Description:
I'm so excited to post this song!
In the Garden is the first song I ever wrote and I've always wanted to go back and remix it and, for some reason, though it's a somewhat dark song, I always thought it would make a cool dance track. Nothing like murder to make you want to shake your groove thing, after all.
Fortunately though, before I could remix it myself, PV did an amazing job remixing The Orbiting's Saturnine and I threw myself on the ground and cried until he agreed to remix In the Garden, too. Okay, I didn't cry, but he makes me call him Mr. perceptualvortex now.
I'm absolutely thrilled with what he did with the original song and all the elements I rather randomly chucked at him and all the new and wonderful things he added to the song, not to mention his stellar arrangement and production. This version is 99% a PV joint and my job was mostly to re-record the vocal at a higher bpm and say WOW, every time he sent me a new and even-better-than the-last-mix.
Mr. perceptualvortex is also perhaps the nicest person on the Western seaboard and has been such a great friend to me over the last year. Thank you so much, David for spending this much time and effort cooling-up In the Garden.
Hope you guys like this as much as I do!

Lyrics:
Sowing and growing, hemmed in by roses and lilies,
Sarah cleared the land in high school,
barbed wire, cedar rails and knotweed.
I'll check for footprints.
Is there anyone missing?
Under the layers of topsoil,
pretty red roses with crabapple heads.
Out in the greenhouse,
a willing gardener finds her.
Sarah takes down seeds and trowels,
birdseed, raspberries, poisoned weeds.
I'll check for footprints...
End of the season,
the leaves are taking a dive.
Someone's shoes found in the ground,
heaps of bug shells, shards of egg,
cover the wasted beds.
I'll check for footprints...

Loved the original and love this - David has really added a different
touch to this. Are you planning to remix ALL your earlier songs now??
Neil
ledebutant
What will you do to me if I answer yes? Thank goodness you're in Australia
and don't have incredibly long arms. I don't know that I plan to redo
everything, but I do have a new version of After All with real guitar in the
works and I say that anything where I originally panned all the tracks dead
center is fair game!
Thanks for being the first fan, Neil.
Electric Lobster
Cool grooves - but strange lyrics !
ledebutant
Yes, the lyrics are definitely a bit odd. They came from using cut up words
from a Country Living magazine, which I then rearranged into ideas for a
song and the rest followed. Since the time I originally wrote the song, I've
come to realize that the lyrics are very personally significant but it took me
about a year to figure that out. The subconscious is fascinating.
Wildcat
I like this song, and also this remix. You did good to go together with this song.
Great!
ledebutant
Thank you, Wildcat. I know you know the wonder of working with a great
collaborator.
Macaudion
That was pretty darn cool - I remember the original version... Like,
when you sounded abit more innocent Homey... This is very cool Lisa
and David - You are a couple of my fav fav, so how could it not be as
tasty as it is... - It just wasn't possible now was it... hee hee - This is
good guys - Very proffessional stuff you're laying out for us - And
who would believe that this stuff is free - David, you have a BIG music
making machine huh... - Lots of cool stuff messaging my happy little
ears - Yep, I wanna get up and dance!!! - Congradulations - And -
Thanks guys - Dion
perceptualvortex
Alright, this song is officially successful if it got you up and dancing, Dion! Thanks man!

You two are indeed amazing, and this shows a remarkable leap forward
from your early works... both of you. Lisa, your voice just keeps
getting stronger and more assured. Mr. David, your talent and toolbox
keeps growing, very nice layering of sounds and effects, and marvelous
job keeping it all crystal clear. This started out quite "full", but you still
left lots of room for Lisa's singing, I was impressed by that. I like the
increased tempo... my only gripe is that the chords in this song get a
little repetitive, the chorus doesn't break it up quite enough. But the
chopped up echoey down-the-rabbit-hole section near the end was
really really trippy! Loved the intro greenhouse door sfx. And Lisa's
vaguely creepy lyrics get me all the time, brava/bravo!
ttfn,
Drakonis (the nicest *dragon* on the western seaboard) :-)
perceptualvortex
Thank you, Eduard! I'm pleased that you enjoyed this, and I always appreciate your feedback about what it is you like and don't like in my mixes. Keeping room for Lisa's vocals through my noisyness was a challenge, but obviously crucial, so I'm quite glad you found that successful. You're probably the nicest dragon anywhere, and I always appreciate getting your winged opinion. Thanks for stopping in!

Um, I forgot to mention that California doesn't count re: Western Seaboard
(and that covers me in the Patrick department, too) :-)
Thanks for flying by, sir, and dropping off some astute insight.

This sounds pretty nifty! SOunds like you used some Jif on the Jibbulator maximizer! Home and garden cut up lyrics touched my soul!

Beautiful work guys. I have to listen to it a few more times before I can give you my full critique, but man this is so full of lucious sounds, vocals, and textures.
I envision hearing this in a major motion picture, during the "good guy finally gets the girl montage".

I will join in on the applause from the others here, to this masterpiece you two have made. Very cool marching groove with lots of excitement along the path to keep my attention all the way. Great!
moorlandt
Well, when I read your mail, I was expecting some glitchy D&B/IDM track. Haha. Instead I heard this very well produced and enjoyable pop song. You nailed it again guys. As mostly, I fully agree with Eduard's - mister analystener - comments. So, not much more to add for this ordinary guy. Except that I have one tiny suggestion about the singing: I would love to hear you escape from that one octave range you're in here, Lisa. I mean, get on top of it sometimes. This should be no prob for a gifted singer like you...
Walter
very well done PV.
I do remember this song from way back.

thanks, Brandon!

And I remember you remembering it. :-)

PV's remix adds a wonderful new dimension to what was already an
awesome tune (alwaysed loved the original. I like "dark.") It has a great
flowing soundscape and your redone vocals sound wonderful, Lisa. For
some odd reason, this tune has always reminded me of the movie
"Legend" (in a good way). I guess the combination of the dark overtones
and the innocent sound of your voice. PV's just done some amazing stuff
with the remix. Just lots of cool stuff throughout.
Great job guys!
perceptualvortex
So, it turns out that I like the movie Legend... it's all about the mise en scene, man! Thanks for the kind words, Joseph, I'm glad you like what I did with the soundscape.

I highly enjoyed the big red guy in Legend (blocking the memory of Tom
Cruise out of my mind) and ever since I saw that movie, we've always referred
to the devil as Big Red...
That's my addition to the discussion. It's not much, but it's mine ;-)
Of course, I'm very happy you liked it, Joe.
datafunk
when 2 great artists meet, you have a top hit :-)
Jim Bouchard
This vast transfiguration of the original song, from top to bottom, makes
this extremely enjoyable. It's obviously a really dense mix, and the song
gets swept up in this momentum that is truly contagious. There's only one
thing I was hearing from the original that I was wishing was improved, it's
that mandolin loop that is sounding like there's some artifacts from a
key/tempo changing; it sounds a little warbly, and it would be great if you
could find a mandolin player to record that part just to fix that little itty-
bitty thing. But that's just me being truly picky, and feel free to ignore me!
Great job! Downloaded!
...now watch out for the banjo version!
perceptualvortex
I know what you mean about the mandolin line... I tried smoothing it out... but nothing would beat recording an actual mandolin player! Thanks Jim, I'm glad this swept you up!

Great news of a remix, ledebutant! You should make more remixes of
your things that are, you know, more 'ELECTRIC', in my vocabulary. It's
stupendous! It's tremendous! It just takes my breath away! It is totally
rad...
I especially like the part where it goes up and then down in the tone. In
fact, as my dad types I am dancing to this mix. It's just a great mix,
ledebutant. Tell perceptualvortex that I say 'hi'! It's totally...well, I just
can't say it...it's awesome...
Sincerely,
Your friend,

Hey, PV? thepeep says hi. ;-)
ledebutant
I agree with you about my needing to juice things up a bit, Edge. I like to
dance and it sounds like you do, too. I'm really glad to hear that Mr.
perceptualvortex and I got you up and boogying. Hooray !
P.S. Still waiting on 'Like Rockets to Go."
futzpucker
I am so impressed by the production of this track. The ideas used were
very creative and completely successful. This moves very well, pulls the
listener in, and then delivers on the promise. Everything works, all the fx
on the vocals, all the synth sounds, the drum track, everything.
I can see why you are proud of this, Lisa. You have every reason to be.
And David has cemented himself as a top producer on this site with this
beautifully executed track.
Congratulations, you two.
perceptualvortex
Thanks so much, Patrick, I appreciate those super kind words; it means a lot to me coming from a producer like you--who consistently amazes me. I wanted to support Lisa's singing as well possible, so I'm glad you found the ideas and mix successful!

Ed Hannifin
...about this being about murder and dark and all that...
You'll have to explain that to me... Makes perfect sense to me as a sane
song. And I venture to say that my son has no idea of a murderous
subtext... Two innocents, we are...
You know, this is some exciting ear candy, and it really did get thepeep
dancing and exclaiming... I still find a great charm in the original, I
have to say, but I also love hearing David's mind applied to recreating
the world through musical production... I like the bright mandolin
line...
You know what I miss? the recurring synthy line... it's in here, but less
prominently... I thought that was as essential a quirky bit as the
calliopes in 'Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite'...
No question aboon it, though, this is The Year Of The Lisa...
Ed
perceptualvortex
Yes, I know what you mean, this really does make sense as a sane song too. Without knowing just how sinister Lisa is, it could just be a song about Sarah's garden. Of course, Sarah does seem a little concerned about evidence/footprints and missing people...
I'm glad this is ear candy to you, Ed, and it's always cool to get people dancing (playing drums is rewarding that way too!) I kind of miss that quirky synth line too... I know what you're saying. In fact, in converting this song to the dance genre it also loses some of the mystery that the slower pace suggested... I guess changing the feel of the song was inevitable here--and of course now I'm used to this new aesthetic applied to it. Thanks for listening, Ed, it's always great to hear from you!

Stun Nutz
You've got another full-bodied production here, PV... overall, it is still quite an enjoyable song. The are a couple things (I am in the mood to be critial!) that I am not sure of, however... the production, while rich, seems a little too much, I think. Some of the pulsing techno-embelleshments sound a little dated now and probably could have been toned down. Also, the beat was too plain and regular throughout. I guess I was looking for more twists and turns... like your other tracks, but perhaps done in a more subtle way (due to the reflective nature of this particular song). There you go! Feel free to tear my song up next time! Ha ha!!!
perceptualvortex
I do appreciate the critial comments when they're thoughtful, and yours always have a spark of truth. Ok, maybe more than a spark, haha! Yes, I know that I crowd perhaps too much into my productions. You won't believe it, but I did try for moderation, and I tore out many sounds and whole tracks while assembling this, with just that in mind. But you know, I can't help the busy-ness. The intent here was to make a true dance track, so I kept the beat simple intentionally and held back on twistiness, but I get what you're saying. So, thanks for your perceptive critiism, Eric, I appreciate that, and I look forward to your next song. ;-)

ha ha! Hey David, I said this to Lisa and I will say it to you as well...
Thanks for being a good sport. I keep coming back to MacJams because It's nice to know you can speak your mind when you feel like it and most people won't take it personally. Most of the time I don't feel like being critical because music is so subjective, but every once in a while it feels good to let it out.
I can't wait to see if you get critical with my next tune! Lord knows, there will be a lot to pick apart!!!
And as for YOU Mr. PV: you are amazing. I'm blown away by your mixes of
both this and Saturnine. Abundant kudos!
Be well!

Skilful arrangement. No wonder you're so rapt with this. It must be
amazing hearing a song you've written given this sort of treatment.
"birdseed, raspberries, poisoned weeds" - you could be describing my
garden at the moment. Love it!
illuminati
An incredible blending of talents. Love the composition work and Ledeb's
voice is so strong and confident. This tune definitely has the illuminati
stamp of approval.
dreadmon
I hadn't heard the original or the remix before hearing this and it's quite an oceanic experience, audio-wise. I love the textures and your voice sounds very strong here. The seeming randomness of the lyrics is actually very fetching. What a groove - you guy work well together!
Komrade K
Really glad I checked this out. Lyrically disturbing however the music
seems to go someplace else, somewhere a bit trippy...These two strands
constantly separate and intertwine but end up making perfect sense.
I particularly like your voice on this track - the production and mix is
wonderful too, managing to be both 'full on' and subtle at the same time!
A might achievement

I always enjoy collaborating with you Lisa, and even though this was a lot of work, it was worth the Mr. title from you. In The Garden is one of my oldest MacJams favorites, and I really enjoyed taking it out for a stroll to the rave. It had a good time there.
I hope I passed the audition--I'd really like to mix with your lovely vocals again sometime. Thanks again for the opportunity!
like allways this realy grabs you nice feel. You just want to float all the
way through. great mix also I can see all the work that went into this
excellent keep it coming
echoroom
Fantastic work here guys - I'm listening to this on headphones and the
mix on this sounds fantastic. Love the little recurring musical motifs,
but the whole thing has such a feeling of space and movement that it
just pulls you along. Putting this together with your sweet, laid back
voice and a fairly dark, introverted lyrics works really well - not only is
it right up my street, it's parked in my garage.
So often electronic music is stuck with 'baby, I love you lyrics' - what
you're doing here adds a great new dimension to this.
So, the album is out when??
Steve
The Infinites
This is brilliant - I love the almost Middle Eastern groove that PV has
added, as well as the overall production.
And, as always, your voice !!!!! GOOSEBUMPS!!
Thanks for this one; a treat!
Jim
Nice, nice mix David! just builds along, take off, float and glide - like a magic carpet to carry me away from doldrum.
Open the squeaky hinged box, the aviary habitants fly.... - what escapes is what sends chills down and up my spine
What super sweet voice you have on you Lisa. Don't know what else to say, but how enjoyable can it get than all of this?
. - Harold
TEXASFEEL
Very very cool!

about dark topics always bring a smile to my face. Juxtaposition is the
spice of life, eh?
I can't say I've heard the original, but this track is schlick.
Have you thought of an industrial remix for this tune? It could swing
like a bag of bricks on the end of a six-foot rope.
chugga chugga, (the sound of a shaking groove thing)

It was really cool how you wrote the lyrics. You have such a wonderful
voice. I really enjoyed listening to this. PV did an absolutely amazing job
mixing this.
I'm running over the Hills....

The music is rolling off them!!
Anyway, what a solid production. Your vocals are very professional.
Beautifully done.
Dave, Great Job! The music speaks for itself!
Can't wait to hear some more from you guys!

Great track you guys! This shines on so many different levels. Ledeb's
voice (as fine as I've heard it), the swirling instrumentation of the
backing tracks. yeah sure it gets my toes tapping but it generates
some real depth with its flowing ambience. It provokes it own genre.
Dance Ambient Vibe Enchantment. D.A.V.E for short.

Interesting. Such a strange mix of genres and lyrics. I adore your

pop friendly and well produced. I'm not exactly connecting with the
lyrics, though the images are lovely...much love, kelli

Drew Kopr
Yeah, I love this...my new car will be delivered in about one month, and this tune is going into my first drive mix!!! Great stuff!!!
Willywagga
What an enormous sound, your voice sounds a bit like Cait O'Riordain
from the Cranberries but yours is gentler and more appealing to my ears.
I feel like running out to my garden in the rain and wind and reaching for
great clumps of of runner beans, jasamine, and Bougainvillea and holding
them to my chest and thanking them for doing what they do.
ledebutant
What a lovely comment, Willy, but watch out for the guy behind the shed. ;-)
chikoppi
I can't help but think of Madonna's "Ray of Light" as I listen. That's a
positive reflection for sure. The break is terrific, with the sliced vocal
rhythms. This is a flavor of dance I can get behind. The step synths are
tasteful and actually support the music. The various effects are all
tasteful and add to the song without sticking out.
Nice lyrics and great delivery! Ethereal and melodic.
Hectorious
I really enjoyed your vocals on this song! Cool tune if you ever need a
bass player to lay down some low end just let me know.
I'll do my best to complement your song.
Thank You for Sharing;0}
Sweet voice, I like the production on your vocals very well done, love the
lyrics, fun song!

Your fan bus is full but is there room for one more on board?
wonderful and perfect production that works with the lyrics despite the
fact that the whole idea of garden songs is not in this genre. The fact
that the two opposing ideas work well together is wonderful.

you have a bit the fans =)
Great song!___ok dude!
mikkinylund
I LOVE this! The mix of genre's with today's more common beats. This is
strong, very powerful and thick, but with your clean and contrast rich
voice, it works so well. The lyrics are AWESOME! This is poetry and NOT
weird at all. I can see may stories lay hidden between the lines, depending
on how you which to read it. The overall mix is brilliantly mastered as
well. Great work, GREAT! Like I mentioned, this has many things in it; to
me, with my background, I can even smell some Simple Minds, but hey,
that's of course me. Thank you very much!

What a cool track - vocals are quite amazing and the production is superb. Reminded me in a weird way of "hole in my shoe" -Def one of the best tracks I've heard on MJ.

i hope you like Dub Star - cuz this is very much like them - only much
better! what a fantastic tune. love the opening fx of the shop door
opening. the backwards echo on your voice, the tasteful electronic fx here
and there, the lyrics are absolutely eery: i feel like i should understand
them, yet somehow just as i feel i grasped some detail it slips away... very
nice.

Youra
... to add to what has been already said. Fantastic song and production. I immediatly downloaded it. I just find strange to classify it "Dance-club". No matter, anyway. Who cares about boxes ?
ledebutant
Thanks Youra, so much for your kind words. Genre really is always hard to choose. What do you think might be a better one? I've wondered if it's more Pop, myself.
Youra
It is very strange that all these sub-categories have grown up with the rebirth of electro music in the nineties. Strange because modern music is really a cross-over of everything, from country music to all kind of computerized stuff, that makes exactly quite impossible to categorize. We should sparkle a reaction ! Stop making genre !
Just kidding. Pop is fine for me. Carry on making your great music.
yuriwebboy

... altough I wouldn't have looked at this little treasure under "Dance-Club". It reminds me a bit of the Alternative band "Philip Boa and the Voodooclub" (take it as a compliment ... I hope I doesn't repeat myself). I enjoyed your kind of singing here ... keep up.
guido11
La trovo semplicemente godibile.
complimenti!!!

This song works SO well for your voice. You don't have that "diva" thing going on, so taking your pristine style and floating it that joyous rhythm just makes it all sound so damn effortless and great. Super easy to listen to. I'm in love.
Thanks!

Happy fun and bouncy murder song! Just what I was looking for! I love the juxtaposition of harmonic mood to lyric - contrast is king, and can be quite biting, so remember to wear gloves...
This is yummy and big.
Excellent production and a lovely vocal...
(By the way Miss Ledebutant, when are you going to turn off those green eyes? I'm trying to work here...)
Boris the Bull
came across this one in the 2006 MacJams Retrospective collection. i understand why it was presented for that collection - it's simply outstanding! the vocal mix is perfect and the movement of the piece is just wonderful! there's nothing to say about this piece except "wow."
this is one i am going to enjoy and treasure for a long time! thank you!
ledebutant
Thank you for such a generous, generous comment! It was a ton of fun doing this with David and I think he was at the top of his game when he was putting this together, absolutely.
Thanks too, for your great idea for the retrospective. It was a terrific idea for people to nominate their own track, avoids a lot of hurt feelings and accusations of favoritism. I hope it becomes an annual tradition!

Nice to move around in styles. Thanks again.

Really enjoyed this song, kinda gave me a Natalie Merchant type feel at times, very groovy synths and keys.
ledebutant
Bless you for not calling me Debby!
That's the first time anyone has compared me to Natalie Merchant and that's a huge compliment, so thank you!
MJG
My younger sister bought me a live Natalie Merchant CD a few years ago, love her, San Andreas Fault, wow, some great music. Your doin' just fine, glad to comment on your tunes.
1rwhite1
Lisa, this is an incredibly addictive song. Very uplifting in all the right ways. I must say, you have one of the most unique voices on this website, and it's such a pleasure to hear the detail and passionate musicianship you put into this piece. I'm glad I met you!
LightTronics
This is tight. I like what you did to it. Weather this is Dance/Club or not, isn't THAT huge of a deal. This IS a remix but personally I would consider dance or club to be more electronic and intense. I have noticed everyone has a different perspective on Dance/Club. Like, I have noticed that people who do more rock or lighter music tend to think more if it has a 4 on the floor beat and synths its Dance/Club. But, that's just me. Anyway, man, I'm rambling on here. So, ya. I really l like it and it sounds really professional. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback about the genre, Lighttronics. It's really rough coming from outside the electronic genres and trying to make sense of what goes where. There are so many distinctions that aren't always clear.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the music, though, and I appreciate you sharing what you know about the genre. It helps.

A great driving song. On an unrelated note, it gives new meaning to the line "He died in a bizarre gardening accident."
Well done. Your songwriting is fab.
