Description:
Set to an easy groove, this instrumental piece was written to be evocative. Think of when you’ve been someplace very meaningful to you, a place that puts you in a state of mind that connects you in a way that everyday life can’t. It’s time to go back home, but you stop and take in a final moment, to embed the feeling in your soul's memory…

African and other percussion instruments carry the rhythm, while a combination of symphonic and synthetic sounds state the theme and variations. It is hoped that new aspects of the arrangement will be revealed with each listen.

Further acknowledgements: the two people whose suggestions regarding the arrangement of this song helped immensely - my brother, Kevin, and my wife, Marion, both of whom have great ears and never-ending patience. Thank you both very much.

Worth Waiting For &mdash 09/19/06 - 01:02:05 PM
Professional as always Futz. Wyndham Hill throwback no doubt! :-) I like the blending of the various percussion elements. I'd like to hear the piano a bit more, but maybe it's my headphones. The English Horn (or was that soprano sax?)is cool, along with the orchestral elements. Anyway, nice work! DLFS (download for sure).

Santa Rosa is first &mdash 09/19/06 - 04:06:36 PM
Ah, yes, the English horn. I use it quite often. I love its sound and the mood it
creates. I also love putting a rhythm track together with all the percussion
sounds that are available, and having an orchestra to play with... It's very
enjoyable creating a song like this.

I'm pleased you like how it turned out, Graham. Thanks for your comment.

futz, hard to believe you didn't have more than sound modules at work
here. There's some truly exceptional analog type instrumentation
through out (electric gtr riff, percussion and the the grand piano :-)
Very thoughfully crafted. Many props on the recording itself, top shelf
all the way. I liked the way the strings threaded the progression, both
taking lead and providing some backing.

I so relate to your song description. I have countless times, taken a
long look at a place in time when i knew I might not return soon. I have
breathed deeply and tried to sear the image, smells and tastes into my
mind. I'm on my 3rd listen, so tastefull on par with Russ Freeman.

John, I'm surprised at times with the quality of the software modules that are
available today - they do sound nice. Thanks for noticing the recording itself - I
did spend a good amount of time trying to get it right.

Russ Freeman? Thank you. I'm unworthy of that comparison, but I appreciate it.

Thank you very much for listening and commenting, John. You are a wonderful
composer and arranger.

love that final moment &mdash 09/19/06 - 01:10:17 PM
Funny, we've been "there" many times... one of our favorites is the
backpacking hike in the pine trees to Round Valley at the top of Mt.
San Jacinto above Palm Springs, CA. There's a very strong pull to that
mountain for us, and a long "final moment" before we have to return...
so I know the feeling exactly.

Interestingly, the background to this music reminds me in some ways
to my wife's favorite jazz guitarist, Peter White. But your
instrumentation is much richer, with pianos, strings, great percussion,
bass, electric guitars, synths, oboe (or sax?), ... it just flows on and on,
the way you want the final moment to. I like the way you have the
theme show up throughout, gently handed to different groups of
instruments to keep it fresh, slowly building to the end.

Ooh, nice ending you added! I like the bluesy piano bit, melting into a
final wash, bravo. Production quality is perfect, everything was well
balanced and clear.

Your stuff is usually very smooth and dreamy, upbeat and cleansing. I
am in awe of your abilities... you manage to do some really complex
things and make them seem easy. thank you for sharing them with us
here! I will play this for my wife and see what she thinks.

ttfn,
Drakonis

I agree with Eduard: such an easy gioing piece for the listener, but surely much more complex for the composer. Perfectly performed and neatly produced. This is a very appealing song to me, Patrick.

What a beautifully soothing work Patrick - the intertwining of the
various instruments works so perfectly all the way through. The only
bit that I was unsure of (at first) was the strident strings, but as I near
the end they are making much more sense to me, and fit so well. I
envy your control of the keyboard!

From that very first... &mdash 09/20/06 - 08:14:24 AM
...is-it-percussion?-is-it-melody? moment, this unfolds neatly and
smoothly, but with wonderful surprises.

You're one of the few composers who used those chuffing pan-pipey
sounds in an integral way...

I love the changes of timbres, tones and instruments as the piece
progresses. Sudden electric guitar, or the appearance of a new
instrument where the ear expects the one that was just carrying the
tune...

And that, to me, is LIKE the "final moment" moments...your senses are
acute, and you're easily taking in and experiencing each moment with
both peace and intensity, something I think of as "vibrant peace". You
see the trail differently coming down than going up...they're very
different journeys...

All of this works on every level for me.

Ed, I hope you understand how much a comment like this, one that so clearly reveals your focus during the listening, means to me, and to anyone whose music gets this level of attention. I realize that most people "skim" when they listen to music, and I accept that, so when I know someone really listened and as a result were taken somewhere... that's a great part of the motivation for the effort. Thank you so much, Ed.

What A Gift &mdash 09/20/06 - 01:24:58 PM
What a gift is to hear this song, but to also be able to pay back all the
listens and comments you give so generously, Patrick.

This song was absolutely worth the wait and it is truly evocative of
something good and calming and worth returning to. So much of what
I love has already been commented upon, but I have to say that the
thing that strikes me most about this is the tremendous balance and
restraint in your composition. The whole spectrum of sound is
represented here and handled so absolutely expertly. This mix is
probably the cleanest I've heard here at MJ, by a mile.

Truly beautiful and full of that special class you embody so well.

too (a fave of mine), although without the harp. Okay, enough
comparisons (why do we feel the need to liken something to something
else? Beats me.;) This is a terrific little piece. Downloaded. Hope the

In particular, the percussion and strings blew me away. Heheh, wow, mission accomplished: very evocative. A lot of memories come forth. I love the way all of the instruments have room to breath, and yet they all dance around together, evolving as new instruments join in. It's a perpetually changing impressionist landscape painting. Really excellent, Patrick, and it's nice to hear a new song by you.

so i could put on the headphones and take some time to enjoy the music. I'm glad I did. I love the African spin on the percussion. As usual, so many layers of sound, all placed precisely where they needed to be. This kind of puts me in that 'relaxed, but alert' mental state.

On second listening, I need to comment on your instrumentation - lots of variety, but all fitting together very well. Gosh, you are a fine composer! Also, a great producer.

This song has a very nice rhythmic feel. The attention to detail is very striking. How long did it take to write, perform, and produce this? I really like the repetitions of various themes, particulary when you have different instruments picking up from on another. Very smooth.

I have to say that one of my favorite things about this place is that it has really opened me up to different styles of music that I never really paid attention to before. There is so much talent on this site that people can be easily overlooked. I'm glad I stopped by to take a listen to this. I'm going to check out some of your other stuff as well.

Nice palette &mdash 09/25/06 - 07:14:39 AM
Nice choice of audio palette. Everything has a lightness to it, a clarity and
separation that fills and adds to the whole. Very tight piano. This track is
good enough for Muzak distribution or a movie score background, which
is high praise on the authenticity of instrument sounds (and
performances) and quality of production. The syncopation is hip and
infectious, without every deviating from the original smooth intent. A
quality track all around. It is great New Age. Smooth jazz more than main
jazz instrumental, as a genre choice. Highly enjoyable, Patrick, full of
caresses and warmth.

Thanks for finding this song &mdash 10/28/06 - 04:14:23 PM
Thank you for listening and leaving a thoughtful comment, Denny. I did use African and other percussion instruments in this song, but I don't suppose I'd call the rhythm track African in its nature. It was my intention to use the percussion instruments in a way that worked for the song - I don't know whether or not I could create an actual authentic African percussion part. I will say that it is wonderful to have the instruments in the palette, to use as the song dictates.

I'm glad you liked the final result, and I appreciate your letting me know it.
