mix of instruments. I love that English horn myself; I overuse it on just about every piece I write because it's so expressive, as it is here. This is a truly unique sound -- how you manage to blend the instruments yet keep them sounding distinctive is beyond me.
futzpucker
Thank you so much for listening to this song I posted so long ago, and then leaving a comment as well.
I'm glad someone else has English Horn's Addiction, and I'm happy I share the syndrome with you. It is such a gorgeous sounding instrument...
I very much appreciate your kind words, Magritte. Wonderful to hear from you.

I'll be out and about during the day and sometimes you'll pop into my head...
you've always been a generous soul... and apon my arrival here, I remember listening to this, and thinking that this place has some very talented folks... I didn't know then that this was really an exception to the norm... while yes there are talented people here, I still maintain that every ellement of this art we are all working at, is strongly at play in this piece of music... and you are a pro
I had listen to Drak use of this and remember noting to myself ... "be sure and let Patrick know that he does great work"
and significant... this is lush and beautiful

Terrific stuff indeed!

Always nice to hear from MacJams' most prolific composer. You've consistently been very kind with your comments to me, and I appreciate that. Thanks, Bill.

This sounds amazing. The music alone is great and the sound is the most professional I've heard here. I won't go into all the sonic, spectrum and placement stuff that I'm sure has been covered. I will say this though. If any of you(like myself) use reference music when you are mixing to see how your stuff is holding up........I suggest you come to Patrick's songs to see how and what can be done.
Just Fabulous

How fortunate for MacJams that a musician with your skills has found his way here.
I am humbled to read such meaningful comments written by someone at your level. Thank you for listening and being so generous with your comment.

but having heard it, I want it! But yes, I know is not the software, but the hand behind it. Wonderful display of sounds and melody.
Hi Patrick-
Paige Bishop Fulkerson here... have lost your email and decided to reach you here. I fully enjoyed listening to your songs last night while I was working online. Just pure magic! Great to see you getting so many acolads as well! On my side, I recently posted a simple song on McJam (The Look of Love) that I sang with my piano tuner providing keyboards and assembling it with Garage Band. We continue to work on similar genre songs. It's a rewarding project and I'm learning loads each week. Thought I'd let you know since I am a forever fan of your style and expertise. Hope you and your family are doing well. Would love to catch up at some point. My name on McJam is "moonlightandalcoves".
