A lot of the time the monitors and the setting of the monitor system makes a
big difference in how the mix sounds. Poor speakers (monitors) that have too
much bottom end may result in a thin mix on many other systems. Monitors
that are too bright or course may cause you to mix some of the top end out
to make the mix sound good on your monitors. I listen on a whole bunch of
different systems to get an idea of what my mixes sound like. The AKG
phones that I have hooked to my G5, JBL monitors in my studio and a
different set in the audio lab where I work, Genelec monitors in the TV studio
where I work, Apple earbuds, two different car stereo systems. I have learned
what sounds good on all those systems and use that knowledge when I mix.
It also helps that I listen to each piece about a million times.!!!!
I also like to compare what I do with some things that I admire by other
artists and compare what my mixes sound like compared to them. It helps me
keep a reference in my head.
Good luck with your future mixes.
