Description:
I thought I should contribute something again, so I've taken a break from recording my EP to put down a rough demo of this song.

I wrote this for my cousin Matt when his first child, Charlie, was born.

This is pretty rough but you'll get the idea.

Lyrics:
Charlie was running late tonight
And everyone was waiting for news that she'd arrived
We haven't met her yet, but she is one of us alright
It's all good tonight

"She's beautiful" he said, looking at his baby
One of a million times
You're beautiful he thought, for giving me this angel
Who's landed in my arms

Charlie, she looked around the room
She didn't know the faces but she knew she was home
Everything had changed, but somehow it all seemed familiar
She could recognise their love anywhere

"She's beautiful" he said, looking at his baby
One of a million times
You're beautiful he thought, for giving me this angel
Who's landed in my arms

Charlie, she didn't understand what all the fuss was about
The burden of anxiety was lifted away
By someone so small and innocent

"She's beautiful" he said, looking at his baby
One of a million times
You're beautiful he thought, for giving me this angel
Who's landed in my arms

Pretty rough! - pull the other one! &mdash 09/26/06 - 02:10:57 AM
Mate, this is a lesson in tight, close harmony, tight lyrics and vox in
general. It is yet another one of yours which could grow way beyond
this already wonderful incarnation! Shades of The Whitlams and
Crowded House, but with your own inimitable vocal and lyrical stylings.
This will have people heaping superlatives at you - allow me to be the
first - excellent!!
Neil

Thanks Neil. And thanks so much for thinking this was worthy of a forum
posting. I appreciate that. The Whitlams, eh? I like that!

Hey Nolan! &mdash 09/26/06 - 06:49:35 AM
I was just going to email you... "Supermarket" popped up on the iPod
during my walk home last night, and I was once again marveling at
your songcraft and performance/production chops...

Yeah, this is less produced than that, but it's very moving, very
immediate... I imagine that you'll get it even tighter at some point, but
it certainly comes across now...

I always appreciate your melodies, and the spots where you use
harmony...The lyrics, for me anyway, capture that 'new father' vibe,
that sense of wonder and gotta-count-the-toes-and-look-in-the-
eyes-again amazement that happens...

Nice graphic, too...

G'day Ed. Thanks for that. I definitely hope to do a full version of this one
day. But in the meantime, I love that you can post songs here in their early
stages and get ideas from people's comments. I still get a kick out of
thinking that I pop up on your iPod!

Multiple recording of your voice.
It is wonderful.
The sound of the guitar is also beautiful.
It is beautiful.

Squeaaaaaal!! &mdash 09/26/06 - 09:56:55 AM
Thank goodness Neil posted about this in the forums. A new Nolan
track is never to be missed and this is no exception.

As Neil noted, the harmonies are just incredible. It's the first thing I
thought as the song started, "Wow! Nolan just hears the nicest
harmonies". The multiple voices work really well and make things nice
and rich and lush without distracting from the main vocal...AH! and you
just hit the key change...I love key changes.

Somthing about this reminds me of Hey Jude. I can hear how the
arrangement would fill out with bass and drums...and for some reason
I'm picturing a flute, too...somthing in the high and squeaky family at
least. For now though, the demo is terrific and could stand on it's own.
There's something so nice about the emotion and intimacy captured
with a voice and a guitar.

Okay, back to the EP because I'm dying to get one.

Thanks heaps, Lisa. I love the flute idea. Know any good flautists with
GarageBand? I've started a few recordings of this song, using different
sounds, but nothing I've actually finished.

The other day, I had the morning off from work, and I sat down to try and get
back into the other songs I've been working on, but it just wasn't happening.
So I thought, I'll just record something for MacJams. I'm glad I did. No
wonder people get hooked on this website; there's nothing like posting a
song, trying not to look at it for 24 hours, and then sitting down to read the
comments. I love it!

But you're right, I must get back to the CD...

Those harmonies is just like how the beatles would do them. You show songwriting skills that belong in the top league.

Thanks so much, Thoddi. The Beatles definitely inspired my love of
harmonies, and songwriting for that matter. I'm rapt that their influence is
being heard with this one. Cool.

Ah, Yes &mdash 09/26/06 - 03:00:34 PM
Ah, Yes. Good choice. This is probably the best way to do it.

Hearing your guitar and your voice is sher joy and this is a perfect way to
do it. Nothing more needed.

Sooooo wonderful to have a new song from you again!
This one is a gem.
Thank you!

Thank you, Sir Curry. I know we started work on a version of this many
months ago; I still hope to do it one day with your magical fingerpicking. But
in the meantime, I'm glad you enjoyed this demo. Thanks for your kind
comments.

What a delicious song... really fresh structure, gorgeous lyrics, really
strong/powerful harmonies, great singing, clean recording... I hope your
cousin was touched by this... wonderful tribute to the jubilance and awe
of a new life.

Thanks Drakonis. I'm stoked you enjoyed it. To be honest, my cousin's never
heard the song. I think Charlie's about five years old now. I've been patiently
waiting all this time for a refined recording to give them. I'll probably give it
to Charlie for her 21st birthday!

effective lyrics &mdash 09/26/06 - 05:34:01 PM
and the harmonies are likewise excellent. This comes across as 'fresh'
rather than 'rough' in my estimation.

Yeah, it's been bugging me all day... &mdash 09/26/06 - 09:23:08 PM
Can't just compare your stuff to Neil Finn/Crowded House anymore...

I'm hearing a lot of Beatles of the "If I Fell" sort of flavor..."Yes It Is"..."And
I Love Her"...

You have that hint of burr in your voice that makes the doubling sound
that much thicker...

Awesome! I can't believe that: I've always LOVED the harmonies in If I Fell
and Yes It Is. In fact, I would say If I Fell was possibly THE song that most
inspired my love of harmonies in the early days. That is so cool, Ed. Thanks.

Beautifully sentimental &mdash 09/27/06 - 03:14:03 PM
The great lyrics just soar with the incredibally tight harmonies. It's just a
wonderful tune all the way around.

And good luck on the EP. Can't wait to hear it. (Hopefully you'll be able to
make it available to us here in the States.)

Very heartfelt &mdash 09/27/06 - 06:13:37 PM
Very nice song. Anyone who's had a child can identify with the emotion in
this song. Wonderful job. I like this a little rough--or perhaps a better
way to say it is spare. A full production would make it less personal, I
think.

You could try to polish this sweet piece, but I suspect it will be difficult to retain its immediacy.

Listening to it now, it feels like it was written on the spot - like you are standing in the post-delivery room at the hospital.

I don't know how you improve on that : >
