Set the mood
Good mood setting. Really good on the lower strings and the rhythm.
Very enjoyable.

them sound professional. very good!

experiment
all i can suggest is: get jampack 4, experiment with the loops they give you -
but use only the software instruments because they are much more
flexible............

for example, find all the Capitol A loops, and drag each one to its own track.
turn on the cycle region and let it play. now, try the solo button (the little
headphones) on each track one at a time to see how each part contributes to
the whole.........

you can also double click on a violin part to view the track in graphic mode,
open the advanced panel on the left, and switch "notes" to view "expression."
that's where a lot of the magic comes from.........

don't get scared by the dozens of dots in the expression graph, you can
create reasonably nice curves with just a handful of points. if you have an
expression controller on a midi keyboard (i don't), you can record them i
suppose. but i find the fine control using the pencil tool to be very useful for
this stuff........

try changing around the notes, change their pitch and velocity. a lot of the
instruments change dramatically with velocity. experiment! and have fun!

OK
thanks for the suggestion. Are you using loops superimposed on your own
melodies also?

the cat's out of the bag
I rarely do anything the same way twice. In this case, I started with several GB JP4 loops. I changed nearly all the notes, but kept the rhythm and dynamics mostly as is. I think I chopped off some longer loops, and doubled up one or two short ones. I don't recall what order I added and modified the loops, but the final .band file contains modified versions of:

Capitol B French Horns;
Capitol C Orchestral Kit;
Classical Piano Right 100;
Desire A Violas, Cellos, Violins 2;
Escape C Cellos;
and Jazzy Rock Drums 06.

hey Smokey
I read the advice you gave and what a cool idea. there are so many things you can do with GB and I keep learning from people. I am working on a collab and learning from that friend and this idea sounds like it could consume a week or ten. A few months ago what you wrote would have sounded like another language but now i am getting to know my way around GB and what a cool way to come up with a bed to play over.....I'm off to jam
this is another work that i will download and will save for a special playlist
thanx

Set forward
Yeah, this is good Bill. Builds steadily but insistently to the sweet drop off
to the horns 2/3rds the way through. Excellent work. Onward and upward
from here...

Wow!
This is really interesting, very unusual approach for that kind of instrumentation. Especially the second half sounds great with the piano melody contrasting the darker orchestral arrangement. The bass drum is a little strong/bass heavy at times. The theme would lend itself to further exploration. You have a very nice melody and structure here. The piano could be taken over by solo strings and the rhythm could kick in much later. These are obviously just ideas for you to ignore or think about, but overall I think this is a short but sweet piece with a lot of potential! I really enjoyed it.

thx
glad you enjoyed it! re: unusual approach: maybe it's the pentatonic scale i was
using? thanks for noticing that bass drum: it is a bit too much, i need to adjust
that. i like your suggestion of developing the piano's melody with strings; this
thing could grow into a much larger work, with much more work. thanks for the
insightful comments.

small setback
I read the other comments. Yeah. Bass is a bit much on my system... You have such a nice way with the various instruments you use -- the mix seems to always work just about right. But I keep wondering where the music is GOING and I am hoping you will experiment further with melody. The "loved one's pain" certainly comes through with the insistent rhythm. ... I'm happy to have had the opportunity to listen to your work. :)

bass
i'm discovering the danger with some of the JamPack4 instruments: the low-end seems to be very loud, yet my speakers don't reproduce it, so i never suspect there is a problem... it's time to consider getting a sub-woofer i suppose. thanks for listening!

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]
