Description:
My rant... or "how I looped the ****ing loop" (to quote a line from the movie, Shirley Valentine).
I have been wanting to do a song in which the music was composed entirely from loops. Here it is.
And I have been wanting to do a song that gave a nod to two of the great soul brothers of the sixties... James Brown & Wilson Pickett. This is an attempt to capture something of the sound they helped usher in.
Song Art: Discord throwing the apple amongst the Gods.
Ceiling above the Great Staircase
Louis Chéron c. 1695
oil on plaster.
For RC and his brother.
Lyrics:
Bring It Up...
Verse 1:
Don't care about your jivin' wind
Don't care about your smack
Don't like it when you slam the man,
Doing it behind his back.
Don't care about your high falutin'
Don't care about your claims
You really think you're all of that?
Get back, better check your game.
Refrain:
Let me catch some harmonizing
Throw me some sweet tone
'Bout time you put it in a song
Get back, now bring it home.
Verse 2:
Don't care about no endless spiel
It's all a tired rant
Pontificate? Reciprocate!
Sometimes I think you can't
Beating on your brother
Don't care at all for this
Invective is infective
All you serving up is Diss
Refrain
Bridge
Verse 3:
Patronizing, scandalizing
Slagging your only tool?
High-handed low end haughtiness
Whatcha take me for a fool?
Don't care about that wieldy axe
It's something just to grind
Lay it down, then pick it up
And see what you might find.

So funky it gets me laughing... &mdash 10/06/06 - 06:49:13 AM
Hey, Jack, to my ears, this really, really, really works...
It's fun, it's got funk, it's got impact, it's got a message...
Okay, the bad news is that I don't think it sounds like James Brown or
Wilson Pickett... The good news is that sounding like Jack in a soul-
funk vein is pretty good...
I like this. Good choice of artwork, too. Matches the lyrics welll...
You've got a certain subtle wit about you, Jack...

Hey there... &mdash 10/06/06 - 09:22:05 AM
Well, it's not suppose to sound like James or Wilson... just to capture
something of the soul/funk sound that they ushered in during the sixties. I'd
never claim to sound like them. Glad you like this and thanks, as always, for
your comments and thoughts.

I realized my last reply sounded kind of short. Didn't mean to. You wrote above "Hey, Jack, to my ears, this really, really, really works... It's fun, it's got funk, it's got impact, it's got a message..." That's how if was for me. A lot of fun and I was prertty amazed at how well pasting loops of various instruments, and fiddling with them, actually worked. As far as the message... just my rant :)
Thanks again Ed!

Good Lord! &mdash 10/06/06 - 05:48:18 PM
This is a side of you I've never heard---let alone thought was possible.
This is flat out amazing. The groove is great and the horns are funky, but
the real treat here is your vocal delivery. 10's straight across brother! Be
well! [ Reply to This ]
Funky horns/ vocals.... &mdash 10/06/06 - 07:50:15 PM
Well, I went into my Way-Back machine and visited my old soul/funk group
"The Twilights" ('68-'70) in the Philadelphia area. We had a dynamite band
(3 white guys and 3 black guys), especially when it came to James Brown.
Well I grabbed some inspiration from horns and snatched a bit of our
singer's attitude... came back to the present and had some fun. Glad you
liked this. I wasn't sure how it would go over.
Thanks.

Git back Jack! &mdash 10/06/06 - 07:11:17 PM
How cool, Jack does funk.. I love the horns. Great arrangement, fun
lyrics, nice harmony, too. And it's all loops? You did good, you did real
good. :-) [ Reply to This ]
All loops... &mdash 10/08/06 - 10:48:01 AM
It kind of surprised me also the way this ended up sounding. All these loops
were freebies available to anyone through different spots on the web. A little
tweaking with the GB editting and effects and whoa... I got me a band! : )
Thanks for
listening. cheers...

OK, Dr. D . . . &mdash 10/06/06 - 11:12:39 PM
Why does this song make me think of Woody Harrelson?
And, I agree with Ed, um, do you even own a Wilson Pickett album? :)
OK, all joking aside, actually, the arrangement is amazingly faithful to
the genre. It's clear you have played this style before. And I can hear
some James Brown influences.
A nice change of pace for you and a nice job on this. [ Reply to This ]

Good call Feter... &mdash 10/08/06 - 10:55:09 AM
I hadn't made that connection...
Yes the hammond is a signature Sly Stone sound. You never know where
these loops come from.... the change in the middle was what sold me on
this song also. When I found the loops to create this bridge part I knew
that sealed the deal. That put it solidly in the funk/soul category.
different strokes for different folks....

Sweet soul music &mdash 10/08/06 - 09:29:40 AM
Fun tune. It definitely grooves like a M..F... It has the required breakdown;
now all that's missing is for the singer to shout "Give the drummer
some!". He definitely deserves it. -- Victor. [ Reply to This ]
I like that line.... &mdash 10/09/06 - 01:15:45 PM
"Give the drummer some!" I should have worked that into the song with a drum riff. Thanks for stopping in and giving this tune a listen.

Jack -I like this version of you. &mdash 10/09/06 - 08:17:00 AM
While there's nothing like having us live hacks playing along to your
tunes, It must be nice to have everyone in the band actually under
control :) Let me begin by saying that I love what you've done.
Sometimes I feel a bit as though it's all a bit too precise. It would be
nice to hear the drums rock out some more, and maybe have
Hectorious in there to provide some real funk (the bass is very low in
the mix - or doesn't have much bottom in it). Other than that, no nits
- a very nice day's work at the office!!

Control over the band... &mdash 10/11/06 - 11:51:15 AM
Yeah, amazing. These band members showed up on time for the recording sessions and never griped! Although like you said, they are rigidly too precise. I kept trying to get them to loosen up a bit... but nooooo, they said that's not how they do things.
Thanks Neil.

Vox and loops &mdash 10/09/06 - 04:48:37 PM
Hey Harold. A bit of a departure from my usual fare. The vocals are two separate takes sung all the way through. All I did was to pan each of them a little to the left and right and add some effects. I hadn't inended to do that. I was going to just choose the best of the two, but I liked how they sounded together. Loopy, eh?
Thanks...

Super-Duper &mdash 10/09/06 - 06:18:18 PM
That's my favorite comment title when I hear stuff like this. Really great
stuff! What a nice bass sound, fat and friendly. I gotta get some of them
there loops stuff! My least favorite part is the horns, since they sound a
little off, probably due to the the key shift thing that loops do, and I could
easily do without them here. This really was sounding like KC and the
Sunshine Band to me. Isn't Garageband super-duper? [ Reply to This ]
Super-thanks... &mdash 10/12/06 - 03:39:59 PM
Most glad to hear you enjoyed this one, Jim. Super-duper glad in fact : )
I agree about the key-shift thing on the horns. They don't seem as credible
in the upper chord changes. Although, as Scott points out, they would've
sounded better by having them take up some more soundspace to the
left. All in all, a lot of fun... thanks again.

Jack has got a brand new bag.... Oooooowwww &mdash 10/11/06 - 10:26:55 AM
This is absolutley great... and you don't just throw it away in order to
do some funk... you took some real care and time on the lyric...
something I always appreciate... great job here Jack... one small
comment on the horns... the arrangment is great, but they don't seem
to occupy a beleivable space when panned hard right... you might find
a way to let some reverb or delay wash into the left speaker.. you can
create some spacial color that way [ Reply to This ]
Like a boomerang.... &mdash 10/11/06 - 10:42:29 AM
Heheh. Hey Scott. You know I just revisited the GBand file and came to the same conclusion as you on the hard right horns. And I did basically what you suggested. It does make a difference. I probably won't update it here at MJ, but I will put the newer version up in place of the original at a couple other sites.
By the way, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag is the signature song of James Brown for me. If that song had never been recorded, I never would have played in a band in the sixties. After a number of years on clarinet I had started fooling around on tenor sax. A friend who played organ in a soul band gave me the J.B. album with "Papa's..." He said learn Maceo Parker's sax solo and you can be in the band. Well, I did. That led to a number of years and 3 soul/motown bands playing tenor.
Thanks for stopping by and jogging my memory.

I had to look twice to see if I had got to the right place when this started playing:) Not quite what I expected to find... But what a nice treat it turned out to be. Great choice of loops to make this a complete groovy tune.
You sing this with soul and attitude. Good one Jack:) [ Reply to This ]
Wide swing voting &mdash 10/13/06 - 10:39:29 AM
This loop thing definitely seems to evoke some reactions from those who see little if any music creativity in their use. To see the number of lower votes that come in without so much as a comment. And then the swing in the other direction of the voting from those who leave comments. Just an observation. I more or less expected this to happen. [ Reply to This ]
Funky &mdash 03/19/07 - 06:56:34 PM
Like the basic groove and how those few funky syncopated parts fit together. But that bridge really steals the show. Nice. I'm always impressed when a song built from loops doesn't sound like a bunch of loops throw together. Good Job. [ Reply to This ]
