Fun indeed! &mdash 10/14/06 - 09:32:34 PM
I like it. I particularly like the middle-eastern sound it has. The
subject (fugue theme) grabs your attention right away. As so often is
my comment, I think it'd be nice to hear a longer treatment of this
fugue subject, but nothing wrong with short and sweet either!

Thank you Clark &mdash 10/16/06 - 05:15:21 PM
This is a couple of years old now. Written before I started working in GB. I'm
fond of its energy and the way the base works its way in. As always your
comments are deeply appreciated.

Cute &mdash 10/15/06 - 12:15:10 AM
This was a nice melody, and fugued very well. I think you could play around with the instrumentation to get some different sounds that would also be awesome.

This piece was written before I was working in GB so I'd have to redo it. I have a
great deal of music that I'd like to do that with and hopefully one day will but I
keep wanting to explore new compositions and put off improving old ones but
thanks for the kind comments.

It is short and a lot of my pieces are. I'm working on longer pieces but I also love
a short and effective composition. I'm really happy that you enjoyed this.

about your little fugue (again) &mdash 10/29/06 - 05:58:01 PM
I just wrote you another note, but after reading through some of the other comments, I wanted to add this:
Chopin has sometimes been criticized for only writing fairly short piano pieces. (His piano concerti are the exceptions and he didn't write the orchestrations for them.) So,don't be discouraged by short compositions. They are always delightful because (1) they aren't long enough to get boring; (2) they promise great things without giving away the store.

modern fugue! &mdash 10/19/06 - 12:18:11 AM
I like it but would have enjoyed a slightly longer song with a little more
variation. Well done!

You're right could have lengthened it some. In fact I like the theme enough to
one day to use it as the basis for a longer piece. One day! Thanks again and I'm
enjoying your beatiful work as well.

a little fugue &mdash 10/29/06 - 05:51:23 PM
Bowman: You've got a good idea here--somewhat more of a motif than a full-blown fugal theme, but the start of something that could be really cool. I agree with Clark that the tune gets your attention right off the bat. I'll wager that if you gave this a little more length and development, you'd really have a wonderful little piece. Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us. I enjoyed the experience... (I'm new to macjams.com as of yesterday, so I am still feeling my way. Take a listen to "Freebird" if you get a chance. I missed this one! &mdash 11/13/06 - 02:32:06 PM
This is nicely written, and fun to listen to. If my critique-hat were on, I'd move the little drum from the right to the center and soften it some... if you are going for a renaissance feel (which this has some of), you may want to layer the instruments in more slowly, give the theme more time on the first instrument before letting the others jump in... the melody you have is very nice, and should breathe. I like the way you have little bits of the melody re-appear in different voices and places... this was tantalizingly nice... and too short! You have a great thing here, it is worth extending so we can enjoy it longer! :-) Often times a fugue overlays the first voice with a second voice playing the same melody, but up a fifth (with a note or two tweaked to sound right.) This is the part that scares me away from trying a fugue yet, but if you try it, then maybe I will try it too :-)

I so enjoy your comments because as a fellow composer you see so many directions a piece could go in. I was in an upbeat mood when this happened out of me. Like a lot of my early work it needs to be brought into a sequencer like GB to be tweeked and possibly expanded. One day this will happen. I promise!
Take Care,
Charles/Bowman
