Eternity Calls

Description
Inspired by Ejh I decided to also drop some stuff from previous musical lives on MJs. This is a recording of my old band, John Doe, which I had with my friends Okke and Etienne. Unfortunately this is the only reasonable recording we ever got together; we had quite a few nice songs. This one was based on what I think is a very interesting pingerpicking riff that Etienne came up with. It's basically just three guitars and three voices; Etienne sings the chorus lead. The first part of the solo is me, the second is Okke. Enjoy!

Lyrics
When daylight comes
time keeps flowing on

I am so homesick
for the lands of my youth
Don't you know that time
passes slow there
friendly and smooth

When evening's there
I'm not aware

I'm looking for landmarks
I don't know where I am
I can trust you can lead me
friendly and smooth

When darkness falls
eternity calls

marvelous song
What I hear is some great guitar playing, wonderful chord progressions, a very neat vocal perfomance with some more than pleasing harmonies. What I enjoy is a brlilliant overall production. What I feel is joy and passion, happiness and sadness. To put all that in one song... a deep bow. And a download it is for me. Heerlijke muziek van mijn noorderbuur Denny :-) - Walter

Not yer typical folkie thing...
This reminds me of some folk psychedelia from the 60's and 70's... It's
steady and it's right, and yet it has this quality of almost going off the
tracks a little... The sound is very youthful and very much alive... I like
how the guitar overtones chime together... You mention three mics,
but I'd almost bet that one of the guitars was taken direct from a pick-
up... maybe I'm wrong...There's a sound in there that I usually don't
like, but here it contributes to that chiming quality and it sounds great.

Into the iPod it goes, with thanks. Nice slice of history that gets to live
on, Denny...

Sharp ears
you have Ed. Yes, you are right: the three mics were for the vocals. Two
of the guitars were semi-acoustic and went directly into the recording
device. But the other one indeed had a pickup. This was out of necessity;
we only had two semi-acoustics. I do not generally prefer the pickup but
it works out nicely in this tune I think. And about the almost-off-the-
track quality of this song; we always gravitated towards a somewhat
psychedelic style. Not really a surprise, given that Etienne is a fan of
Genesis, Okke is the sort of guy who enjoys Magna Carta, and my
favorite band is Pink Floyd... Anyway, thanks for the nice words and it's
good to know that the song has found a place in an iPod!

Thanks
for the comment, glad you liked the tune. I don't know the name of the
scale the solo is in but I enjoy playing it (in A it plays: A-Bflat-Csharp-
D-E-G).

Nice riff
The vocals have a nice - oh I guess youthful - quality. The same riff
played by three guitars in unison is interesting, too.

Thanks
for commenting on this. Actually, the guitars don't play the same thing.
It's slightly different in notes and timing, which causes the sort of delay-
like quality. Also the chorus parts are entirely harmonic, in that part we
don't play the same notes at all.

Well
Crafted song. Reminds me of cat stevens of old. Nice harmony vocal
parts. Nice guitar solo and nice choice of scalerun and bends.Truly nice
song. A song of longing.

Cat Stevens
also figures prominently in the list of some of our members' influences.
Thanks for the compliment, Tatin. Best, Denny

Hi Denny!
Very trippy little song here - lovely harmonies, nice picking - someone
has a great voice, reminds me a lot of Steve Winwood, This reminds
me so much of Traffic, and it's not just Steve's voice. The guitar parts
are very well thought out and go really well with the vocals. I too have
been inspired by Ed to put up a song from the archives - just waiting
for one last person to approve it.
I like it.

Steve Winwood...
...that must be Etienne's vocal. He'll be very happy with the comparison,
I'll make sure he receives the compliment. Thanks, Jiguma.

such sweet
melodies. Very compelling. Nice job. Nice fingerpicking. I love the
playful little rift in there. I don't connect too much with the lyrics, but
the music is terrific. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Those lyrics
are the product of Etienne's brain. I don't have a clue what his intentions
were but for me they are about life... The verses represent youth, middle
age, and death - and inbetween there is longing for how things used to
be.

A good one and....
...that guitar riff gives the song a cool vibe! A little Fleetwood macish! I
can almost feel Stevie Nicks coming in on a verse....even without her it's
cool. Film like feeling. Trés cool.

Fleetwood mac...
we used to play a few of their old songs... can't be a coincidence. I enjoy
playing that guitar riff a lot - although it sounds laid back, it's a pretty tough
fingerpicking pattern (for me at least) which keeps it interesting.

Nice sounds
Lots of nice stuff. Cool mesh of guitars, cool recording. Like the unison
of the guitars and the vocals are very well done!

Thanks for sharing
