Description:
Another old one of mine re-vamped. Inspired by a weird foreign film I saw in my youth.

Abstract art courtesy of my youngest daughter Rebecca (age 5).

Early mix - no bass!

Originally performed by my old band "Nobody Knows" in oh .. around '93-'94. This is dedicated to them:

Lead vocals:Justine/Jerry
Keyboards & b.vox: Amanda
Drums: Mathew
Bass: James
Guitars & b.vox: APB

Lyrics:
Come on
Da .. la dee da ..
Yeah,
Woo hoo

v1
So long since the good times have come around,
If we could be happy,
So much more than I ever could ask for ..

Takin' our time,
Doin' it right,
Once in a lifetime,
I long to hear you say ..

Chorus
"So say you don't love me ...
'Cos if you can't, you do .."

v2
So why do I find I'm on my own again?
There must be someone ..
Is that too much for anyone to ask for?

Lookin' for you,
Playin' it right,
Tied up inside,
I long to hear you say ..

v3
So it's goodbye to the good times,
I'm on my own ..
I can't find someone ..
To hold and love and be all I ever wished for ..

Lookin' for you,
Pleasin' myself,
Not lookin' for you,
Don't need no one else

i agree with &mdash 10/01/06 - 01:26:32 PM
caroline...the intro is too long for a pop song..(this is coming from me,
king of the long intro!)...but for this tune it was confusing...just made
me wait for the nice vocals just a bit too long...

your production is spot on here, and this is a nice tune...with the right
bass part it will be very effective...

nice stuff

I agree .. the intro (which is in the song later anyway) will be removed for
more 'radio edit' kind of thing - it was never the arrangement for the
original - that always started with the first verse.

Heck - I didn't really even know to put it under Pop genre at all ..

brilliant &mdash 10/01/06 - 01:42:55 PM
What an energy! I love the little breaks, keeping the lister fascinated from start to end. Such a neat production as well. I feel the singer is sometimes a bit unsure on the high notes, but this is just a senseless little quibble compared to the overall brilliant vocal performance in this song. A download for sure. - Walter

I felt I misled you a bit in the lid Walter .. this is me re-doing everything, as
usual, unless credited in the song title.. so the high note shy vocalist is me .. lol

and your right .. I will tighten up those bits in v2. Some bits are better than
others ... so I know I can do it ..

PS &mdash 10/02/06 - 04:23:47 AM
I've also since noticed there is something funky going
on in the recording at the "So why .." line and the last
verse is 'badly' sung .. very flat "you"'s .. doh ..

Haven't heard... &mdash 10/01/06 - 01:53:21 PM
...some nice pop rock in a bit...

Caroline's right, of course, the intro goes on too long for a pop song
(at least unless you had, I dunno, John Entwhistle playing some French
horn in the middle of it or somthing...), but at least it's not an ODIOUS
long intro...it's a fun, catchy, well recorded and very tuneful long
intro...

Song's great, the singing's great, and I would only suggest that maybe
in the sonic spectrum a little more oomph in the bass end would
complete the picture. As is, though, this'd sound great coming over car
speakers...

I think the intro... &mdash 10/01/06 - 03:34:46 PM
...is just fine. Actually, I really liked it. It's unusual for this type of song,
with a feel good vibe and all that, but it didn't bother me at all. I think
this song has considerable hit potential. The vocal could be little bit
more in front, perhaps it could use a little polishing up in terms of
equalization. Amazing, the sort of stuff you find on this site. Thanks
for posting this.

I'll will secumb to opinion to shorter for v2, add bass and light drums on the
verses, make vocal corrections .. but I probably will still post an unmastered
version and wait until everything is in before I try to EQ a bit better during
mastering. I don't know if this is a good approach as I am new to mastering.

In fact, I have only posted one thing I have tried mastering .. "Where there's
a will" and I have since got a bit better at recording vocals. Living and learning ..

I'm a big Kansas fan so I'll try not to go off on a Kansas tangent. I agree
with pretty much all that's been posted so far. This one needs to be in my
car on my many road trips.

Kudos all around!

.. nothing makes me more proud than to know people have downloaded and will listen as they are driving around, going about their daily buisness ... creates a swell
picture in my head ..

Do you know, I must confess I have never heard Kansas ..
in fact it wasn't until you commented I realised that Vic
was talking about a band and not the place .. I'm such a
nonce. Easily, rectified .. please send me a note with
some of your favourite titles and I'll give them a listen.

. I thought you'ld like the "woo hoo"s ;o) ... this
extended, "live" arrangement, remix (!?) was an attempt
to add 2mins or so onto this song .. so I can get my butt
playing live in SL faster .. and not have write another
2 minute song .. lol

Looking forward to the finished product &mdash 10/02/06 - 08:43:36 AM
Some very nice moments, but in my ears the intro is much too long,
unless a different level of soloing, etc., is layered in. Also, the vocals
seem too forward. I like the organ, the use of guitars, the minimalist
piano. You solo vocals track is honest and evocative, altho some times
during your harmonized chorus a pitch problem emerges. There is a
demo feel to the track, unfinished, as your comments suggest. I look
forward to your finished product.

Thanks &mdash 10/02/06 - 12:12:24 PM
for your honest critique - yup so far it's an unmastered, imcomplete thang -
I'll correct the vocal mistakes in v2, as I add a bass track and most likely
go back to the version that starts from 1:30 in (ie. v1 and skips the intro) ..
I'll just have to "Woo Hoo" in the 'return' instead .. lol

Crying out! &mdash 10/04/06 - 02:49:43 AM
Lots of energy in this, but as has already been said - far too long an
intro. With some serious editing this would be an excellent radio song.
While this edit would definitely work live, it kind of goes far too long in
the recorded context (says he who rarely produces anything less than 5
minutes). Shades of Yes in here as well. Excellent performance, both
vocals and instruments - this is crying out for a strong bass line.

for your continued support. I'm new to Drums on Demand (DoD) drum loops
and started using them as
a) I heard the results of good use here at MJ
b) it will hopefully speed up my production (doing midi drums is slow) and so
far has.
c) the drum loop quality is very good and consequently makes a huge
boost to the overall sound standard.
d) it's a fairly flexible system of doing drum tracks

Now, hopefully the makers of DoD will see this and send me some freebies ..
lol.

All me .. &mdash 10/05/06 - 10:14:25 AM
GB and DoD .. all newly recorded just last weekend,
~13 years after the song was written and last performed.
So I might have sung it in a younger way perhaps since that's how I remember it - but I think it's true of my voice when I try singing higher I start to sound more
'teenager/boyish' - can't help it...

Glad you liked it.
