Three Key Round

Description
The chord progression is

|: D / / C | Bb / / Ab | F# / / E :|

If you modulate this down a major third, you'll find that it's the same thing, just shifted in time. Ditto for modulating down another major third. Since three major third intervals equal an octave, this closes the modulation loop.

D / / C | Bb / / Ab | F# / / E ...

Bb / / Ab | F# / / E | D / / C ...

F# / / E | D / / C | Bb / / Ab ...

The song goes like this:

After the piano establishes the cycle, the flute comes in with a melody. Then a little later the marimba comes in, shifted over a measure and modulated down a third. Finally, the horns come in, shifted over another measure and modulated down another third.

It's sort of like a musical Mobius strip.

Great idea
Love the way the system works. Did you back into it from experimentation
- or did the system come to you first? I've always been fascinatedd by
repitition and decay/growth.

system
i made this thing up long ago. i suspect it started from the whole tone sequence
of chords. six downward whole tones fit into an octave, so you can close the
loop there. then, if i recall correctly, i noticed that from the perspective of any
particular chord, all the succeeding chords are the same, relatively speaking.
that led to making up some sort of melodic thing for one of the ways of looking
at it. immediately followed by transposing/delaying it to form the other two
parts... but it was long ago, i might only be confabulating...

Nice...
just as I was thinking "Well, this is getting kind of repiti..."---I was
pleasantly surprized. Like the others though, I feel it's a tad too short.
Instead of ending it a change-up follwed by a return to the main theme
would have been nice. Still, I like the piece over-all.

Be well!

a bit short...
thanks Amagi - and by the way, thanks too to egobandit vbluesky and bud..

i guess i put this under experimental because there's really only one musical
idea here. a real song would need more substance for sure. i just like the
mobius strip concept is all...

I've always enjoyed rounds...
...but haven't yet mustered the courage to attempt one. Nice sounds. Melody has a (medieval-like?) quality I just can't quite place. Kudoas!

Be well!

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]

Experimental music is any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is. There is an overlap with avant-garde music. John Cage was a pioneer in experimental music and defined and gave credibility to the form. As with other edge
