Nimble fingers
Gee, i wish I could play like you. Very beautiful and contemplative, with
an air of mystery.

no idea if i could actually play it again today...

Great Sound
Another good track. The XP-50 looks like a very flexible instrument. How
are you connecting it to the computer?

XP-50 interfacing
i've tried three ways so far - only 2 with success.

1. used the audio out from the XP-50 into my mac right into GarageBand. it
works, but there's no way of course to change the mix. ("True, Man" was done
that way...)

2. all the midi from the XP-50 sequencer goes out the MIDI-OUT port. i
recorded that directly into GarageBand via my MIDI/USB adaptor (which i did
for this song). somehow it all went into one MIDI channel. not sure if it's GB
or the XP-50. for this song it was OK - there was only one track. but for other
songs, they get blended (uselessly) into one channel.

3. i tried to read the SVQ files off the floppy for the XP-50. GB doesn't let me
drag it in. i need to find out the file format and convert it if possible into a
standard .mid file. then GB could let me drag it in - and keep the channels
separate. (i know that works, since i generated a multi-track .mid file a while
ago and GB nicely split it up into separate tracks - one for each channel)

--- and... thanks for listening!

XP-50 == old, but good
note that Roland XP-50 is pretty old tech.mine is at least 14 years old. i use
it
mostly only as a midi keyboard input for GB. the touch is very nice, but not like a
real piano (no little thoomp at the bottom of the keypress). i use the sustain
pedal and the bend controller a lot. GB understands those nicely.i've been
neglecting the excellent synthesizer in it. i recall liking the sequencer, but
with
GB and the pencil tool, i have no interest in using it now!

Midi and Audio Out
Did your audio out feed in stereo to GB? I tried that once and everything was on
one side. I may have a defective audio out :( Do you think I can get warranty
service on a keyboard bought used in 1994? LOL

I believe that GarageBand only records one track at a time, so your third method
may be your only way to get more complicated sounds off the XP

Anyway, it sounds like the XP-50 is still a useful controller. My keyboard has
piano feel but no pitch bend or other controls. I'll be listening

recording stereo?
i was very confused at first by the default setting in GB on this. i think it
comes up left side only or something goofy like that. open the track by
double clicking the left side main heading fro the track. the Track Info dialog
should pop up and be in Real Instrument, and if you look at the "Input:"
combo box, under the instrument selection boxes, it should say "Channel 1
& 2 (Stereo)" - if it doesn't, click the up/down arrow thingy and select stereo
there.

--- now, this assumes you have a real 1/8 inch stereo plug stuck in the back
of the computer. if not, you'll still only get one side (i think Left only).

-- my advice is experiment first. once you figure it out, then do some serious
work with it. otherwise you'll go crazy!!

thx
thank you very much. i'm glad you liked it. i keep wondering about changing it
around here and there, but i'm reluctant to do so, for fear of ruining it somehow.
i did add a little to the original recording: there is a marimba and tubular bells
added way in the background. sometimes they stand out just barely enough to
hear. i can't decide if that's a good thing to have added or not... what do you
think?

Feel free!
Without your lists... well, if you look at it from a positive viewpoint, just
feel free to do whatever you like! Playing the piano seems to be one good
thing spending your time doing. You do/did that very well! So, thanks for
a great listen!

Very nice
I'd say it's more contemplative than listless, but that's a minor nit.
Otherwise this is a wonderful improvisation (?). Thanks for the
explanation of the scale. When I hear "symmetric" I always think of scales
with the tritone in it, but I guess that's not necessary: a scale can have the
natural 4th and 5th degree in it and still be symmetric about the point in
between them. I like that there are the minor third intervals without this
piece sounding too stereotypically hungarian. -- Victor.

symmetry
thanks for your thoughtful comments. i see the mode (in D) as two pairs of
shapes kind of like: x**x (the D-Eb-F#-G, and the A-Bb-C#-D). yeah, the D is
used twice, but that's OK. it's a nice mode, there's a 4th and 5th, but there's also
parallel major chords: I and iib: D-F#-A and Eb-G-Bb, which is really unusual
sounding (to me anyway). also, you can use the interval from C# to Eb
functionally as a third, which is also rather cool.

Diminished third?
C# to Eb as a third? That *is* unusual, yes. That reminds me, in WTC I, the
C#min fugue has an interval E-B# which you clearly hear as a very harsh
diminished fourth, rather than a boring major chord. Theory is fun! -- Victor.

WTC I ?
dumb question: what does WTC I refer to? i kept meaning to ask and kept
forgetting to. sounds like something to listen to. (oh, and prepositions are a
terrible thing to end sentences with.)

yes, i improvised it, after working out a few motifs. i remember doing several

Great improv
you've got areally nice emotional flow going on here. very impressive
skills and production. unlike many of us - it seems you can really play.
thanks for a nice treat.

thanks
thanks very much bud for the kind compliment! yes, i can play some things, but
there's loads of stuff i can't play tho.there's a strange two edged sword
here: it's pretty quick to record what you can play, but then you're limited to
what you're capable of playing. on the other hand, using the pencil tool, or other
methods like writing programs, frees you to create lots of stuff that you could
never ever play (only your imagination is the limit there) - but it's so tediously
slow that way. i wish there were other i/o devices into our computers (like some
of that stuff MediaLab has done).

Down at Smokey Joe's
Ok, it's not really cocktail jazz, but it's much more mainstream than what I'm used to from you.

Very enjoyable!
