Description:
Ed Hannifin (Ejh) has been uploading stacks from the vault holding his earlier works, and, not to be outdone, I decided to post this.

"Dark Nights" is one of my favourites from my time as bass player with the somewhat under-rated "Rusty Dusty Brothers" - a Sydney country-rock band from the first half of the 70s.

This song was written by Joe Cannon (who also plays rhythm guitar and sings the lead vocal). Other members on this track are: Peter Garrety (mandolin and harmony vocal); Roger Ilott (Telecaster with palm pedal); Warren Spark (drums) and yours truly on bass. I recently met up with Joe and Peter and am in email contact with Warren and Roger - after a break of 30 years! Seeing Roger in a few weeks.

Although I didn't write it or sing, my impact (apart from the bass) is mostly in the arrangement.

This was recorded at a rehearsal on a 4-track reel to reel (mixed live) by Bryan, our trusty gofer. This version has been stored on a cassette tape in my dusty collection for 30 years or more!

PHOTO: Peter; me; Joe (in front); Roger; Warren.

Hope you find it amusing!

Lyrics:
After considerable personal effort, here are the lyrics :)

Dark Nights
© 1975 Joe Cannon

Dark nights and the clouds are low
And the signs are bad wherever I go
Hitting the big time in another little town
All the halls the same
Guess I’ll play the game
From another round

Long hours in a small hotel
With the kind of company you know well
Sit in the bar and write songs ‘til 3am
Same old lines
Just string ‘em together again

Chorus:
Sing all night
Drive all day
At least that’s how it feels
Watch the sunrise
Every day
From behind the driving wheel
Look around in another town
Moon is in the sky
Every town looks
Just the same
At night

Hardware:
Sony 4-track reel to reel tape recorder.
Some mics
Telecaster with palm pedal/ Fender Twin Reverb amp
Rickenbacker 6-string electric/ Fender Twin Reverb amp
Gibson (I think) mandolin
Fender Precision Bass/ Fender Bassman amp
Silver or white drum kit (sorry Warren, can't remember the brand)

Reunion Tour :) &mdash 10/12/06 - 03:45:23 AM
I'm up for a reunion tour, but we might need an attending medic to look after
ourselves I suspect. Maybe a nice reunion song would be the way to go : )
Thanks for the listen Steve.

Inventive southern rock &mdash 10/12/06 - 02:29:02 AM
Wonderful! Such a nice band. Like an unusually inventive southern
American band.

About the bass player: Seems like you took a main responsibility for
supplying the groove and driving the song forwards, a very important
task for the bass. The drummer is lagging just a little, which is not
necessarily wrong because it gives the realxed southern-rock
character.

Such a stable and dependable bass player give a very relaxed situation
for the rest of the band members, where they can joyfully do their
things (even if your guitar players had some difficulties keeping pace).

Thank you for posting Neil! Very inspiring to hear some of your history.
I can understand why this track is a favourite of yours. It is super nice.
Nevertheless it would be very intersting to hear one more track if you
have any...

PS I don't vote, feels kind of unfair to rate history...

Drummer &mdash 10/12/06 - 02:44:08 AM
I like the comment Curry. Warren, the drummer was very good - the best I've
played with but one - I expect the set up was responsible for any apparent
lag.
Thanks for the listen!

Hey, &mdash 10/12/06 - 03:57:38 AM
very cool trip back in time! I thought it had a Southern Rock feel to it.
Thanks for bringing this out of "The Vault" and sharing it. I enjoyed
listening. I'd be curious to know if the other band members are still
playing and if there's any sort of reunion jam session in the works.

Hi Mike &mdash 10/12/06 - 04:39:44 AM
Joe is still writing and is producing some beautiful music -- sometimes with
Peter. Roger has a recording studio in southern Queensland, and plays the
folk circuit with his wife Penny, and Warren is still gigging with bands on the
north coast of New South Wales. There is, I think, a fair bit of interest in
getting together for a song - I'll keep MJ posted.
Cheers,
Neil

A fan in Norway too &mdash 10/12/06 - 04:39:55 AM
That country styled Eagles sound was rather taken care of in my part of the world at that period as well. We had some bands sounding pretty similar to this.

This band is however very good, and the world deserves a reunion:)

Enjoyed it big time. Thanks for putting it out Neil!

One of the bands that came to mind listening to you guys was a band call Flying Norwegians. I found a little taste of them
here: http://www.musicfromnorway.com/default.aspx?norwegian=artist&music=14041
They where mostly active in the beginning of the -70's.

Takes me back, way back . . . damn, we're gettin' old dude.

But, it's incredibly cool to me to hear what were doing way back when.

Almost gives me the guts to post some of my own old Sony reel-to-

Great stuff jig :)

This is SOOOOOO 'Untitled' era Byrds.... &mdash 10/13/06 - 06:23:15 PM
From the Clarence Whitish telecaster stuff to the vocals, and the
amazing thing is, IT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE YOU ON BASS... It's such
jiguma playing...Very throbby, very much carrying the groove of the
song, very even... Did you use a compressor back then? The evenness
of the tone is impressive... And a very nice mix, especially for on-the-
fly to four track... I was hearing some of that off-ness, just a bit, in the
drums and in the rhythm guitar, but it's just a little on the one hand,
and on the other it reminded me of playing with the ELECTRIC version
of Wheatstone Bridge, in a big barn, and this sensation that sound
took perhaps a second more than it should have to cross from the PA
speakers, over the drummer, past Nan's amp, and to my ears... And on
the THIRD hand, you guys get tighter as the song goes along. Hmmm,
just like my old band... And the song goes on a LONG time... nicely...
Gratefully downloaded, along with the picture. I'll eagerly snap up any
further retrospective offerings. I'm both impressed and grateful, Neil.
Keep 'em coming, visit New England on the reunion tour... Great little
hostel right down the road from Fran...

Hey, what's up with the [lack of] Australian accents? You guys have to go
to Country Rocker School?....

[ Reply to This ]
lol!!!!! &mdash 10/13/06 - 09:15:27 PM
Glad you got here Ed! Joe's Aussie accent was removed shortly after birth,
and I've never played with an accent : )
Roger would love that you mentioned Clarence - his hero - the palm pedal
was even called a "Carence White palm pedal" from memory. Roger also
played a mean pedal steel. You can listen to his current music at http://
www.home.gil.com.au/~restlessmusic/index.html
I did use a compressor on one channel of my bass - I used both channels of
the Bassman - a direct signal to the bass channel and a compressed signal
into the treble channel - worked for me.
Now, about the tour: "New England" . . . . is that near Norway?

These guitars &mdash 10/14/06 - 03:40:29 PM
are really very nicely played. I also like the relaxed grooving of the
bass. Decent songwriting, good performance, catchy tune - I see no
reason why this couldn't have been a hit. Fame & fortune in music are
determined by the roll of a dice. I have only one question: where's the
smashing guitar solo?

What a great idea to dig up an old tune like this and post it here. This
shows how powerful music can be, and with just cassette tape, it one day
came live once again. The song is very well played, recorded and
produced as well (I remember the routes of 4-tracks). Thanks for this! /M

Very nice! &mdash 10/18/06 - 07:08:21 PM
It started sounded to me like a resurrected version of a Beatles tune then
it just changed to some really back-land countrified Blues. reminiscent of
a tad Traveling Wilbury's in spots... did I spell that right... doesn't matter
much I guess. Really good stuff Neil... your a monster and thanks for
reaching back. This really kicked my spirits up a notch. A definite
keeper.

And singing - And sweet writing - I probly won't get to know how it is, that some get paid too much money for making this kind of music, and some don't... But I do know, that as much money as I've contributed to the filthy rich, I would have contributed to the makings of "The Rusty Dusty Group" -- had I been around for the asking.

Nice work! Thanks! D
